How do you keep the squirrels from eating everything before the birds can get to it? I have that problem in my urban backyard.

Feeder pole, placed where no squirrels can jump on it, and a baffle. It works.

Yes you need a pole with a squirrel baffle. And the feeder must be far away from trees that squirrels can jump from.
