FILM DESCRIPTION:
What if virtual reality wasn't just for fun, but was being used to imprison you? That's the dilemma that faces mild-mannered computer jockey Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) in The Matrix. It's the year 1999, and Anderson (hacker alias: Neo) works in a cubicle, manning a computer and doing a little hacking on the side. It's through this latter activity that Thomas makes the acquaintance of Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), who has some interesting news for Mr. Anderson -- none of what's going on around him is real. The year is actually closer to 2199, and it seems Thomas, like most people, is a victim of The Matrix, a massive artificial intelligence system that has tapped into people's minds and created the illusion of a real world, while using their brains and bodies for energy, tossing them away like spent batteries when they're through. Morpheus, however, is convinced Neo is "The One" who can crack open The Matrix and bring his people to both physical and psychological freedom. A phenomenal scene. This movie is a masterpiece, there is no other word for it. The dichotomy of choice, the illusion of freedom, and the will to embrace truth or hide from it. Those can be applied to so many areas/issues of our "civilized" lives. The Matrix will forever be my favorite science-fiction movie. :) For my part, I choose the red pill.

I actually like to compare this movie to lucid dreaming - that is, awareness of the dreamstate during a dream. This movie actually took a lot of inspiration from that, since the Wachowski Brothers are lucid dreamers themselves. I would say that the Jump Program is the closest that this movie comes to a real lucid dream, because that's exactly what it tends to be like for people who deliberately try to fly for the very first time in their dreams - they find a high place, then jump, then unwillingly expect gravity and start to fall.

Funny, I saw no symbolism in that scene at all. When I first watched it, and even the next few times. All I saw in that scene was that pill was for locating him. Morpheus explained it right there (actually in the next scene, but whatever). What symbolism was supposed to be conveyed? I hardly notice things like that. Face value of what's portrayed, is typically what I gather most. Was the symbolism, Choice? I was under the assumption that he simply wanted to make sure Neo was willingly going along, and not forced. Not much to read into.
