Excellent quest for search and realization of the real self. The real self has already been discovered as atman consisting of mind, intellect and ego. The three accepts have to be transcended to realize the true self or true atman. Don't go into wrong questions like destroying the mind. Without mind you cannot start this journey. The 3 layers have to be pealed and so called transcended to see ur true self. AT that juncture when you come face to face with the true self, you have to loose the mirror of self to realize it. AT that point you would feel the unity of nature and ur self. Flowers and either flowing out of ur heart and connecting to every being in this universe. Lot more research/concentration/contemplation/a true guru is needed.

I believe getting rid of ego is dangerous. Ego is there for a purpose. Being enlightened is just a way of looking at life in a different way. Paradise and bliss in the afterlife are extension of our ego and earthly desires.

Yes I think I know what you are alluding to. The ego is an incidental attribute of human life, as you say it wouldn't be here if it was supposed to be killed. Rather Vedanta tells us that we should educate our ego's, because no matter how pure and spiritual one's mind can become, the ego always re-constitutes itself like an atrophied limb. And this applies to everyone even the purest of sages contrary to the in-vogue notions of people like Ramana Maharshi. If he was ego-less as most of his devotees claim, then who or what read the daily papers cooked in the ashram kitchen and decided to go for his daily walks?

„We“ don‘t exist. There‘s only one consciousness. The „mind“ is a help-construction that makes our body function in this world. There is is no creator either. I recommend the wonderful books of Ramesh Balsekar (former devotee of Nisargadatta Maharaj).

Interesting - ego just hangs in there whether we are in Ashram or Wall Street. Eckhart Tolle said something like, " we are not objects in space but really the space in which objects (or thoughts) happen." I hope one day the ego will just let go its grip and allow me to be the space. Seems most of us need many years of daily spiritual practice and then also a sudden release for it be a permanent state.

The ego will not let go its grip and it won‘t allow you anything. It‘s vice versa: It is your inner self that must see through and resolve the ego.

it is the thought that dictates one's own life.we cannot know anything other than what is already in our experience, which is stored up as thought in our memory.the problem with us is, we are trying to become something, other than what we really are.for want of courage to lead one's own life in all its unpredictable ways, we need crutches, a support system, an insurance to hang on to, in case should things get out of hands, in the form of religion, a belief system & teachings of innumerable spiritual Masters.why, because we have no courage & conviction to face events as it unfolds in one's life.permanent happiness is a myth & in pursuit of that elusive happiness, we are ruining our present.taking life in all its vagaries, rising & falling, suffering & enjoying with equanimity, & constantly reminding one's self of the fact that we are neither body nor the mind, but only a witness to all that goes on,which goes by the name of Self, Atman, God,the ultimate reality, the substratum of all things, real & unreal & so on, is the only way out.if we sit in silence & reflect, we are bound to come to terms with the ephemeral & transcient nature of life.
