Every time I watch a DCI video, I think that I've just seen the most amazing keyboard play ever. Then I stumble on a video like this one.

Am I missing something or are none of the keyboards using suspended cymbals
@davincai42194 жыл бұрын
SeHyunTheGreat You’re not missing anything, that was one of the big gimmicks of this years show. It was an experimental idea by Mike Jackson and Kevin Shah to see if the effect of cymbals could be substituted with creative writing, sound design, and alternative instrumentation.

Davin Cai elaborate more ?

Dylan Shay having performed under the direction of Mike and marching with Kevin in the past, this is something they’ve always wanted to do. Suspended cymbals are always used to emphasize a climax in shows, followed by the typical boom/crash for large impact. In this show, they eliminated that completely and simply used crash cymbals for large hits. It puts more focus on the brass sections dynamics since they’re not being hidden from crescendos by multiple suspended cymbals. It’s a different sound for sure, but you can hear what I’m talking about. It’s similar to BoA marching bands not fielding drum lines in past years. Creates more of an orchestral type sound apart from the typical hits of modern writing.

I want to do Dci, but how do I go about getting that good? Is there anything specific I can do?
@davincai42194 жыл бұрын
Aaron White The main thing I would say is to just get yourself out there. Go to auditions even if only for the experience; you’ll learn what it takes to be a part of those groups, and great educators will watch you play and tell you what you need to work on. Also if you have high ambitions, don’t be afraid to march lower placing corps first. A summer’s worth of playing at any level does wonders for people.

generally, when you watch drum corps online, you see them at the end of their season when the performers are at the peak of their ability. This isn't representative of the level of talent you'll see at their audition camps. Getting there is a long process, and staff will be more interested in performers who are teachable. Also, like Davin said, don't be afraid to consider more options for your rookie season. Both of us started our drum corps careers at Genesis.

Have solid grasp of the basic stuff. Practice your permutations everywhere you can. Use a met. Repetition is key. What ever it is, rep it til you can't get it wrong. Actually go to an audition camp. Pay attention to every comment even if it's not toward you.

I want to play in a drum core later in life, so i'm just wondering- Does everyone have to use Stevens? I use Burton, but I haven't seen anyone use Burton in a dci. If so, I may as well learn Stevens and just ditch Burton. Also, Great playing! edit: i randomly found this after a year and im now going to be marimba 1 or 2 in high school next year, and i use stevens now lol

Do you have any tips or advice on trying to play faster on mallets?
@davincai42194 жыл бұрын
Johnny Pham Pick a stroke type or exercise to play, and do reps of it gradually bumping tempo until you chop out. Do that regularly, and see if you can track your progress! Also it’s important that you establish good technique first, and that you do not change it as you get faster.
