I grew up in the suburbs in Ohio and Florida. When I was 14, I went to Chicago, the first big city I ever step foot in. It's a whole different world. I was stunned and forever in love with city life. I've now lived outside of Seoul for four years, and I've been to global cities across the world--from Singapore to London. Chicago will always be the most inspiring to me and, of course, the Midwest's greatest city.

Miami is more of a lush tropical vacation destination and Chicago is more of an industrial concrete jungle. I think Matt picked his color profiles well to represent the general mood of these places. Chicago would look almost too playful like Las Vegas if a more punchy LUT was used.
@BlueMantleFilms5 жыл бұрын
Yep...it's about mood. And not only is Chicago industrial...it was also autumn and it snowed while I was there, so the muted colors were meant to reflect the feel of it. If I had really wanted to take the colors to an extreme I could have made them really cool tones also. I tried that, though, and it was a bit too much for the video, so I just went with the muted tones.

I want to try doing things like the ones you show us in your video? Could you give me some recomedancion to fly the drone there? I will have my faa permission, but something else? Saludos desde Paraguay 🇵🇾❤️🙌
@BlueMantleFilms5 жыл бұрын
Getting your drone registered with the FAA is obviously important (so good!) but I’m guessing by “FAA permission” you don’t mean that you obtained a Part 107 certificate? The thing with a Chicago is that they have a city ordinance against operating drones in the city, but they do leave a carve-out for FAA-approved flights. I don’t remember the wording of the ordinance, but my understanding was it had to be Part 107 or Part 333 Operations, not hobbyist operations which it sounds like you’d be operating under. So you’d want to be aware of that and know that police could stop you and ask you to stop flying, and possibly could even give you a ticket. But, that said, I was flying a drone pretty extensively for five days, and since I have a Part 107 certificate I wasn’t trying to “hide” while flying...I was out in the wide open, and was fine if I had been asked by police about my operations...anyways, in those five days I never once had a police officer stop me to ask about my operations.
@bruzzofilms68345 жыл бұрын
@@BlueMantleFilms Thank you very much for the answer matt! I understand perfectly, what I will do then is just register my drone in the FAA and fly it in remote places, such as from the port, or some park that has no prohibition, do not shoot people, nor close to buildings, if some police says something, I will show you that I am a tourist and that I have the drone record and I will retire quickly hahaha since having the permit 107 will be very difficult for me as a tourist!! Did you have to have ur part 107 to do this? This vid is sick!
@BlueMantleFilms4 жыл бұрын
I did and do, yes. You may know this, since you're asking about Part 107: Chicago has a drone ordinance prohibiting drone use in most parts of the city, but they have a carve-out for federally-allowed drone flights, which many interpret as people who are Part 107-certificated. So while filming this I was ready to defend that position if I had been stopped by police. But no one ever stopped me, so it was smooth sailing.

Sweeeeeeet! Do you by chance recommend any good LUTS for editing in post production? I just got the Mavic Pro 2 & I'm excited to see how the video looks! I'm trying to find some great LUTS for the drone footage. 😀
@BlueMantleFilms5 жыл бұрын
For realtime footage I use at least one LUT as a corrective LUT (I shoot in D-Log, so it's necessary to bring the saturation and contrast back into the image) and after using the LUT I then do fine adjustments to try to get the colors looking as natural as possible. Then I sometimes add another LUT over that for stylization and/or a creative look. For this video I used the Leeming LUT Pro for the corrective LUT. That one costs $15 I think. On my Miami video I used the DJI corrective LUT (I think it's called D-Log to Rec709, and it's available for free on the DJI website). Then for a creative LUT on this video I used Fuji 125 Kodak 2395 (it's a LUT that's included with Premiere Pro CC)...that's what gives it that faded (and I think cinematic) look. On my Miami video I wanted a more contrasty look, so I didn't actually add a creative LUT after the corrective LUT, instead I just adjusted clips that I felt could use a little extra contrast.

Was this done a with a neutral density filter? I'm not crazy about the washed-out look. I prefer your Miami by Drone, by comparison. Much more vibrant.
@BlueMantleFilms5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I was a bit torn about the color grading on this, but since it was autumn (and even snowed a bit) while I was there, I thought it could use a more muted color palette. Generally speaking for drone videos I like the more vibrant/contrasty look, but for this one, with what it is, I'm happy about the look. In answer to your question: I did use ND filters, yes. For the real-time footage it was usually ND8 or ND16, and for the daytime hyperlapses it was an ND64 usually. I think for one or two of them I used an ND128.
@StereoSpace5 жыл бұрын
@@BlueMantleFilms It's still nice, and it's your art. My preference usually tends to the natural beauty of light and color though, and the more the better. @BlueMantleFilms4 жыл бұрын
At the time that I filmed this --not sure if anything has changed-- there was a no-drone ordinance for the city of Chicago, yes, but the ordinance had a carve-out for federally-allowed (I don't remember the exact wording) drone flights. My understanding of that is that as a Part 107 remote pilot, the drone flights I was conducting were federally-allowed, so these were legal drone operations.

Most of the hyperlapses are with waypoints right? If so how do you plan these movements... Well done man! I've watched your older videos, your drone piloting skills are superior!
@BlueMantleFilms5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The settings were 4K HQ, h.265, D-Log, +1, 0, 0. Then the footage needed to be processed in post to remove barrel distortion, and I used the Leeming LUT Pro to get the color and contrast back into the footage. Hyperlapses: if they have a camera tilt it was most likely Waypoint mode, or if the shots generally just move side-to-side and track a subject it was CourseLock.
@AleksandarKostovFilms5 жыл бұрын
I was wondering about the side-to-side shots - like the first one. Saw that in your tutorial video but I dont understand how does the course lock make such a movement. Its something like a circle but.. not so :D I though course lock was for forward shots?
@BlueMantleFilms5 жыл бұрын
@@AleksandarKostovFilms CourseLock separates the direction the drone is traveling and the direction the drone is aiming. So you set your direction to whichever direction you'd like the drone to travel, then you select what you want the drone to point at, and it will turn the drone (and tilt the camera) to face that subject even while the drone is continuing in the same direction that you set it to travel.
