Here is LRN2DIY Video: • I Learned to Weld In 1...
I have Nils with me in my garage teaching him how to flux core weld with his cheap $99 Harbor Freight Chicago Electric welder.
We started with the basics of settings, speed, stick out, removing that nozzle so you can see, stance or posture, and angle. He went from a total newb to throwing out a decent weld.
Yes some of the video is out of focus but it's the content that counts, right!!

I’m curious about these types of collaborations. Do you both live in the same area so that it wasn’t terribly difficult to be physically in the same place?

I live in the tropics and wear kevlar sleeves with cotton T shirts if available, long sleeve t shirts. Sometimes I wear a leather apron too. I got more burns wit the grinder than the welder! My helmet go on 9 indoor, 10 outdoors. This video was a good refresher...

6:24 In the 70’s auto darkening, adjustable lenses weren’t a thing, we had swappable lenses and you started in the dark (in old videos, you’ll see a welder position his body, then nod his head to drop the helmet). Tech has made welding so much more approachable.

Yea, pipe line welder still use fixed shade with their pancake helmets! Definitely adds to the skill of having to know where you are at to start the weld.

Good tips. I would call a 1/2" stickout a minimum with flux core. 1/2-3/4" for a range. The longer stickout helps to preheat the flux in the core giving a better flow. Nope, no expert here, just a tip from pro guy who taught me some basics. I bought the Titanium flux core from HF, a surprisingly good little welder. Giving a beginner the heads up on what duty cycle means might save them from burning up their first welder. Had a buddy who burned up his first one. I escaped that by reading the manual.😂

Thank you both, I learned and laughed! I have the Chicago Electric 125 amp and I too have had it sitting for years. I really enjoyed the video and of course I subscribed. I'm 69 and have a motorcycle repair and high performance shop. I do my own boring, valve grinding and port work(SuperFlow machine). After all these years, I need to finally learn to weld. I'm a bit slow, like the old dog and new tricks. Thank you again!

I was welding this afternoon and in short sleeves. It was in the 70s and it was hot as hell in the sun. I don't think my welding jacket would do me very good unless I wanted heat stroke. I gave up and will continue late in the PM. Great video.

Bought that welder couple years ago and rectified it to DC, I also replaced the ground wire/clamp with 4awg welding cable and a good clamp. Also replaced the power cable with a bigger gauge cable 4" ac fan screwed to the back and it welds 100x better provided you have good house power, I actually had the old blue HF flux welder that I did the same thing to but someone stole it guess they liked what I did with it.😢

I always stored my auto darkening helmet in the box but one day I started welding and the build in battery was dead because it never recharged from the little solar panel on the front of the helmet. Now my helmet hangs near a window.

They don’t recharge the battery. They just lessen the power being drawn when welding.

I have been miserable at night from welding for so one time with fcaw with a HF 125 welder. That sunburn and burnt skin smell is real even with the cheesiest of welders.

Don't compromise on your helmet even if the cost is way more than the welder. You only have one set of eyes.

The stick out isn’t enough. You need 5/8” to close to 3/4” with fluxcore. Less than that doesn’t give anything enough time to melt properly. MiG is closer to 3/8” to 1/2”.

I got the titanium easy flux 125 welder in august. Love it. Learning to weld really well. I’ve come a long way in the last 2 months. I’m hoping to get the Chicago electric arc welder over the winter to start with some stick welding. After a year or so I’ll move into the Miller/Lincoln machines and get myself some really nice ones

You only have one set of eyes so why would anybody chance it on a budget auto lens !!!those cheap ones are pretty sketchy ! I always see spots like crazy with my cheap one !!! Got a quality one & it’s like night & day no pun intended :) I suggest to not sacrifice a few dollars on yur vision which is sooo much taken for granted . Yur claim that you do not an expensive lens is pretty piss poor info !!! Sorry about being critical of yur statement but eyes are so very precious !!!!

I didn't see any welding here................just a puddle line. As a final step, should have tried welding a couple of pieces together, putting the final piece on a vise and see how strong the weld was.
