I'm from Bristol and back in the 80s my friends and I would skip school and go there and spend all day! Mendota va fire tower and a couple of swinging bridges around Clinch Mt was also a destination 🤙 we live in a beautiful area

Technically you're in the Stony Creek area. I lived there for a bit when I first moved up to TN and used to visit these falls regularly. I gave myself a "Smoky Mountain baptism" there in September of 1999 by standing under the falls. Yes, it was very cold, but also very worth the experience 😉

Oh man, that must have been freezing. I'm not much for going into the water myself that's why we usually visit places like this when it's colder out. Plus less people so that is a bonus.

That creek is always cold, even in the middle of August.

But there is no slide. Wish I'd know about that place when I lived there. Now for a slide. Surely you have been to Laurel Falls, in Hampton. If you go there you can scamper up the right side (your left) of the falls to a little trail that takes you above the falls. Follow the trail along the river until you see a 5' river wide water falls. At this point the trail veers off to the left and up hill. It also veers away from the river, for now. Keep following the trail, maybe 100 yards and you come back to the river. On your left you will see a water slide dropping into a small pool of water. Walk out into the middle of the river and up on to the large rock in the middle of the river. Above the rock is a pool of water. On the right side, the water has cut a 90 degree smooth slide thru the rock. I always check the bottom of the slide for sticks or logs, but it is safe to slide. Your girls will love it, so did my lab. Actually she was the first to try it out. When the girls get older, hike up the river from here and you will come to that little bridge you crossed on the AT on the way to the falls. My kids and friends loved this adventure into the "unknown".

That is great information! Yes we have been to Laurel Falls in Hampton and we loved it, in fact it was one of our favorite hikes all year! I will have to go back and check out that hidden gem sometime. Thanks again for the info.

On your visit, check out "Potato Top", after crossing the bridge on the trail from dennis Cove, you will pass thru two 'cut-thru's" that were made to all the train tracks to stay level. As you approach the second cut thru, you can veer off the trail on the left side and walk up the left enbankment. When you get to the tom (also the middle of the cut thru) you will notice a small trail going off to the left. Follow it to the top. Great view of the entire valley. this is the only place I have seen snakes in this area.@@adventuringinthemoment
