This is a standout track from their debut record. Although live versions of this song feature some killer extended guitar solos. this soft and somber version holds a special place in my heart for (can you believe?) 50 years now.

Albert Bouchard is one of the most underrated drummers of that time period. Albert was heavily influenced by jazz drummers like Gene Krupa. Last Days of May is a staple of Blue Oyster Cult's live sets. Later versions of it turn into guitar showcases where Richie and Buck trade long solos that get real intense. The song is based on a true story that happened to three friends of Buck Dharma's. The shootings took place near Tucson, AZ around 1970-71. One of the friends survived and was able to identify the perpetrators.

Buck's father played in a Blues/Jazz band at weekends so that's part of his background that shows up in BOC's songs. So diverse as a band overall. The mixing on the early albums does often hide the bass & keyboards. Sandy wanted the vocals & lead guitar high in the mix.

This is the only BOC album I ever owned - and it was on 8-track LOL! Loved it, but for some reason never pursued later music by this band. Don't know why, perhaps we just had too many great bands around at that time and BOC got lost in the shuffle. Also, my personal taste always ran more towards blues/rock BOC is some times a bit too prog for me. THIS was a beautiful tune and I loved it. Since you brought it up...I am so glad to see you back on your own reacting in your thoughtful, intelligent way to the MUSIC. I discovered you in 2020 and immediately became a subscriber and tried to watch you every night. I thought you stood out from the others because of your musical knowledge and your insightful comments. I loved the way you were willing to check out the less commercially successful, yet amazingly talented performers out there and to check our the deep cut album tracts, which is often where the gems are. Your new format with Dee, who is lovely and you two are great together, is much lighter and goofy, which is fine, and many people prefer that, but some of us miss your old intellectual reactions. Perhaps you can do some more of these in the future? Please do not think this is criticism, just an opinion. I have very warm feeling for you, Dee and your family and wish only the best for you. XOXO

let me join the chorus by saying the Live version kills. my first BOC album was On Your Feet or On Your Knees. live from 75. all their older songs i know primarily from this great 70s double live album. i didnt get the first 3 albums untill later on CD. the live versions will always be my faves. and they STILL play this song live. currently. and always. on tour. so worth seeing them live.

This song is great live, with an excellent guitar solo usually thrown in. It is inspired by a true story of three students from Stony Brook University (Long Island) who traveled south for a drug deal and were shot.

The song is based on a true story, about 3 college kids from NY doing a drug deal on the mexican border in Arizona. They joined up with 2 other guys at a motel who planned to rob and kill them. The 3 guys were in the backseat, while the other 2 guys were in the front. They drove out to the desert off the highway and shot the kids in the backseat, one of the kids jumped from the moving car after getting shot in the face, he managed to survive and run for help. The other 2 guys died.

You mentioned you wished the keyboards might have been a bit more in the foreground - the thing to bear in mind is that this track - in fact, the whole LP - was recorded in an 8-track jingles studio, and it's remarkable in that context that the record is as well-balanced as it is...

"Then Came The Last Days Of May" Parched land no desert sand, sun was just a dot And a little bit of water goes a long way, 'cause it's hot (it's hot) Three good buddies were laughing and smoking in the back Of a rented Ford They couldn't know they weren't going far Each one with the money in his pocket Could go out and buy himself a brand new car But they all held the money they had Money they hoped would take them very far The sky was bright, a traffic light, now and then a truck And they hadn't seen a cop around all day (what luck) They brought everything they needed Bags and scales to weigh the stuff The driver said the border's just over the bluff It wasn't until the car suddenly stopped In the middle of a cold and barren plain And the other guy turned and spilled Three boys blood, did they know a trap had been laid? They're ok, the last days of may, I'll be breathing dry air I'm leaving soon, the others are already there (all there) You wouldn't be interested in coming along, instead of staying here They say the west is nice this time of year, that's what they say

My kinda song... this always reminded me of the way Zeppelin would play a blues..or write a blues. Not comparing bands, although I really enjoy BOTH, just the format of this tune reminds me of the Led Zep; LIGHT TO THE THUNDER, as Jimy would say.

I really enjoyed this song, Chod, and you have reacted to a bunch of great BOC songs, but only one from their big, hit album Agents of Fortune, and it was their biggest hit song. You should react to more songs from that album, like "Tenderloin" " This Ain't the Summer of Love" "Tattoo Vampire" or "Morning Final." All great songs by a great group that deserves to be in the HoF.
