The whole point is that these are songs that you CAN sing, and are easily passed from person to person, unlike modern music. That was how you learned songs back in the day, by listening to others play them.

I'm 23 mexican and black but grew up in Tx in the south, my dad and grandpa love this bluegrass and folk music, it's carried on with me. From the style, the instruments, the sound, especially when it has a lo-fi quality, it's the perfect music for anything you'd have to say. I can't talk to any of my friends about this because they don't really appreciate music. I play in punk, metal, folk bands of anykind so a lot of the punk and metal guys just don't get it. Thank you for this.

I am so so glad I grew up in the country and learned how to hunt, fish, track, wood work, and so much more. I will be teaching my kids what I have learned, I believe they will need it. I ask some people today I work with, if they know how to start a fire without a match or lighter. How to make Pine Needle tea, how to use Pine sap. What wild vegetation to eat. What Wild strawberries look like. I say 95% of the people I work with do not know. The town I grew up in only had 630 people. Today there is just over 800. All Farming community.

There is a difference between this and Bluegrass. This is the real "old timey music," but Bluegrass adds a five string banjo played Scruggs style, fiddle, etc and Bill Monroe was its father. Bluegrass uses a lot of improvisation, much like jazz. It is the jazz of country music. That is the way I like to think of it. Love both kinds of old music.

I find guys like that (and people who only listen to dubstep, or rap, or pop, or whatever) often don't even understand the music that they claim to like. What they like is the IMAGE or the lifestyle of that music, but they don't really feel their music, nor do they have the imagination to enjoy a variety of different styles. I love just about anything, and I love how music relates to and effects humans.

Hello there, first of all, thank you for replying to me, I really appreciate that. I actually found out the name of the song, and am currently in the process of learning it, both instrumentally and working on some harmonies. It was actually covered by most of the big names in country music, such as Johnny Cash, Doc Watson, Dolly, Emmylou, and Linda etc. Fantastic song! Thank you again though.

Wished I had a dollar for every time I heard my old folks playing this kind of music back in the 1940s in Arkansas and Texas. It was called bluegrass in the late 40s early 50s by my Dad after Bill Monroe named it on national TV.

I am a 27 year old woman from the inner city UK and I love this music, I have been trying to find out more but struggling to, my only reference is movies and searching youtube but would love to know more about it and any appreciation societies online etc? I would love to visit the US and experience it 1st hand. I feel a real affinity to this music but feel very far removed, if anyone could post links where I could find out more I would be very appreciative!

This is actually "Mountain Music" not Bluegrass. Bluegrass was "invented" around 1949 by Bill Monroe. Bluegrass obviously descended from "Mountain Music", but "Mountain Music" is much older, and is an adaptation of traditional music from the British Isles as performed by the Scots-Irish (AKA Ulster Scots in the UK) who were the Frontier Folks who settled the Southern Appalachian Mountains in the mid 1700"s onward. "Mountain Music" (AKA "Hillbilly" music genre) is the solid bedrock roots of the entire spectrum of modern American music from Folk & Gospel, thru Country, Rock, Pop and R&B". In 1927, during the Bristol TN recording Sessions by Victor Recording, the Original Carter Family (Sara, Maybelle and A. P. Carter) introduced this Appalacian Folk music to a worldwide audience. Differing from traditional Hillbilly banjo & fiddle lead instrumentals, the fabulous Carter Family used autoharp and guitar instrumentals to create a unique Folk Style and Sound that easily crossed musical genres. The Carter's unique style and sound in effect became the focusing lense from which originated the broad rainbow spectrum of modern American Music.
