Taste... Seems like people are confusing their personal preferences with other things. Regardless of how much you like or dislike this. You really have to respect each of these guys for how hard they've worked. I try and listen to stuff that I don't understand, most recently some death metal. I may not "like" it as much but I can appreciate other aspects of the music. Just because I don't understand it doesn't make it bad music. Anyways...love this.

this is a great video with great musicians. There are idiots who post stupid comments and have no idea what they're talking about. The only reason they're against straight ahead Jazz is because they can't play it well. They stick to fusion and 1/2 chord songs where they can stick with pentatonics only.

I agree with videolover61, these are top level musicians, who choose to sound like high school and collegiate players because it is safe! Monk was not a safe artist nor was his music embodied in safety, hence why he is great along with Trane, Miles, etc. This is why jazz is basically non-existent, the labels and critics are afraid of change and exploration, because it can't be controlled, thus one is using their minds!

@knowpitbull I disagree. I personally prefer straight ahead but can play fusion/latin/free just as well. Straight ahead characterizes jazz though.

All the cats did their homework! That's damn sure! I tried to close my eyes and see if It affected me as much as Thelonius, Woody Shaw, Jackie McClean, Joe Henderson and Elvin Jones,Wes Montgomery. Hell no!
@ezerarias15 жыл бұрын
@CaptainJazz92 Seriously. The only people that complain (that I have encountered) of straight ahead usually can't play it. Mainly because they can't play the changes, etc instead of playing in a freer tune and a tune such as impressions with two chords. Not saying Impressions is an easy tune, but a guy who can't play well won't have a hard time soloing over it instead of ...lets see...Giant Steps.

would expect a more thought provoking arrangement from these guys

I am not a critic pitbull-I am a musician..please do not judge people cause of their name or look. FYI, In jazz, I like everything that swings or groove first, but whatever...this is just a tribute album and all you gotta do is-not buying it. Peace.

I don't get it..what happened to Criss Cross?..Monk would roll over in his grave...and Ravi Coltrane listened so much to Brecker he sounds like...Bennie Wallace!
@epasurr15 жыл бұрын
That is some VERY backwards thinking my friend. What is wrong with straight ahead playing? I listen to all kinds of progressive jazz , stefon harris, christian mcbride, romain collin, and more (and I'm sure many others watching this do as well), BUT there is and always will be room for straight ahead. Just because jazz is constantly moving forward, it doesn't mean we can't take a look back at the past that shaped the music of today. After all, this IS a tribute to Blue Note
@videolover6115 жыл бұрын
Oh ok...just like I cant smell bad breath over the internet...uh, im talking about yours! LOL

I prefer straight-ahead as well, however straight-ahead shouldn't and doesn't imply being less adventurous, they could simply have stretch the boundaries! End the topic there are more important issues in this world, ie economy, healthcare, AIDS, war, etc. - Later!
@tromboneJTS15 жыл бұрын
everyone patting each other on the back...somehow that doesn't seem very modest
@knowpitbull15 жыл бұрын
Also, straight ahead playing doesnt simply mean playing Omni book II-V-I's, I was taught that a musician should re-shape a tune harmonically! In other words if this was analogous to sex, they would be considered plain old missionary! For you cats who don't understand the usage of the safe in this context: Safe - Unwilling to explore!
@Avirothbard15 жыл бұрын
Blame the musicians here!?they are among the heaviest in NYC right now and you should check them out in other situations. This one is just business-recording business. Charlap had to put up a show which was too tough from the get go-and all the cats knows it. There is no musician from Charlap's generation that can replicate the spirit of Mobley, Tina Brooks, Trane, Tyner, Mabern, Green,Joe Hend, Junior Cook etc'-those were other times man! move on and let the cats do their end of the "Deal".

"Heaviest in NYC" - Payton is pretty chubby! People a have a right to their opinion, heck it's the jazz critics along with labels that has handicapped the music. You critics not thinking out the box having names like Bop2thebone. The music is timeless, their interpretation is old!
@videolover6115 жыл бұрын
This stuff is just old. It's been done. Nobody impressed me here. You wanted jazz to be a museum piece well here it is. This don't mean much. Alot of HOT air!!!

Let me tell you something: this music is tired. Period. It has nothing to do with straight ahead jazz, it's about soul! This music is flat. Nobody here is cooking, Nodody here is innovating in their expression. Nobody is on the edge. The music is like warmed over eggs. White bread with no gravy!!! This puts me sleep. This is Monk's song, but not his spirit...
@videolover6115 жыл бұрын
And what with the old grey suits?? Huh? What to play this music you got to look like an undertaker in a funeral home? Ol' Nick Payton looks like Louie Armstrong and he ain't even 40 years old! Remember this: you glorify the past, then the future dries up!!!
@0766577 жыл бұрын
videolover61 sure let's all wear T-shirts and play dubstep in concerts right? That's being true to the time we live in. If you like jazz listen to the guys who today play it, period. We all know Monk, Wes, we have their recordings. But the best players alive are these ones. If you don't like these guys stay at home listening the original monk recording for the 60th time, or go out to some crappy concert where the musicians have to dress weird because their listeners like you care more about the looks than the music. Moron.
