Finally got around to watching this film and it's beautifully made as it is devastating. I really dig your analysis! As for choosing sides, looks like most people sympathize with Dean. Makes sense. Dean is a much simpler character and easier to love. And audiences are uncomfortable with difficult women in most narratives, but especially romantic/relationship driven ones. That is a huge reason why this movie is so fascinating and why I find Cindy so compelling. Her story is sadder to me because it seems that she hasn't found personal happiness. And I believe that is a big reason why their relationship can't sustain itself. Clearly she was unhappy with her home life and wanted out by becoming a doctor. However she decided to take a different path and hoped it led to the same (happy) ending. But it didn't. I think a lot of the resentment towards Dean is based on the fact that he found his purpose/happiness through her, but Cindy did not. But she wanted to. Sad film, but so so well done.

True but cindy's character was more rigid... like there was no room for working things out ... a bit stubborn imo cuz he seemed like a great dad minus the slouchiness and not helping with chores... cindy was bad at communicating her feelings to her husband and validated those feelings with her coworkers... which in most cases paints her as faultless Dean was more willing to try... atleast when he realized that she wasn't happy ... he wanted kids which triggered her cuz they started this whole relationship because of that... Main problem here to me it seemed that she thought she could do better and deserved better... to her it probably felt like dean (a loser) took advantage of her at a low point in her life and now is coasting through life easy He was there for her despite being beaten to a pulp by her crazy x ... there was really no reason for him to stay ... other than wanting to be loyal and present for a woman he loved Also out of context, their conversation in the car about the ex that is the biological father of the daughter he is raising and also the wierdo who beat him up... the over reaction he had was valid... he must have been scared of losing his family and being beat up again Honestly feel really bad for dean because he thought all his efforts would be enough to be loved by someone... he learnt the hard way that ppl do what they want and once they move on it's over... i do think that is one reason y they aged dean up so much more than cindy... cuz he was in a bit of a toxic relationship with a partner that was slowly becoming resentful and repulsed by him They didn't understand each other and maybe a good therapy session wud have helped if Cindy thought it was worth working out

I sided with Dean as soon as I found out *spoiler alert* that he wasn't Frankie's father, and he knew he wasn't the father. Even after finding out she didn't get the abortion and was still supportive even after getting his ass kicked by the guy who was the father. He was still fighting for her love and his family till the very end.

Why do we have to side with one and go against the other? Yes, he stayed with her even if he was not the father, but is that an excuse for being alcoholic and abusive towards his wife? Both of the chatacters made mistakes, that's why I love this film... it's real. The end of their relationship is not the fault of only one of the partners. It's a bunch of factors from each of them, their families, their struggles and past experiences.

He knew in advance that he wasn’t the father of the baby and he married her anyway-there’s no nobility in that in spite of what you think. He’s an abusive drunk while she’s someone who’s needy for love and is attracted to the worst kind of men. He didn’t stay with her because he loved her he stayed because he knew deep down she’s better than he’d be likely to get if she wasn’t in a vulnerable situation. The ending suggests that she’s more likely to repeat the same mistake but if she had the sense to leave him maybe she’ll be able to get back onto a better track.

I don't understand how such an in-depth analysis doesn't have as many views! And far better than any university lecture! This is the first of your work I've seen. I found Blue Valentine to be such a profound film, it's rawness to a reality that is normally shunned or at least heavily criticised can make it an unnerving experience. I was captivated by a lot of the subtleties that I had overlooked (due to being so invested in the characters) such as the past vs. present composition of the two characters. I had completely overlooked that aspect but I can also guarantee that was also a major aspect of why I felt so distant in the present. You really brought to light some of the key components that made this film so effective. One notable feature I noticed was the use of color, in the present there are a lot of greens and blues used that really make you feel cold while the past (possibly due to the filmstock but no doubtably a stylistic choice) had a lot of warmer tones. To me this is reminiscent of the saying of 'looking back at the golden days'. This color theme has enough contrast to differentiate between the two period but is of an analogous scheme keeping them tightly knit and different from the complementary schemes that are favoured in most other films. I was on the side of Dean, probably because I found him to be psychological projection and incredibly relatable. Despite his many flaws his intent was always for her and their relationship. I apologise for the essay, your analysis was too good and thought provoking not to. You have without a doubt earned yourself a subscriber! If I can make a request, American Beauty (1999).

