Bluecoats 2023 | Garden of Love - Bump Transcription (Early Season)

This is my transcription of "Bump", as performed by the 2023 Bluecoats.
Disclaimer: This was done 100% by ear, and it is not 100% accurate. I tried to get it as close as possible, but doing so was not easy as this recording wasn't the clearest & it was an early season run through.
Also, I incorrectly listed it as part 4. I believe it is part 5.

Nice! Couple things I noticed: 1:19 is not all half-steps, it’s planing whole-step-half-step motion. 1:37 the low brass are on chords, not unisons. Hope this helps as you continue to fine-tune the arrangement! Great work!

Thanks! Supposedly it was actually written in 4, but 12/8 made more sense with all the odd triplet subdivisions

it is in 4 with a switch to a fast 3 a measure after the drums modulate. the bones have the 1 and 3 of the slow pulse, and the upbeat hits on the la of the quarter note triplet subdivision. lotta weird timing stuff in this piece, would probably be impossible to transcribe 100% accurately

0:04 - i wanna say the bones are mostly in a duple feel throughout the movement, counter adjacent to the 12/8 meter. if you listen closely, they play more in a *sixteenth note pulse* (of course except when they do the glisses). other than that, good work man. you’ve got a good ear.

This also applies to the Mellophones at measure 17; sounds more like groups of two 16th notes instead of two 12/8 8th notes.

Probably not, if you use it in a show though you do need to get the rights to use it. Although I doubt it’s very expensive for a hs show

IMO everything is 16th note subdivided, except the offbeat chords which are on the second triplet as you notated. If you listen to the source material, however, you can throw transcribing out the window. It's super wonky and off-grid lol

It’s a metric modulation on the upbeat, when it’s perfectly in time the percussion and hornline will have different downbeats for a measure

Can confirm that the 3/4 is, infact, 9/8. The measure before the 3/4 section starts is also in 9/8, which explains the "upbeat metric modulation"
