A fantastic film that had a very fine script with excellent dialog, very well cast, directed and acted. The aerial warfare sequences are amazing, the Best ever shot, bar none. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend adding this to your 'must seem list.

Not sure of the arrangements but in 1965, GP was to use a Lear Jet on a tour to promote the movie. In advance, he spent a week or so at the Wichita factory taking ground school. I was just starting Lear’s sales engineering dept near the training room. One day just after lunch, a small brown paper sack was presented in front of me with the words, “Help yourself.” It was George offering me a 1 cent Dum Dum sucker, an after lunch treat.

Probably the most iconic & inspiring start to an aerial warfare film ever made ... . Ever. 'Knights Of The Air' : although in real life WWI (& that IS reflected in this film), the truth was much harsher & just as brutally tragic for those who flew as those who were in the trenches (salute to ALL wherever). 55 years on & still one of the all-time greats of cinema IMHO.

yes,the pilots life were much harder than the way it is portrayed in the movie,but it was still way better than being in the trenches.

That's kind of what the movie is all about. They SEEM to be "Knights of the Air," above all the gross destruction in the trenches, but the actual fighting was just as brutal and the politics were worse.

I do love the opening. The sound of the aircraft's guns firing is something that has always impressed me. I love the entire film though.

Stachel is an NCO in this scene, I think a Feldwebel. By the time he gets to fly he has made it to lieutenant, although NCOs could be fighter pilots in the WW1 German air force, and indeed in the WW2 Luftwaffe.

Great film, but this German soldier is carrying a British Enfield. It can't be a battlefield pickup either because it is a No.4 rather than an SMLE. Wrong war for a No.4.

Yes you are correct .....also an m1918 helmet would not be issued in 1916 neither.... but I remember being 10 years old and it still remains a visual the rest of my life

The German infantry in the spring 1918 offensive scene also carry them. Obvious substitutes for Mausers which were probably not available.

The trench that Peppard jumps into is actually filled with rats (gross!) but you can only see them in the HD version available to purchase on you-tube. I can't believe they went to the trouble to add that detail.

In WWII quite a number of pilots became infantrymen- Wake Island and the Philippines immediately come to mind.
