Pinestraw is a good weed barrier for the small farm. Pulling weeds or sprouted sweetgum is necessary. No herbicide will deal with a sweetgum or water oak tree sprouting in the center of your plant after it is a few inches tall. Weed eaters are a small farmers best friend if you don't want to use glyphosate constantly.

Just use wood chips! 4-6" thick.. I myself hate the plastics leaching into my edibles.. but I'm an organic grower so I'd never use that.. just my 2cents