I found Dean to be sympathetic to an extent. He was charismatic and fought for his family, but he had a drinking problem and it seemed as though he never grew up. He couldn't have grown up conversations unless Cindy responded how he wanted and he acted goofy and immature throughout the present. I felt bad that Dean felt neglected and he clearly really cared for the relationship, but that wasn't enough for me to root for him. I've seen how a drinking problem can destroy a family and that managed to nullify my sympathy for Dean. I believe both sides made mistakes, but I understood Cindy's point of view better and sympathized with it more than I did Dean's. The relationship had become toxic and they needed to let go. I found this movie to be incredible when I watched it and I think a large part is because both Cindy and Dean's points of view were so well explored and you understood the feelings coming from both sides. I can understand how people can sympathize more with one side or the other and I appreciate that in a film.
@_MUSTSEEFILMS_6 жыл бұрын
So many good points about why this film really works because it stacks the understanding up on both sides and it becomes difficult to watch these two characters because you can emphasise with both.
@ceecee4729 Жыл бұрын
To me they both seemed to have drinking problems They weren't good at communicating with each other one needed to learn how to have a conversation without being dismissive and the other needed to listen without being condescending Dean really was living in the past and didn't see that their relationship was becoming unsalvageable as his wife was just NOT happy Cindy sees him as a mistake she made at a time she was vulnerable Dean treating the kid with so much love and affection not stooping to be angry with the kid when the mother wasn't really treating him well was heartbreaking Like based solely on that quality of his she could have gotten help for the issues they had She was projecting her failures onto him It was a lil creepy to see her blush at a guy that probably wud have been a horrible cheating husband and absentee father and wierd how she couldn't understand y her husband was scared shitless when he heard she talked to the ex... the one that showed up with 2 other dudes to beat him up... Idk to me Cindy seemed set on seeing the man she married as the cause of all her problems and Dean who probably has abandonment issues put up with her indifference to him because he wanted a family... I guess picking sides is natural but I did feel they could have made Dean just a tad more destructive to make Cindy's disgust for him a bit more believable She even seemed to want him to hit her so she could get a good enough reason to leave Marriage clearly isn't for everyone If you constantly think u can do better than the person ur with.... please stay single and have fun If you can try to meet a person halfway... knowing some days will be good and other days bad until u reach a transit state where you know who ur with and there is a feeling of calmness there,., please have babies and raise them the best u can with peace and love This is coming from a person with parents who had a shitty marriage because one was a stubborn violent man child unwilling to compromise and now I have 2 unbelievably shitty parents who have screwed up enough that now I have been blessed with an almost shitty marriage shituation where I can't seem to have a dialogue at all... trying to get into therapy but we both need to agree for that to work Dean's character was so relatable to me for that reason I guess 😅

Excellent film and another excellent analysis. I actually watched this movie because I noticed it was one of the ones that you reviewed. Since I work in the audio/visual field, I always notice camera work, so I certainly did pick up on the fact that they were framed together in the past and separately in the present. I also noticed while watching the scene where Gosling sings and Williams dances that it was improvised. No matter how good of a film maker you are, you can't stage a scene like that. So many rom/coms try to create these "cute meets" and "playful banter," but this was an excellent depiction of what actually takes place between a man and a woman when they begin dating. I was watching both characters clumsily make their way through the scene and I could actually feel what Gosling was feeling because I've experienced the same thing when I was dating my wife. As the film drew towards it's conclusion, I was cheering so hard for them to reconcile and work things out. But if they had remained together, it would not have stayed true to the realism of the film. I sided with Gosling but I understood why Williams had checked out of the relationship. She had other men pursuing her, Gosling was complacent to drink and do mindless work and he was reluctant to discuss the deep issues in their relationship. I think that was why she was questioning his manhood during the fight at the clinic. She wasn't doubting his ability to provide, protect or be a good father, she was accusing him of being unable to "man up" and work out their problems. Unfortunately, Gosling interpreted this as questioning his physical (not emotional) toughness so he proceeded to sucker punch the doctor. Again, great analysis and I look forward to watching more in the future.

