Good lookin' fishies there! Judging by the way y'all are dressed for cooler weather I was wondering whether this was on, or near, the DH portion of the Toccoa. Those are mighty big trout for public waters unless it's near the DH section where DNR stocks some really nice trout from Nov to May.

Walk through the woods with your rod tip/s behind you and you’ll love life a bit more as you try to get through brush. You will hang up in brush less and really reduce the chances of breaking a tip. Nice video and catch! I just commented to my dad it would be fun to bring the drift boat down that way on the mainstream as well as hitting some of those tribs.

I've fished so much public water in Georgia and never have I caught anything wild over 16 inches. Litteraly have been in the north Georgia Mountains atleast twice a month over the last 2 years. Fished the easy spots and fished tons of spots where you hike over a mountain with no trail and push through the thickest rhododendron. These are some incredible fish. Never tell anyone the spot. I certainly haven't found it yet so keep it secret.

With a guide service is the only way I have caught large rainbows- 20 to 30 inches. Learned a lot as well.
@markhaven5638
@markhaven5638 2 жыл бұрын
That's because wild rainbows never exceed 15 inches in Georgia, And 15 would be a once in a lifetime fish for a wild rainbow. Wild browns are a different story.
@philliphutcheson4219
@philliphutcheson4219 Жыл бұрын
Nah this is super easy to figure out. These are fish that swam up from private waters to spawn in the public section of streams ABOVE the private waters. They have kamloops genetics in there as a local private hatchery in suches that has been stocking the private streams here for 40+yrs. That’s a long time to help get those genetics established and doing their natural spawning run. Either way, couldn’t tell you if those are wild or stocked fish as NOBODY does genetic testing to verify that sadly.
@philliphutcheson4219
@philliphutcheson4219 Жыл бұрын
@@markhaven5638yep, you get it. It takes a lot of work to catch a 20+in brown here in Georgia. Doesn’t matter if it’s a tailwater fish or a freestone stream.
@markhaven5638
@markhaven5638 Жыл бұрын
@@philliphutcheson4219 two streams come to mind. One tailwater and one freestone. I've never been close in GA but I make an annual trip to the Smokies and I usually catch a 15inch plus brown up there and more often than not it's on a dry fly. And that's a trophy for me.
@philliphutcheson4219
@philliphutcheson4219 3 жыл бұрын
Nice job fellas This is one of those places in Georgia you have public waters above private waters which allows for big fish to swim up when they want.
@kcoutfittersblueridge4510
@kcoutfittersblueridge4510 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks bud. That’s not exactly right though I’ve caught a several big fish up there that have never seen a day on private in there life. Being above private water isn’t what allows them to get big, but the one fish a day 16 inches or bigger, artificially only, single barbed hook only regulations in a literally perfect trout habitat with an abundance and huge variety of natural food allows that. You do get the fish that migrate up from private occasionally which is cool to, but to imply that as being the main reason for big fish, I would have to respectfully disagree.
@philliphutcheson4219
@philliphutcheson4219 3 жыл бұрын
@@kcoutfittersblueridge4510 we do not have the geology or food chain that supports those fish getting that big naturally in any trout stream in Georgia. Our Granitic/mica schist based bedrock is too high in silica & very very low in cal/mag which is what you need for bugs. The regs help on that section but the food chain simply doesn’t exist the way it should. This is also the time of year the DNR has found that most rainbows run upstream for spawning in Georgia. And migrating long distances is not unusual for them either so it’s entirely possible those fish swam upstream. Either way it’s still a cool to see bigger holdover fish on a public section here.
@kcoutfittersblueridge4510
@kcoutfittersblueridge4510 3 жыл бұрын
@@philliphutcheson4219 I hear you but if you read my comment I said I’ve caught several big fish up there that were big. I never said they were that big or wasn’t implying that those weren’t fish that moved up. Just saying that I felt like your original statement took away from some of the really solid natural fish it produces that are maybe not this big, but definitely a lot better size than most creeks in N GA that don’t have trophy regulations.
@philliphutcheson4219
@philliphutcheson4219 3 жыл бұрын
@@kcoutfittersblueridge4510 I completely understand what you are saying and I agree to a point. Can those particular streams produce larger than average fish? Yes, but there are very special circumstances surrounding those five streams where this occurs. In this particular streams case there is no way to know if those fish were stocked, swam up from private waters or were streamborn. The only data we do have though from DNR is that natural stream reproduction does happen but it comes with an extremely low survival rate due to poor food chains in the streams and heavy competition from other fish. How good is the bug population for example. What is the fish concentration per mile. What is the bedrock source. I have been doing a ton of research on the area regarding geology and found some cool stuff we should chat bout on IG. Definitely could help eliminate some walking to some of the stream sections.

But this is where I was born and raised grew up 5 minutes from this creek and all those old houses on the way in are all homes my family built and lived in. I just know what I’ve seen up there first hand, but I don’t doubt you have some good information and it’s cool you looked into. For now I believe I will just digress and keep trying to create stuff that I think is cool haha.

@kcoutfittersblueridge4510

up there its so dense with cover and they are high up where the water doesnt really have much time to warm up from the time that it comes out of the ground to the point where it sunlight actually penetrates through for substantial amounts of time. A hot dry summer though you. will still see high 60's possibly low 70's and at that point we just leave the fish a lone.

Usually in the fall/winter we like to run pretty small nymphs like 18-20 pheasant tails for blue wing imitations or midge patterns in the same size range. Your tippet size will be equally as important i would stay in the 5x-6x range and longer leaders. 10-12 stonefly would be a good option as well.
