THANK YOU for this video, saved me from buying another vehicle. I had the same problem and my mechanic said it needed new valve guides. I did a little research and found this video and replaced the valve cover with the PCV built in. NO MORE SMOKE ON START-UP, it immediately stopped and it has been 2 weeks since replacement. Easy job as well.

That was my mechanic's assessment as well (valve seals). It's the correct assessment in most cases, but not in this case. It's nice when customers can show their mechanic a thing or two, it can be helpful down the road when the next vehicle comes in with the same symptoms ;)

Thank you very much for posting this symptom on video. It's the first I've found on you tube actually showing it happen at cold start up and I'll bet you have just saved me from spending $2000 on having valve seals replaced on a DOHC Mazda 3.0 engine when it probably only needs a new $12 pcv valve.

@@DJJAZZYREAVES so the valve cover replacement didn’t work for you? My mechanic says he thinks piston rings are bad and wants to replace the engine. I’m tempted to try this first but don’t wanna waste money

My god I can't thank you enough for taking time to make this video. I have a beautiful Saab 97x. I live in a large apartment complex, I leave my house at 630am which is a common time for others to be walking their dogs. When I start my car it looks like it's on fire!!' Smokes like a dam freight train!!! I'll be ordering some covers, thanks!!!!

i have this exact same problem with my 07 gmc yukon xl. I'm so glad is not a piston ring like i originally thought. I just had $4k put into the motor to disable the DoD, new lifters, camshaft and custom tune. Great video, Thanks!

Since this video, I've put about 7k on the truck. Oil consumption has been reduced by about 65%. This tells me that IN MY CASE, the original pcv was the cause for the majority of oil consumption

Hello, can you tell me how much oil is your vehicle burning now. I have a 2002 Suburban and every 700 miles it burns 1qt of oil. Thinking about replacing the crankcase valve cover with the Dorman updated replacement and wondering if a reduction in oil consumption will be really noticable and worth the price of the cover

Will this also make the vehicle seem like it’s jerking while shifting out of 1st?

My LS1 does this but only after its warmed up and shut off for about 10 minutes. Then when you restart it a big cloud of blue smoke. But I don't notice anything on cold start after sitting for days like yours. Any ideas?

Anybody have a part number for the updated valve covers?

does it still burning or sucking oil after the valve cover replacement?
@91928gt5 жыл бұрын
After the valve cover replacement, and 7k miles driven, it is still consuming oil - but the consumption is now consistent with a 5.3 with 257k miles, so tolerable in my book. I've measured it and the consumption now is about 1/3 the rate as before the cover change. The smoke at startup hasn't returned.

What does replacing valve covers help? Just trying to understand why this fixes issue. Thanks in advance.
@91928gt4 жыл бұрын
The PCV valve is integral to the d.s. valve cover. The replacement cover has a redesigned PCV port that apparently eliminates the oiling issue.

Did it still smoke a little bit after the replacement for awhile until all of the oil got burnt through that was already in the intake?
@91928gt5 жыл бұрын
To my surprise, after installing the cover, the billows of smoke at startup completely stopped after driving a few miles. Oil consumption is far less than before the cover install. I'm at 263k now.