It's hard to put Michelle's persepctive into words but you did it. I can see why she was unhappy with Dean. What struck me the most was the scene in the motel when she was trying to have an adult conversation and he was attacking her with nonsensical blabber "What is potential? What does potential even mean?" I can see why it would be hard to live with a person like that. We crave physical and emotional connection but the power of deep and fulfilling concersation is also important.

something i noticed about the colour in the film... in the past and before she meets dean, all of what cindy wear is blue (which obviously relates to the name of the movie, blue valentine). bobby also wears a lot of blue we can notice. dean, however, wears a lot of bright red because it's his uniform for the moving company and his leather jacket also has a stripe of red in it. so blue is a sad colour, and most of cindy's life is repetitive (her having multiple partners but never staying for very long, her parents' unhappy marriage, etc) which is why the colour blue is so present before she meets dean. then, dean comes along wearing a new colour, a bright red and he contrasts with everything in her life, which is probably why she finds him so attractive. she falls in love with him and bobby gets jealous and goes to the moving company to beat him up. when he does, he's wearing a blue shirt and dean is wearing a red one. this, i think, is when the colour contrast is the most obvious: cindy's abusive, jealous lover in blue, a sad, plain, depressing colour, and dean, the new light to her life in red, the colour of love, passion. when we cut to the present, the red gets less obvious, but is still somewhat present. dean no longer wears red though. but as soon as cindy runs into bobby at the liquor mart the blue colours start to reappear (like the bright blue lights at the motel) and is a sign that cindy is once again no longer happy with her relationship/life. when dean goes to her clinic and they start a fight, she's wearing a purple gown. purple= blue+red. it's a premonition of change, coming soon. cindy's coworker (the man who tries to take her out to dinner) is also wearing a purple tie, and the woman at the reception is wearing bright blue. no more red. the ending (of the present) shows no more signs of red or any colour resembling it. there you go, that's my analysis of colour thanks for reading this :)

It's a gritty film, and it is difficult,because on first viewing I thought no, this is depressing and lifeless. However, it stuck in my mind and I began to empathize with each character more closely. Gosling plays a much more human character whist Cindy was detached and cold, BUT Dean somehow became less appealing in the present.

i hope i can make a film that feels as real and raw as this one some day. i always think about what that film would ultimately be like and i often lean towards one that is a mixture between this one, moonlight, and the boyhood. a coming of age story that shows the struggle of not only love and relationships but of life and what people go through between the ages of 8 and 28.

Great analysis. I enjoyed this film a LOT... but Idk if I could ever watch it again. Pretty down and depressing. The good, happy moments only accentuate the terrible heartbreaking moments even more. Which I'm sure it's the point. But you see it's not a date movie, and it's not really a movie that you can watch after a break up or you might get suicidal lol. Great review yet again. I had no idea the past was shot on film whereas the present was digital. Thanks for that bit of insight. As far as 'choosing a side' goes the first time I saw it I did pick Dean as the slightly more sympathetic character. However the on a second watch I thought Cindy got a raw deal. It's really a 50/50 I suppose. Blue Valentine is such a hard watch though. Twice is enough for me. It feels too real and too tragic. Such a brutal brutal film :(

Great analysis of an strong and bold film. Blue Valentine felt so true to life, it was like an intrusion into real people's lives. I almost felt uncomfortable watching, which I think is a mark of a quality film. I loved how you demonstrated the techniques used by the filmmaker to achieve this - this made for interesting viewing in itself, thanks for this :) As for who I sided with.. well it's been a while since i watched. But I remember my sympathies shifting throughout the film. At first I was on the side of Dean. Then as the present came into it more, I could see Cindy's pov. By the end of the film I think I picked up the vibe that there were no heroes and villian's in this story, just two different people with their own backgrounds, flaws and qualities who happened to want different things out of life. So if the director wanted my sympathy 50/50 levels, he was successful. I'm not a fatalist though - I still think the relationship could have worked (or at least the break up could have been more amiable) if both Cindy and Dean had communicated what they wanted much sooner. Thanks again for the excellent analysis. Don't know if you've done this one before but may I make a polite request? Blue Ruin was among my favourite movie watching experiences recently. I'd love to see a film analysis of it by your good self!.

While watching the movie, I was split 50/50 regarding with whom I should side. For the most part, I sided with Cindy, as she had a rough situation at her family home and was clearly lost in life. Dean, on the other hand, struck me as irresponsible and abusive, at least in the parts that took part in the present. He didn't help her wife make breakfast for their child and when she made it, he critized her efforts instead of helping her, all the time while goofing around. Later, it was clear that he blamed for the death of the family's dog, even though she took it as hard as him. After burying the dog, he decides to go to a motel against her protests, claiming that this is somehting that they have to do right now. He completely disregarded the fact that she had to go to work the next day. On the way to the motel, he gets jealous when she claims that she met her old boyfriend and acted incredibly insecure about it, even though she was clearly trying to de-escalate the situation. Finally, when she had to leave in the morning to get to work, he got drunk and threw a tantrum. Still, towards the end of the movie I started to side more with Dean, particularly when I saw how good he used to be towards Cindy and, in particular, when he claimed that the situation wasn't just about them but that they had a daughter to think about. The end, where walks out the door only to have the daughter follow him was particularly heart-wrenching to me. All in all, a great movie, as it gives no easy answers on who should be blamed for the situation.

