Hi Charlie, You made this flute the way I make them, but I don't want to lie, so I better turn it around: I make my flutes like you made this one because I learned it from you, using a lot of movies in which you showed how to make your flutes. I would like to thank you very much for that. Although I use a cork that is easy to replace as plug and valve. I make my flutes from PVC, but I choose the thick-walled pipe for that, because bamboo is also thick-walled and where I live there is nowhere to get bamboo and that does not grow anywhere. To drill the finger holes I use a thin drill bit after which I continue with narrow and widening flat screwdrivers. And for the windhole I use a drill and a small flat file. Instead of those flat screwdrivers I sometimes use scissors that I do not open during use, you can drill holes from small to large with them. I also make my Quenas in this way, also from PVC. People love to hear me play my PVC Native American flutes because they sound good and clean. My name is Chief Helping Dog Blackwolf Javanclaronaje Jerovanja make Rodinu White Dove. The name my mother gave me is Jacobs Ronald Felix, called Ronny, because this sounds easier to my bystanders. My descent caused my white Belgian father to kill my unborn brother while trying to kill my mother and me, my mother survived by running away from him with me in her arms, I owe my life to that too, but I did lose it my unborn brother, I was 16 months young at the time and I never got to know my father, I am also very happy because it is good not to know a murderer as a father. Now I know from my mother that I am a mixed-blood Apache, that I was born on the border with America-Mexico, through a Czech and a Native Apache who were guest workers and they traveled in covered wagons looking for work. When I was born, my parents lived in Belgium, where they still live, and yes, the murderer is still alive, but I don't know where and that's a good thing. Fortunately, after she ran away with me, my mother was taken in with me by a man who was 19 years older than my mother and who already had 3 sons, when my mother became pregnant by him and thus had a family with a new man and 5 children she herself was just 20 years old because when my mother dropped out of school because of her work she was 16 years old, when she married she was 17 years old when I was born my mother was 18 during the deliberate murder of my brother and the two attacks I was 16 months, when my half sister was born I was 2 years old and my mother 20 years and my half sister is 2 years younger than I am. My foster father was a good man, he died in 2008, God rest his soul I'm sure. In this way my compliments for everything you do for people, I would also like to thank you for that. persevere. Greetings from Belgium from Helping Dog Blackwolf. I am very happy and proud of my heritage. A'ho.

Nice project Charlie! I have made a few side blown 6 hole flutes in G and Bb that sound good. Also made a 6 hole Native American "style" flute. Really want one that is 5 hole to experiment with. Had not considered what I guess would be a fipple mouth piece. As a suggestion, I use a board with two parallel strips attached the width of pipe appart to help hold the pvc while drilling. Also aids in drawing a straight line for holes if desired. If sanding the outside with rough sand paper over time as you mentioned it picks up some oils and dirt, almost looks like birch. Thanks again for posting!

I have made your flutes in PVC not exactly the same way you made them but it’s in the pentatonic scale I would like one an E minor with the Low D behind it. I’ve seen the figuring for using your fingers on the native American flute but I noticed there’s a finesse that makes it so when you lift and lower your finger over a certain hole it will bend the note I can’t seem to get that with the PVC fluid that I made help if you can if not cheers mate

Hi Charlie, this looks quite easy to make. Does the length of the slow air chamber (SAC) matter with these PVC flutes? The wooden flute that I bought had a SAC of at least 8 in, but perhaps this is a more traditional design? I am seeing some other NA style PVC flute makers keeping the SAC length short as well, perhaps its easier to push a dowel or cork through it.
@BlueBearFlutes
@BlueBearFlutes 14 күн бұрын
That's a great question my friend! I believe I actually did a video that included some of this topic as well however the short answer is no. The length doesn't matter too much. I have actually lengthened my flutes air chambers in order to make them more aesthetically appealing to the public. Historically they were all over the place as well as in modern times! Thanks for the great question!

I did one modification in my build: I found the 3/4 dowel too small so I used 7/8 which fit with no sanding and worked great. The notes I get are A, C, E, F# (+35), and A. Were we aiming for A, C#, E, F#, A? Where is the calculator I should use for my next one? Thanks for this project!

Thanks very much for the instructions. This is very cool. Just one question though. It seems odd that a 7/8" dowel fits inside a 3/4" PVC pipe. How does that happen? I just grabbed some 3/4" pipe and a 5/8" dowel fits inside with a tiny bit of room to spare. Thanks, John

This is interesting. But the flaw in this design is the introduction of a wood dowel that will expand/contract with moisture from breath condensation. The easy fix is to file a flat spot and cut a short piece of pvc that's one size larger diameter than the long section. Use it as a 1 or 2 inch clip on cover. Then, use a wine bottle cork for an interior plug. You can keep your holes straight by marking the pvc against a piece of plywood or similar lengthwise. Also, sanding then brown shoe polish and clear coat looks realistic if simulating wood.

@@BlueBearFlutes Don't dismiss using pvc as a nontraditional flute making source material. I'm making clay flutes and gradually getting better results and your videos have been very helpful in understanding what makes a flute work. So far I've concentrated on tuning and getting soundholes working and have been happily making them without a slow air chamber. So I'm getting playable pentatonic flutes that aren't fully native american style. Could you maybe demonstrate the difference that adding a slow air chamber will make? It might motivate me to make the effort, as at present, I'm not sure what the benefit is.

Charlie I just watched the video again and I think this will be the next one I will try to make. Thank you for your videos! Don’t know if it helps people in identifying the proper pipe or not, but The sdr in the print on the pipe tells the wall thickness. It is a dimensional ratio (the DR part of SDR) of the outside diameter. Outer diameter of 3/4” pipe is 1050 thousandths smaller r 1.050”. Divide 1050 by 21 in this case and you have a wall thickness of .050.

@lenval555 Entschuldigung, dass ich dich ausgetrickst habe. Anscheinend können Sie Zoll problemlos in Millimeter umrechnen.

No problem. The point is, you have no attention span and you think that you want to learn something but truthfully you only want to see someone else do it and you want it to be quick and easy! Well, it ain't quick and easy! If you're going to get all of this info, hundreds of videos I've posted and all this experience for free you're going to have to listen to all of my inane babbling! Maybe if you pay close attention, you just might learn something!
