It looks awesome as a 57 Vet and paint color is neat. I'm starting to like purple more lately... Lol As for the paint issue, I'm leaning to the lacquer top coat being the issue as it was the last thing but I have done the same thing with no issue. Sometimes it's just brand names not playing together. Still looks cool... Hay, call it the Crackle Look, make it a feature... 😃 LLAP 🖖

Hi Larry sounds like the flash of time between coats is the problem the only way to fix it is a strip down and repaint allow plenty of time between coats before you move to the next especially you clear coats but do love the color looks awesome another reason dont mix you paint brands 👍👍

Oh man Larry! Bummer bout the paint! It could probably be helped with some work. I think the cracking is a mix of lacquer over enamel and/or acrylic being too thick. Great looking build outside of the paint anomaly. Can you see primer in the cracks or is it just the clear layer? If it's just the clear layer you could do some wet sanding and then do the brush on floor gloss which would fill some and even it out some. Either way cool looking build!
@LarrysModelShop Жыл бұрын
It goes into the black base coat, but not primer. I tried the Quick Shine, but to no affect on the cracks. It's cool, I'm learning. I considered the lacquer may have been too think, but it was two light coats. Oh well, on to the next!

Thank you for your awesome insight Michael. Much appreciated. I am choking this up as a great learning moment for me and hopefully someone else will learn something from it. On a different note, I do hope your wife is doing better. Please take care and know that I'm thinking of you both.

If you hadn't said anything about the paint issue, I would have thought that it was just a cool design that you'd incorporated into the paint. It's still a nice build. I have to admit that I'm frustrated with Testors dropping the Pink Champagne color shift paint. They have a tendency to bring out wonderful colors, and just as we get hooked on them, they drop them. I've heard that we can still get it in the porch furniture sprays, but I haven't verified that yet. You did good, my friend.
@LarrysModelShop Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for those awesome comments. I found this can at Hobby Lobby for $2.99 so I figured I'd give it a try, they also had a green color shift paint for the same price, so I bought that one too. I'm getting away from the lacquer and enamel paints and going to be strictly working with Acrylics. That way I can spray all year long in the house.

Well it does look great, that is a sweet color shift coat. And im diggin that interior with the tan inserts. Ahh the dreaded enamel vs lacquer concoction...its aways a gamble. Lacquers dont play nice when you use them over any other types of paints. But you can use other types over top. Provided it has fully cured, im talking no smell, full week at least. What your seeing is two types of paint drying at different rates. This is the result.

Thank you! That's the information I was looking for and it's how I learn and progress in this hobby. Back when I stopped building some 25 years ago, there were no acrylic lacquer paints, so as things have progressed, I've not been up to date on things. On to the next.

Nice looking build! Bummer about the paint though. I assume the Testors paint is one of their enamels. If it's an enamel, what you're seeing is a chemical reaction of the lacquer clear over the enamel which likely wasn't fully cured. I generally don't paint lacquer clear over enamel. But if i did, i wouldn't go near it for at least a month to ensure the enamel is completely cured and it "shouldn't" have any reactions with the lacquer. Hope this helps!

Thanks Manny. Actually, these were Testors rattle cans. I think they are the enamel paints as they don't say Extreme Lacquer on the cans. Thanks for the info! That is what I was thinking, but I felt I gave them enough time between coats. Oh well, that's how we learn.

Yeah I discovered it's not a matter of drying time but rather lacquer over enamel occasionally, ie (chemically)hot lacquers, react badly with enamels.There are lots of builders on the Tube who know far more than I do about it, it'd be worth your time to investigate it more.
