This song has two meanings: 1. The Narrator is dead, with his soul singing for the grave digger to give his body a proper burial. 2. The Narrator is a deadringer. Back in the day, people who were assumed dead were buried, but a bell was put above their graves with a string drawn down to the grave. The graveyard shift worker would then dig the body up if the bell rang. The Narrator is pleading the grave digger to save his life from being buried alive. Presumably he was faking his death.
