You need to be in a Scottish pub or club when that song comes on. EVERYBODY knows the words and knows it is their duty to belt it out at the top of their lungs! Brings a smile to my face every time I hear it. I would say it goes beyond being a romantic anthem and is actually a devotional anthem.

I was raised on the rez for the first 14 years of my life and while I've visited Scotland, my genetics are mostly Native American. You wouldn't know it when this song comes on though, lol. Lol I'm that way with British stuff. Dad's female ancestor was Cherokee but who she married was partial English. I once stood on the train platform in DC and a tall and upright older man with high cheeks walked up and asked if I were from Oklahoma. He said I looked like family. He had on a hat with commemoration pins that tell me he was a tourist. Yes he was visiting from OK. I almost cried I've never felt a genuine connection with Cherokee from outside of me before. Usually it's English or my moms Mexican side. I don't doubt he really was family.

We play this in my cover band. Goes over well everywhere. Brad, that loud and quiet thing is called dynamics. It is done on purpose to impart emotion and feeling into the song, and also to back off so that something else (like vocals) can stand out more. You notice it more in songs like this because it leaves gaps. In other songs, it allows you to start more chill and then build intensity.

As someone else has pointed out, there actually is a volume issue with this lyric video that isn't in the original. But that's kind of the problem with lyric videos, honestly. The people who make them are (for the most part) lazy and put in the least amount of effort possible to get clicks on their channel. I generally hate when people react to lyric videos because 95% of the time the lyrics are wrong, misspelled, and/or incomplete or cut off. Do the people who make the lyric videos do any checking to see if the lyrics are legit? Nope. Do they fix typos or errors or lyrics that got cut off? Nope. Check to see if the song cuts off abruptly 40 seconds before it's supposed to end? No way. And sound problems? Hell no. Just copy, paste, and upload without ever looking at their own video again. It sucks.

They are a one-hit wonder from an American perspective. It's the only song of theirs that charted here, and that didn't even happen until 1993 despite the song originally being from 1987. Whenever we talk of one-hit wonders, we mean here in the US. We don't pay attention to foreign charts. Of course even then people have different ideas of what exactly constitutes a "hit" song. Billboard Top 100? Top 40? Top 10? Did it have to peak at #1 (if so this song wasn't a hit either, as it peaked at #3)? I think most of us just go "I heard it on the radio a lot and it seems like pretty much everyone knows the song, therefore it was a hit", without much regard for the actual chart positions anyway, haha.

Do you go on Japanese channels and complain that they aren't speaking English or that their perspective is too Japan-centric as well? Not everyone wants to be some kind of global citizen... most people actually are attached to their culture and have little interest in what the rest of the world gets up to as long as it isn't threatening their way of life. Brad, the soft and loud in a song is called "dynamics" - the music gets louder (crescendos) and softer (decrescendos) at times for effect. This is a fun little song that everybody can sing along with and enjoy. This song was also a running joke in the show "How I Met Your Mother" - a tape of it got stuck in Marshall's Fiero and it was the only song that ever played when they were in that car. It crops up in several episodes.

I don't think he meant that, and maybe you didn't notice, but there were very short moments of volume-peaks that i never heard in this song before. The video they watched must have some faulty audio.

One of the goofiest songs ever to become a hit . It's nerve racking. God, my friends, brothers and I hated it! radio and MTV would play this . Its alt rock mixed with folk rock. Admittingly it became catchy in later years, as you would hear it on movies, commercials. lol. Then my daughter liked this song when she was a baby. Uugghh!!! lol

1993 down at Penns Landing in Philly for one of the summer's series of free concerts and the Proclaimers are scheduled to play. But this song gets huge for them, and they get the opportunity to play a paying gig in a real venue. So what did they do? They showed up and played this song and a couple others and then off they went!! Credit to them for making the effort for those of us too broke to pay for tickets.
