Wow! Learned about some heavy hitters I hadn't yet heard about. Still busy wading into the jazz pool, but starting to get in deep. Blue Spirits and Star Bright for a one two punch!

Very important reminder for us all, thanks Michael. I had sensed a slightly different feeling from you, but I appreciate every record you review, and have a lot of trust in your opinions, so thank you for continuing to share your thoughts with us even when it can get fatiguing. Valuable reminder about how good we have it at the moment, to appreciate it while we can. Great job mate

Good video Michael. Good to remind us how brilliant these series are . For me the Classic Series releases this year have been amazing and the new Dizzy Reece is among the best if not the best. 👍

Totally agree with you Rob - Dizzy Reece is great - I hope “Trinity in Blues” is reissued on Tone Poet some day. Mike I also agree that we will look back on the Tone Poet and Classic series with find memories.

Me personally i think its gone very backwards in quality in terms of Classic titles. I mean Somethin Else, The Sidewinder, Moanin, Midnight Blue, Idle Moments, Doin' Alright etc are far superior to whats come of late but every now and then theres a gem or two from Big John P or Stanley T! The Tone Poets are there to reissue the lesser known titles that didnt make it in the Music Matters catalogue. I do wish the BN Classics were Tone Poet quality. SO MANY RETURNS!!!!

These blue note classic vinyl series are on sale at places in my country. Feels so good to pick up a good pressing of a jazz album for not more than €15.

Here is an idea: Sell BNC Staughton jackets (no vinyl) at 9.99$ / piece. Like spare parts, I am certain this would sell big time.

Could you do a new top list of Blue Note classics and Tone Poets? We're at so many releases now that I'm losing track which are the true classics to get :)

Still unsure about the Chet Baker, as I got „Blue Room“ on RSD. Gil Evans might become my favourite in this round.

I find the sound difference significant between the two Chet titles imho The first one is an absolutely sublime transfer - this is no knock on this second Chet title which is good.

Michael , did you get the Stanley Turrentine “ Mr. Natural” ? I had the Gil Evans in my hand but switched it for the Verve acoustic sounds release of Winston Kelly “Smokin’ at the Blue Note” ! I’ll definitely pick up the Evans next!

Can someone recomend few more albums like Chet Baker sings and sings again, ella and louis sing and so on....i am really into this slow smooth vocal jazz but dont know what to look for...

Honestly, for anyone interested in Freddie Hubbard... I strongly recommend Mosaic's set with all of his '60s Blue Note and Impulse! releases - 10 albums on 7 CDs - hi-res transferred from the master tapes and mastered at 24-bit, for $120 - it's almost ridiculous. With a superb booklet, and I assure you're not going to get better sound than that, no matter AAA or whatever... There's no reason to buy vinyl when there's no reason to buy vinyl, really... Grab it while you can because it's not going to be around much longer, I'm surprised it's not sold out already

Where can we get the Little Johnny C for 24.99€ in germany ?
@itsvladzino3246 Жыл бұрын
BNC jackets: what a missed opportunity to strengthen the Blue Note equity AND make more turnover/profit. Strategy should have been Staughton jackets for both Tone Poet & BNC, keeping gatefold only for Tone Poet (to preserve BNC differentiation with MMJ). Sell both at circa @ 32.99, making it easy to make it irresistible below the 30$ when on sale (but never below 20 as they go on BNC). In all cases, current BNC covers are incoherent with the pressing. Don Was is too nice with John H :)

I agree that the new Chet Baker release is not at the same level as the “Chet Baker Sings” when it comes to the choice of the songs. It will not reduce the demand for the first record at all. I was wondering about your opinion on the Stanley Turrentine title Mr. Natural. In my view it is one of the highlights of Tone Poet this year (the music, the songs, the sound and the beautiful cover).
@itsvladzino3246 Жыл бұрын

The profile of white jazz players is way more prominent today in peoples tastes than it actually was in the day of jazz. White jazz artists are receiving far more promotion and reissue compared to merit or musical status during the era. Turns my stomach to see great miles Coltrane shorter Mingus promoted less than any drugged out bill Evans crap mail it in reissue from the 70s. Or Chet baker about to fall down….. How bout that GREAT???? Art Pepper…LOL Whatever. Maybe we need another video of an 80s pop gal review of the 1000. Bill Evans box… It wasn’t you..I know…stick with the blue note, they’re not pushing the revisionist story
@Licoricedisc Жыл бұрын
Pretty sad to see Bigoted people who look at music/life with a Racists mind... Revisionist story? You are the one being the Revisionist.... Miles, Shorter, Coltrane ALL were Heroin Addicts at some point in their lives, as were a large part of the Jazz musicians then... regardless of whether they were Black or White. Again, really sad to see posts by those like yourself who divide everything in life by .... race... sad little people.
