I have a pretty thick 7” tall 4” width applewood in my tank. When I first got it I boiled it and kept in water for a week before placing in my tank. For nearly 5yrs now it hasn’t broken down, no biofilm, no rot, no white spots etc. It’s been amazing trunk piece for my ropefish to hide in. Been one of the best pieces. I have multiple applewood pieces in my tanks and never had issues.

That's awesome that piece has lasted so long! Hardwood traditionally has a longer life than softwood, but most wood does start to have issues around a few years regardless. I'll have to look into it some more!

I almost put a huge piece in my 125 gallon tank glad I found this, I was skeptical of the wood to begin with I paid a lot for it ahhhh makes sense it would be better suited for terrariums!

Sorry, but I don’t agree with a few things on your video. First one will be the fact that you think you cannot get variations. Well, I’m from Romania and mostly in every rural household will have a grape wine that is grown massively. You need the root and the thick bottom parts, they can be huge . Second: decaying.Yes, it takes time to get it right, however, if you dry it and give it a big boil it will do just ok, I had a big root and even branches for years, never had biofilm for more then 3-6 days, I had biofilm issues with mopani 😅. I had a big piece for about 3years, I gave it away before moving to Scotland 9 years ago,the guy still has it. 3rd, you are comparing it agains cholla “wood”. Well that is actually the skeletal husk from a cactus with the same name.Cholla is rather used as a botanical and hiding space for shrimp and small fry, especially plecos. The issue regarding the grape wood is how is harvested, “processed “and marketed, you will get mostly trimmings that farmers will be glad to get rid of, pet shops will take it and brand a low quality piece as something suitable for fish without being treated at all.

Thanks for you comments! Its interesting to hear you can get variations in other places - in Canada, the only place you can find grape wood IS the fish store and it all looks the same. From my research on it, it seems the pieces sold are identical. This could be due to your comment of only selling the "rejects" - I always comment and research the fish hobby specifically, so in that case, they're always small and the same shape! Definitely interesting to read your personal experience/knowledge with it - It would be cool to see it as an actual plant in someone's home. I personally know that cholla wood is actually a cholla cactus skeleton, I did make a video on cholla prior to this one where I learned its origin. As a result from that video, I did get a few comments that they were surprised it was a cactus skeleton - so not everyone knows! Maybe they will see your comment and learn something too! Calling it "cholla wood" in this video is just because that's what it's called in every pet store I've been at and sold as online, so I try to call it as someone would google it or research it if they saw it in a pet store. Perhaps it is just a colloquialism? It might not be known as cholla wood outside of North America! Lastly, (sorry these are out of order to your comments!) I've heard Mopani - and Malaysian driftwood- occasionally being crazy with the output, and cholla wood/cactus being unmanageable in some people's tanks. I like to stick with the majority experiences when I make these videos, but I'll keep in mind your advice to also mention that there ARE outliers! :) Some things that might work great for one (Mopani is amazing for me and I'd recommend it to EVERYONE), might not work for everyone. Thanks again!
