When I first started using super glue with models, I burned my eyes so bad they actually started to bleed so bad it blurred my vision. I went to the doctor and received a proper instruction of how to use super glue, and also an expression of my lack of intellect (a doctor and a good friend) while using superglue. It took about a week for my vision to return to normal. The gas produced when heating super glue is dangerous! Folks, he is correct. Super glue is great stuff, WHEN USED PROPERLY! Glad I found your videos. Thanks.

To think that this stuff was originaly invented for 'stiching' wounds. Which is the main reason it will glue your skin so well. That said... do take note that not all superglues are pure cyano acrylate and that the aditives might not be so good for wound use.

I have just got a piece of dry standing elder today, I've hollowed out the pith on both ends, but left the knot space between each end instead to accommodate the track , no need for splitting this way I hope...should I now make a hole each side of the knot ready for the holes to be shaped?

Great information sir. I create Native American Flutes out of cedar and Bamboo and this area is always a bit tricky to get right. Whistle style flutes are much easier to create. I use a taller, carved block on top with I believe it's called a 'chimney' or channel where the air from second hole shoots up through to make that beautiful flute sing. I'm watching all of your incredible knowledge filled videos. Love the deep toned Drone Flutes. I may have to purchase a kit. I'm so excited that you are getting into Meso American flutes. I've a small collection of Ancient Mexican cultural flutes & whistles all in clay as well as many Peruvian flutes & whistles. The double chamber Pre-Columbian flute you made with 3 holes on one side and 3 on other is just gorgeous and the sound is quite haunting yet beauteous. Great work sir.

Even on an app phone, I can hear the difference in the deep track and the repair. I made a PVC flute (my first) just for practice. It sounded like a sick tweety bird in a wind srorm. Next try - a bamboo cane .. bound to be an improvement.

Could I make an Octogon in length, and turn it on the Lathe and round it out on the outside? And then make a Flute this way? I'm assuming I could, or even leave it an Octo for easier Hole alignment. Or even possibly make a Segmented Flute. Also what is the total Length of the Flue and Hole Placement? I'm only asking cause if I glue pieces together into a long octo, it would be hollow and I wouldn't have to find other material that is hollow liek Bambo.

Hey Marc, that's a great question! Since it is called River cane, you can kind of get an idea of where it might would be. I can't guarantee that it grows in the New England area although I have seen it growing all over the southeast of the United States. It's not uncommon in Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. No Bernard, as a matter of fact I drill the sound hole out and then flatten the surface with the bit which makes the second hole (air supply hole). In some cases the hole made by the forstner bit is enveloped in the track itself.

The specifics on the track, how wide, how far apart do the square holes have to be and how far down from the beginning of the flute does it need to be? Also, on another video you mentioned that the ramp needs to align perfectly with the knife part, yet on this video it didn't seem that important... I'm confused! My first attempt did not produce any sound at all, but that makes me more eager to build another. I'd rather fail the first hundred times and gain wisdom, than be successful by chance and learn nothing.

+whmozart Thanks for watching my videos! We have a lot of new ones coming up that I know you will enjoy. The sound hole distance from the mouthpiece is personal preference. Rim blown flutes have the sound hole on the mouthpiece! We make all of ours approximately 4 inches so that the flute isn't too long to play and also so that it looks nice. The distance between the sound hole and air supply, too is personal preference. Mine are about 1 inch. there is a general rule of thumb, fr the right "diameter" sound hole for small flutes approximately 3/16" to 1/4" and for large flutes about 5/16" is perfect. All of this of course is dependent on personal preference.

Very interesting. I've made about a dozen bansuri flutes. At first I thought I was doing it wrong because i never got a sound from them but it turns out that I wasn't blowing into it correctly. A friend of mine who spent some years in Taos asked if I would make a Native American flute for him. I have an endless supply of bamboo and I have selected some beautiful pieces for him. I'm intimidated but this video has eased my nerves so thanks for posting. I want to ask if you have ever done any museum quality flutes or ones that you spent some extra time making and decorating? Charlie, as a first flute, I bought one of those finish-it-yourself flutes off eBay. I was surprised, when I removed the block, to see that the flute has only an air supply hole and a sound hole: there is no track. Instead, the track is routed into the bottom of the block. To my untrained ear, it sounds okay (it sounds even better now that I have sharpened the knife edge of the sound hole), but it is very sensitive as to block position, as otherwise the track can get canted, relative to the holes. I have started a flute jar that I am tossing money into, saving up to buy a good flute from you. But in the meantime, should I put a track into the body of this flute, and replace my block with a flat-bottomed one? Or will I just change a sort-of-okay-sounding flute into a horrible-sounding one, if I try that?

