Worst Spring Weed in the Lawn and How to Kill it

I show the worst spring weed in the lawn and teach you how to kill it without killing your grass. The weed is poa annua. I can't wait for the weather to warm and poa to be gone for another year. There are weed control options to control poa. I use specticle flo or prodiamine in the fall as pre emergent herbicide to control poa annua or annual bluegrass. For post emergent control, I use Revolver herbicide on bermuda and zoysia lawns. Other options are celsius, katana or negate. It is a nasty weed that can take over the lawn.

I've gotten better results with Katana in recent years than I did with Revolver. Both are slow kills in winter months though. Thanks for your videos! Very helpful.

Great content Jason. Northern cool season lawn here. (Jersey - Mostly Tall Fescue, with Kentucky Blue & Rye). I have pretty much eliminated my Poa Annua the past few seasons with regular fall applications of Prodiamine or Dimension. However, Poa Trivialis, (which is a perennial) is another story. There is no true selective herbicide to combat it. And being a perennial, pre emergents are ineffective. It's invasive as hell. Fortunately after the first 4 or 5 mowings of the season and once the weather warms up, it dies off. But until that happens (usually end of April up here) it's God awful ugly. Every spring is worse than the last and I'm afraid it's going to eventually wipe out my desirable turf. Which will only leave the option to do a completely kill off and reseed.

Here in Tennessee I apply wood ashes during the winter and crabgrass/goose grass pre emergent . I like violets and clover so I no longer use 24D . The only problem is dallis grass which has be mechanically removed . A six acre lawn would require a small fortune to have perfect Bermuda grass .

If you are targeting poa and broadleaf/ nutsedge you can also use Certainty . It is expensive too but it works 👍🏽

Jason, i also tell my customers to bag their clippings for the next say month until it starts to die to collect as much of those seeds as possible. Negate does work pretty well and is pretty inexpensive compared to others.

In my area we have glyphosate resistant poa. Only thing we can spray here is cool season grass that will even touch poa is Ethofumesate.

I googled it for you Jason. It’s fine to use the H in the word herbicide “In British English, herb and its derivatives, such as herbaceous, herbal, herbicide, and herbivore, are pronounced with h. In American English, herb and herbal are more often pronounced without the h, while the opposite is true of herbaceous, herbicide, and herbivore, which are more often pronounced with the h.”

I believe a rotation with spectile flo and simazine is amaing combination for POA, I believe some people also use galley (isoxaben) as a pre-m for poa. I think Specitle usually returns the best results but if you rotate those 3 throughout the season it seems like it returns great results.

If you spray your new customer with spectacle in spring, it will kill the poa that is already up. I don't get poa on my lawns using spectacle in the fall except maybe around drainpipes or maybe near a tree in shade. I backpack those spots with certainty. Spectacle is awesome in the spring for new customers with poa.

Double check your rate per acre. Max it out for a clean lawn. Also take note of wet, thin and runoff areas. They will need a follow up.Your herbicide is only as good as it's longevity and weed seed pressure.

You think you hate it in your warm season grass, you should try dealing with it in a cool season lawn. 😓 My only option other than trying again next year is a $500 bottle of spray that is professional grade only.

POA reeks Havoc here in Southern California. Unfortunately most of the products that are needed / used to kill POA are Banned for sale here.

I don’t know about poa but I expect we have it. That said, if you think nutsedge is bad in a lawn, try getting it out of vegetable garden beds - especially when you are growing organically. All you can do is pull it repeatedly.

SE of Dallas, my yard has scattered poa. I used Stagreen pre-emergent and sprayed Image on the yard, first part of February. The poa is flexing it's muscle. Would it be better to mow and let it die out w higher temps and hit it w pre-emergent in the Fall or do i treat it again in a few weeks? Thanks for your videos!

Hey neighbor I live in North Dallas and sprayed my poa with tenacity ( got from Amazon) and it killed it , took 2 applications, 2 weeks apart and your good .

my cool season weed nemesis is rescuegrass. it's all over my neighborhood so I'm always getting seeds blown in from the neighbors. Certainty with Celsius seems to do ok on it

Do you apply if even after the Bermuda is greened up or do you use it in the Fall then early Spring? I've got a rescue grass problem as well.

@@hookem7030 sure you can apply anytime, but these two herbicides work best in warm weather. I would just spot treat right now instead of a broadcast application. It may slightly delay greenup in areas where applied but, beats looking at rescuegrass

Natural grasses are designed to take over lawns. They’re not weeds, they are grasses. I get it, lawn people are paid to put and keep only one species or variety of grass. But the actual natural grass looks fine and feeds the diversity of soil biology
