I like how you tell beginners about the overlock stitch. That's very helpful for beginners who don't have a serger. Great Job!

This was really great, but I did not expect anything less. The information you provided was very helpful and I will save for hopefully the near future when I get a sewing machine. I cannot wait to see what you have on how to finish and keep the knit seam from unraveling when done by hand. I think I know one of the stitches but want to make sure on the process and to see what other options other than chemical. Thanks for sharing and blessing to you and all in the days to come.

thank you so much, it's the best beginner video I've watched and exactly what I was looking for! All the other "beginner" videos are like "thread the needle, saw these 2 pieces together and overlock them" without explaining what any of this means 😅 You are a legend!

These have been so helpful!!!! Can you do a video covering the different feet please? I'd love to try some new fabrics but am nervous to change out the foot 😂 I know that the walking foot is really good for some fabrics that are weird to sew like mink or towel fabric. Would love to learn more. Can't wait till your next video!

Thank you for sharing. What is your opinion on two different attachments, the walking foot and side cutter. How do I tell if I have a straight or slant shank machine and the high or low?

I learnt to sew on a 1970s sewing machine in the days before sergers. Ive only ever used a plain zig zag stitch to finish the raw edges. Is the 2nd straight seam just for the visuals or does it have some structural purpose?
@jayjumperok845 ай бұрын
Excellent video, my question would be how close to edge do you do overlock stitch and how do you avoid moving around or going off the edge of the material? Just practice?
@BlueprintDIY5 ай бұрын
You want the edge to go right over the edge of the fabric and yes it take practice. Just go slow and watch where the fabric is in relation to the presser foot.

Brother Strong and Tough. I don’t like having to take off the free arm piece to change the bobbin every single time on the Janome.

My experience is that I can't find any stitch that prevents fraying. The zig zag, overlock and double overlock all still expose the edge of the fabric and cause fraying. Zig zag is difficult because if you don't sew exactly at the right edge the fabric, it causes issues including getting eaten by the feed dogI. At 8:05 in your video, showing the zig zag stitch, your edges are still very frayed, like mine. So it seems that its not really possible to entirely cover the fraying edge and even with zig zag your going to have some happening? Am I missing something here? Tried pinking shears, which made fraying worse. The only way I've found to manage the fraying is to turn the seam in/or double fold, which in some cases, just causes unwanted bulk, need for ironing, manual mider corners, more work, time, etc.... I also tried rolled hemmer feet but realized I got too narrow of feet for my fabric and need the wide hemmer feet to manage the fabric weight I'm upcycling. Still even wide hemmer feet takes a lot of extra time to deal with raw edges. You can't roll hem the corners, so you have to stop and start , slowing down the process. I have a new Brother xr9550 and am a new sewist, scratching my head on this challenge to have a secure, non fraying edge without turning the fabric edge. So many online sewists feel pinking shears are the holy grail, so I was pretty confused and surprised when my experience just left a worse frayed edge. My project is trying to make small napkins and handkerchiefs. I need a functional, most efficient method to accomplish this edging goal without losing my patience, pulling out all my hair or being discouraged.. I cut up a duvet from king to make 2 twins and noticed the inside overlock stitching wrapped around the fabric edge in a different way than my machine stitches do, maybe a commercial level overlock and seems thicker thread than my 100% cotton. I also learned about walking feet, so seems I should have one of those, as the Brother surprisingly chokes up trying to go over what I thought would/should be simple thickness corner stitches. Sewing seems to have as many complicated variables as gardening! Maybe by the time I'm 90 I'll have grown a few carrots and sewn a few napkins! ha ha...Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated...Love your enthusiasm and watching your skills manifest such creativity and ease. You help fuel my inspired, often discouraged sewing goals...Thanks kindly : )

The objective with these stitches is not to stop fraying so much as it’s to keep it from fraying so much that it makes the seam fail. There are different techniques for beautiful inside seams like sergers, seam binding, and French seams. You can also add Fray Check, but that can make it stiff.