There are a few things that can cause your flute not to play. Even though most of my videos show start to finish how to do this, often times a beginner misses one step or looks past it. For this reason, I have made numerous videos on the same subject. A couple of recommendations I have would be to watch any of the videos such as the secret to flute making, how to perfect the track, the best track for native american flutes, my tiki torch video, and several others. If these don't help you solve the problem, feel free to contact me through my website so that I can have you send a picture of the flute to me. Recently, I have had someone from one of the reddits I moderate send me a flute (he said he follows my KZbin videos) but when I received his flute to help him with it, it doesn't look like any techniques I have taught anyone. 😄

Charlie, one concern I had was the glue squeezeout when joining the blanks. Outside no issue, but how can you clean up the inside? White wood glue hardens like a rock and inside is hidden until after the lathe turning. BTW - I LOVE this video and am awaiting the burning tool I ordered from you.

Hey Tom, that is a good question. When I glue my flutes together I usually use just enough to stick them together and not so much that it squeezes out very much at all on either side. If you do get some run out on the inside you can clean this out by using a rod on the end of a drill with some sandpaper attached to the other end.

i noticed that the holes burnt wern't in half and half of the joint one hole was very close to the joint is there a reason for that ?

The sound hole needs to be as close to the joint as possible, however if you put the sound hole and the air supply hole next to the joint there will only be about 1/8" to 1/4" between them making a very short track.

you can put the flue edge of the tsh hole as far as 5/8 of the bore diameter away from the plug without any ill effects. i like to use about 1/4- 3/8 of the bore diameter to leave a bit of material to square the edge of the flue if i burn a hole a little crooked. keeping the flue short helps a lot with reducing or preventing the flute from watering out. installing the sac hole away from the membrane is ok if you fill the space with some other material so it's flush with the flue edge. not filling it tends to leave a sharp edge that will work as a whistle inside the sac, which can sound "interesting."

That's pretty close to mine. It's almost a little too thick, but not by much. In some cases the angle of the track makes a big difference too.

BlueBearArts I had a feeling it would be close. When I get one that is a little airy, I sand it down from the top to bring it in. Mine are all from scrap wood from the totem pole shop so its red and Alaskan yellow ceder. I started ramping up from the slow air chamber too. Thanks for the videos. It shows I'm on the right track.

BlueBearArts I keep a flute log on my channel of every flute I've made. From the very first (ugly flute) to the latest one. I've only been doing it for a little over a year now. All trial and mostly error. :0) My fetish carving has gotten better! Now if I could only learn how to play them. :0)

Yes, cyanoacrylic uses moisture to cure. That is why it burns, very caustic. Which is why you need to not have it on your fingers/hands when you go pee, etc...they also use a less toxic version of this to close wounds in the medical field. Amazing stuff. I had them glue my finger tip together one night after a long day around too many sharp objects, which is also why you should have sharp tools, they are safer than dull ones. 😘

It's not "cyanoacrilic" like this moron in the video says -- it's cyanoacrylate. And it absolutely does NOT need moisture to set. You're probably thinking of moisture-cured RTV silicone adhesives. And the cyanoacrylate used by doctors is EXACTLY the same stuff -- just manufactured under stricter standards. If you don't know what you're talking about, just shut the hell up.

Larry Vess, the forstner bit is 1 7/8"

BlueBearArts I finally got a drill press and slapped in a 1 7/8" forstner bit, I noticed the guide spike in the middle of the bit and ended up having to wood puddy that hole. Should I grind off that spike? Is that the remedy? Thanks.

Greg, I usually use that point for the air supply hole, or it becomes a part of the track. I will do a video on that subject this week if I can.

hey thanks! i bought the 40.00 forstner bit set from harbor freight and the spike is pretty long....but i recon it helps stabilize whatever piece is being leveled. Learning something new here, thanks for all the help!!

Your flutes always have vibrato sound. How do you accomplish that? I have now made three and none of them vibrato.
