Ahhhh this is a special song. Bittersweet for me. My late husband loved it so much, especially the chanting, that the night before he died suddenly, he explained his love for it & asked me to play it at his funeral! As if he knew!! So as he slipped behind the curtain of the crematorium, & everyone was very sad & sombre, all you could hear was "Ooga chaka , Ooga chaka" & there was laughter & dancing & a bit of bewilderment in the seats. He would love to have left us laughing.

When I first started watching this channel, I wasn’t sure about Brad. He seemed grumpy and maybe not nice to Lex, kind of dismissive. Then I realized he wasn’t really that way at all 😂, and Lex has gotten freer with her reactions and silliness. They crack me up! 😂😂

This song was recorded several times before Swedish band Blue Swede recorded their verson and this is like the version! It reached #1 at Billboard the same day another group from Sweden called ABBA got their international break through when winning the Eurovison Song Contest. Lead singer Björn Skifs was on tour somewhere in Sweden when his manager or record company reached him and asked why he wasn't in America by now! This was in 1974 and no previously Swedish song had been at the top of Billboard so everyone was caught completely off guard! Years later Björn admitted that the manager or guy from the record company was right he should have been in America but again no one was prepared for the success.

It's a cover though, and was covered by many. Original is from 1968, written by Mark James and performed by B. J. Thomas. Blue Swede's version came 6 years later, in 1974

BJ Thomas had this original hit, doing it "straight" and pretty. This version's opening is very famous and instantly recognizable. Now that you have heard it, I bet you'll never forget it. And Lex's laughter brings a lot of joy!

By then most people had already forgotten about this song! When this song reached #1 at Billboard no one in Sweden was prepared for it so everyone was busy with other things in Sweden. When they finally came to America the hype was basically over.

This track was part of a compilation album called "Knockout" which was distributed by a company owned by an aunt and uncle called TeeVee Records. "Saturday Night" by The Bay City Rollers was also on this album.

The original was one of B.J. Thomas' most well known hits. You should check it out, also "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" (from the film "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" with Paul Newman & Robert Redford), and "The Eyes of a New York Woman"...it's my favorite song by him. Oh no, they don't need to waste their time on raindrops keep falling on your head FFS It's probably the blandest and most mediocre song of all time. I'm always one to say personal choice is important and each to their own etc but I draw the line at "raindrops". It's fucking terrible and anyone suggesting it wants slapping with a cod, then a haddock, then a newspaper, and so on in that fashion until we either run out of gerbils or they take back their request!

I wouldn´t quite call it a one hit wounder. Its just that Björn just realized this song under the name blue Swede. He did have several hits with his normal name. He also did one song for the musical chess. He just wasn´t very popular in the US... really at this time, there was very little musical trade between Europe and US. This really started to ease up mostly during the 80-tys. Prior to the 90-tys there had only ever been 3 Swedish hits in USA... Only for the first few years of the 90-tys Ace of base had 4 hits them self as a contrast. Interesting is that Abba that is now days generally considered a fairly large band, ever just had one hit in the US

Love this song. When I was young I wanted this song but I had no idea what it was called or where to get it. One day I was down by the lake at a bar and this came on the Juke Box. I talke to the owner who agreed to let me come the next day, take the 45 out of the juke box. Go home and tape it. then bring it back. I was so happy. And for you young folk out there, a 45 is a small record with one song on each side.