I adore this movie, sad, profound, interesting. For all the people siding with Dean- he sticks around, which is great, and is committed to the relationship, which is also great! But he's a real pain in the ass. When she finds their dead dog and is clearly beat up about it he kicks her while she's down. She is *very direct* about not wanting to go to a slummy motel when she needs to work early in the morning, and he's just not interested in her opinion. He was right to be angry at her leaving without telling him- that was messed up- but him punching her boss is going to ruin her job, which it's really not his place to do. Also he's an alcoholic- which is a challenge to put up with in its own right. I don't get how people can be mad at Cindy for being done and out of love. He is physically there, but he's not giving her the kind of love she needs. Really sad.

Hey, I don´t know why but I remember Mud and the jesus symbolism, and I don´t know if you notice but at the shootout scene when he gets shot, he gets the bullet in the ribs, exactly where christ received the longinus spear. And also, he gets the shot while jumping with arms open wide like jesus in the cross. Then he gets lost in deep waters like jesus descend into the underworld, and finnaly he gets rescued by the father figure that shows him a paradise like view, just like jesus going into heaven. Not only that, but the first time we meet mud is fishing by the boat, just like jesus meets his first follower on a fishing boat. I am sure there is more, but that is what I can think now. I turned this video off at 1:26, I love Wait's Blue Valentine album, much of his songs seem like they are written for the movies. Anyway, I'm gonna get the film first and then watch this analysis.

foleyd87 Just watched it. I can't really give much of an analysis at the moment. It takes me a while to digest stuff. Thanks for the analysis, I knew he was doing all kinds of things with the past/present (and future) but I had no idea he went to that level cinematically. Anyway, I'll probably write some more later.

Nice, please do, would love to hear more thoughts. It is a very deep film that does take a long time to emotionally digest.

foleyd87 Okay, that's long enough. It's quite difficult to analyse this film because I think it was shot extremely realistically without dream logic. The way he depicts the past and present are how our waking minds perceive things (through different lenses). There was no moral behind the story, it was just a bunch of stuff that happened. That said, this is why I liked it. I sometimes get weighed down with symbolism and overthinking that it's nice to have an artistic film that doesn't try to pull you in all kinds of directions. Like you said, he tries to make it so they were both depicted equally, it's as if a moderator had stepped in to give the audience an unbias look. The only real symbolic things I picked up on were the colours and the name of the room "future room" where their relationship had deteriorated into a boring loveless marriage. So really I think the best way to digest the film is to look at it from a relationship perspective. Even though you can tell Ryan Goslings character clearly loved his family, I think it was obvious that he didn't love himself. Either that or he thought he was entitled to unconditional love from his spouse. This is modern romanticism but in real life, it's relationship suicide. She was able to look past his humble beginnings but I can imagine that through their marriage, he passed up many opportunities to improve himself and his families situation which he passed up on for the simple life. This made her view him as a loser, especially with those around her (professor/doctor). I really liked his character but he came across as extremely naive, I almost wanted to slap him around the face at times and tell him to wake up man. Thanks for bringing this film to my attention. Looking forward to your upcoming videos.

Thanks man for all the thoughts, i agree with you about Goslings character, i have a mixture of frustration and pity towards him, i love his naiveness but at the same time its probably his downfall as you described and I'm sure that was the purpose of the Doctor to compare in Cindy's mind.

Great analysis, but i dont understand why did she leave Bobby (of course he is a jerk) ? it felt weird, they had sex and she gets mad because Bobby didn't use protection , i mean their relationship was too fast.

I feel both characters were equally at fault. They jumped into marriage WAY too fast. Honestly, the best thing for Cindy would been to have the abortion and continue on with her life. But my personal views aside, I feel like Dean and Cindy would have been a much better Fling or maybe like 6 month relationship. She was too mature in the beginning and Dean awoke the child in her. She was able to enjoy life and maybe fall in love for the first time. But then she became pregnant and Dean did the honorable thing and married her to take care of her. Dean loves Cindy, as evidenced by his looking for the run after throwing it. Cindy may have loved Dean in the beginning, but when they had to be serious and talk like adults, they weren’t able to do that. Cindy needed a man who was more mature, and he needed a woman less.
