I did not know that jams and jellies could be store baught until I joined the navy. For, my grandmother made all the jams and jellies we used. Nothing can beat my grandmothers jams and jellies. I am surprised by how small the batches that are made in these videos. My grandmother made really big batches. The kettle she used was about 3 feet deep and she had to stand on a stepstool and use a long handled paddle to stir the jams and jellies and a long handled masher. I remember those days well she canned blackberry, blueberry, boysenberry, grape, huckleberry, raspberry, and strawberry jams, jellies, and preserves. Also, she did pepper and pickle relish and what she called chilli sauce I refer to call it tomato relish. She also did pickling. All of which was great. My mother and all my aunts would join her in the kitchen and me as a young boy who enjoyed cooking would join in for that event.

That is so wonderful, I love reading old stories of yesteryear and of childhood memories. This is what they are made of cooking and spending family time in the kitchen. Our videos are to teach anyone that haven't made anything or forgot a recipe that reminds them of their childhood, also looking to learn to cook or bake. I only make it in small batches so theres no waste, all of the recipes can be made in bigger batches. Our breads are for three loafs and we still get people looking for one loaf. But my mom and grandma would make 10 loafs a bread at a time but their families was big. I'm so glad you stopped by, we have lots of jams, jellies, soups, stews, relishes and pickles available at www.bonitaskitchen.com if you wish to check them out. Stay safe and thank you :) Bonita

Sensational video Bonita! It's so nice seeing a fellow Newfoundlander enjoying nature's gift as it was meant to be enjoyed, as a jam! I hope you continue to spread the word about blueberries and blueberry products so that the rest of the world may indulge in them as we Newfoundlanders can! Being a witch doctor, I myself regularly tell my patients to frequently eat blueberries because of their restorative properties. In my many years of work I have found that even the presence of blueberries in our day-to-day lives can be very beneficial to our health. Please know that if you stop making these videos you will be doing the world a disservice. ~Best wishes, Alexandria Fudge xoxo

Alexx Fudge I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kind words and lovely message, it's because of people like you that makes me love my job. This was one of the reasons I starting Bonita's kitchen years ago so I can make our cultural foods and cultural more available for many people to enjoy. I also love making everything in season and buying fresh produce local, I can't say enough about that. I agree totally about blueberries they are so so good for you and right in our back yard for those of us that are living in Newfoundland and Labrador. Thank you once again you have made my day. 🤗 Bonita

Thanks for the great Vid. I have a question. can i take 1/2 the barriers and send them though a food blender, and mix it with the 2 cup to make it easier to cook on the stove? or would that not work? (anyone may answer)

I am confused about the cook time. You say to cook for 30 min, but the pectin insert says cook your jam for 1 min, no more, no less. Is the 1 min cook time only if you add the pectin? If you use no pectin in your jams recipes, must you cook it for 30 min to set?

Could you cut sugar way back to say a cup & half ? I’m going to make tomorrow.
@bonitaskitchen4 жыл бұрын
You can but remember the sugar is what makes the jelly, so you may need to add certo or pectin if you lessen the sugar. All the best and enjoy :) Bonita

Making right now. I went with your suggestion of 2 1/2 cups. Wish me luck ‘
@sheteg14 жыл бұрын
It’s really good. Next time I will do just 2 cups Instead of 2 1/2 cups of sugar. It’s just me. I’m not a sugar person.
@bonitaskitchen4 жыл бұрын
@@sheteg1 Sounds good and thank you for following up, you can play around with the sugar but remember sugar is one of the main ingredients. Thank you and enjoy. :) Bonita

Beware not processing those jars in a hot water bath if you are going to store them on a shelf. It's not safe to store jars of jam produced as shown in this video anywhere other than freezer/refrigerator.
@bonitaskitchen6 жыл бұрын
Hi Cheryl: Thank you for your message and for visiting my channel, these jams are safe to store on the shelf or other wise. The mason jars were sterilized in hot water first and then after the jam was hot going into the bottles. Following the sterilization process after the mason jars are full is very important, but if the bottles seal there is no need to put them in a water bath after. Checking to see if the caps are sealed by removing the rims, putting your finger under the caps if they don't pop up, screw the rims on again and date and store. I hope this clears up any misunderstanding you have about these delicious bottles of blueberry jam. Bonita
