yep I hate that damn drum which somebody thought would make bluegrass appeal to the Nashville country music fans. Bobby plays that mandolin almost like a typewriter but note his use of syncopation. Bobby's underrated as a mandolinist. So who's the second banjo picker or is Sonny playing both parts?

I've had the album for years and messed around (on banjo) with a bunch of the tunes, but never really tried figuring out John Henry Blues. After listening to it again tonight (after years of not having heard it), it sounds like the banjo is tuned GCFBbEb (from 5th string to 1st). It works out pretty well in this tuning (you can hear the strings' harmonics at the end which gives away the tuning). Sonny was a really creative banjo player (though I have heard that medical problems have prevented him from playing much these days).

The drums are one of my favorite instruments but come on how I agree with these guys in the earlier comments I'm also an avid bluegrass fan and drums definitely don't belong in bluegrass music at all it definitely takes away from the music in a big way which is not ok at all!!!!!

For me drums and bluegrass do not mix and the constant drumming here doesn't cut it.

ebergeron The original lp I bought didn't have that damn drum. I wore out the album and the replacement came with the added percussion. This version is also on the Bear Family boxed set. Phooey!

Every original bluegrass band recorded with drums at some point, and the drums are doing nothing that the mando and bass weren't already doing. I've never understood this attitude at all.
