Hi P&J! I enjoyed this video a lot. You explained some fine pointers that I missed when making my suet cakes this week. For example, I let mine set in the refrigerator instead of the freezer so some of them didn't come out in that perfect block. But whatever, I put it out there anyway 😂and they ate it all up. Now I will put the next batch in the freezer overnight and see if that helps. I used tiny apple chunks and raisins as my fruit and I did add peanuts as they seem to like the peanut crunch cakes that I normally buy. I haven't used peanut butter and coconut oil yet, but I like how you melted it down and made it less messy than what I've seen others do. I couldn't find actual beef suet anywhere near me, but I did find a store that sold plain beef suet cakes so I bought those to experiment with. There is no LARD to be found anywhere near me though. I'm serious! I even tried a nearby ethnic food store but they didn't have it either. I guess my neighborhood is real bougee or something.😂😆🤣 But I don't eat meat either so what can I say? Anyhoo, my question is, will the coconut oil and and peanut butter be enough to bind the suet cake if it's frozen or do I have to continue my seemingly never ending search for lard or go to the other place and continue to get the plain beef suet?

I left another comment that seems have disappeared. I was asking if peanut butter and coconut oil can be used alone or do you have to use lard? There is no lard to be found anywhere near me. But I did find a place that sells plain beef suet cakes, so I used that in my last recipe. I'm wondering if that can be used with the peanut butter and coconut oil instead of lard?
@PandJsHomesteadAdventure11 ай бұрын
Hi Christallin we didn't see that message, sorry no idea what happened. You can make this without lard, but it doesn't always firm up very well. Even being froze it still tends to fall apart easily. You can use low salt bacon grease. Filter it thru a coffee filter a few times. Less salt or no salt is best for birds. If the plain beef suet cake worked last time, that would be a great option.
