Firstly I remind people that the pavilion grounds Maomao used to grow the flowers is in the rear palace and true "men" are not permitted there, those blokes were all eunuchs. And well, I'm afraid I must rain on Alicia's parade, but "Blue" roses do in fact exist... As of either 2002 or 2004. But it is the meaning that make our monocle wearing fox of a strategist's recollection somewhat sad. I can't explain why the palace would have looked that way to him then, as that would be entering spoiler territory, but keep in mind: In Chinese folklore, blue roses represent achieving unattainable love. This symbolism comes from a Chinese folktale about an emperor trying to find a husband for his daughter. He declares that suitors must present a blue rose to the princess to be worthy of her hand, but because blue roses don’t occur naturally, many fail this task. Finally, a penniless suitor unexpectedly succeeds, and the princess accepts his offer. For those curious: blue roses previously couldn't exist because the flower lacked delphinidin, the blue pigment found in true blue flowers. However a Japanese scientist managed to successfully create such a flower via genetic modification, so in some senses of the word the blue rose now means "Overcoming the impossible". Apothecary diaries uses all sorts of flower language, such as a previous episode showing Maomao being supported by her "Sisters" in the brothel through a bouquet, so those with proper knowledge of the "language of flowers" as it is sometimes referred to, will receive a greater understanding of the emotional situation from the anime. (This is not done in the LN I'm afraid so it took me till now to make the connection behind Lakan's request). I will note that looking at pictures of the "blue" rose online, despite the acclaim and the flower now containing delphinidin, the actual flower is a lilac hue.

I don't see anyone mention it, so I will. It is not a spoiler, just a bit of info not carried from writing to anime. (Note: it's 2nd hand, may be even 3rd hand knowledge, I haven't read it myself). Just like for the roses knowledge, the emperor was curious about Maomao "teaching" (ep.14). Maomao gave access to her "teaching material" to the emperor. When she gave the book, it mean out of all the document about technique, play, tease, foreplay, postplay/aftercare, etc... this specific book contain the emperor favorite.

Yeah, it's more like a "Book of his favorites" instead of "His favorite book". Maybe the translation would have been "His favorites book", and they missed that nuance. Which, once you understand what that means, is quite valuable for a person competing to please the Emperor. You wouldn't have to waste time trying to figure out what works and what doesn't, and instead have a head start over the others. Definitely gave her something good in return for using the steam room.

Feel my heart clench whenever Maomao meets with Lihua, in the good way. Always puts me in mind of episode 4, and you can just see the deep affection she has for Maomao after everything she did for her (not including being her current porn supplier, apparently). I'm glad that Gyoku's got another kid on the way, but I was really hoping Lihua would've gotten pregnant again too, since she really seemed to want that. Wish they'd tell us if she could.

All things considered, the emperor is a fairly alright dude. He's still the emperor and can still have someone beheaded at a word, but he seems like he has very healthy ways of engaging both with his concubines and with the servants under them. As long as people offer him appropriate respect, it looks like he is a very agreeable person.

Xiaolan is a wonderful character (and person) who is not seduced by Jinshi. She would be a great person to add to Gyokuyou and/or Suiren.

She’s not really a lady-in-waiting sort. No family connections, and she doesn’t have the expertise Maomao did that got her the food-tasting job. (Plus Gyokuyou is cautious enough that “friend of Maomao’s” might not be enough for her.) And she seems pretty satisfied with her position as a laundry girl - give her snacks and time to gossip with friends, and she’s happy.

Quality Lingli AND Xiaolan content in this episode, so that’s our quota of cuties satisfied. No surprise that our simple, hardworking country girl is perfectly comfortable with caterpillars. It’s striking that Maomao talks about how time flies at the Jade Pavilion; when she first started working there, she was complaining about how bored she was with nothing to do but check meals two or three times a day. Guess babysitting duty is more fun. (Man, though, if she doesn’t take it easy, that wound will NEVER heal properly.) If you pay close attention when Lakan’s meeting with Jinshi, you can see that he puts the monocle on his other eye after cleaning it. That definitely says SOMETHING about him. The dowager empress is very briefly voiced for the first time! They cast Mamiko Noto, who’s had leading roles for about 20 years now; if you look her up on MAL and sort by favorites, you’ll probably find some roles you know. She was the first seiyu whose voice I learned to recognize.

Well not so sure Maomao’s recommendation won’t carry a Lott of weight. Hongniang is pretty shrewd judge of character and skills as well as Suiren. I think a maid to help off load work, especially with two babies in Jade Palace. Xiaolan is pretty flexible the money would be important her biggest shortcoming is reading and writing. However, she is a pretty motivated girl and could pick it up fast. Perhaps I am projecting too much into story since I am very fond of her.

Important point Jinshi showing up Loulan and her powerful father, Shishou. This maybe one of the most important scenes foreshadowing Season 2. Season 1 is really about Maomao and her history, character, and motivations. Season 2 will finally begin understanding the Empire and its history/politics. Praying for Season 2.

I said it before but the writing is good and annoying (bc we fall for it) bc it's made to show us how Maomao misleading information and dramatic reactions make us reach a conclusion before knowing all the facts, just has Maomao adoptive father told her "don't make assumption based on speculation"; So her reaction so far are normal But the next episode and the next after she's either gonna switch and apologies OR stick to her 1st impression and turn the script around to justify why she ain't changing her mind bc she's pity like that( she admit herself that she's like that)
