The New York Rangers acquired forward Vladimir Tarasenko from the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.
In return, the Blues are reportedly receiving winger Sammy Blais a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, and Hunter Skinner. Defenceman Niko Mikkola is going with Tarasenko to the Rangers.
The 31-year-old is in the final year of his eight-year contract that comes with a $7.5-million cap hit. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports that the Blues will retain 50 per cent of Tarasenko's salary.
The conditions for the first-round draft pick going to St. Louis are that they will receive the later of the two Rangers' first-round picks (they also own the Dallas Stars' pick). If the Stars finish with the top-10 pick it will shift to the 2024 NHL Draft.
The 2024 fourth-round will become a third-rounder if the Rangers qualify for the playoffs.
In 38 games this season, Tarasenko has 10 goals and 19 assists for 29 points.
Joining the Blues as the club’s 16th-overall pick back in 2010, Tarasenko has been a key cog in St. Louis’s offensive machine for the past decade, putting up a career-best 40 goals in 2016, nearly reaching that mark on two other occasions, and topping 30 goals six times in total. He played a central role in the Blues’ run to the Stanley Cup in 2019, leading the team in scoring as it made its unexpected climb up the standings in the latter half of the season.
In 2021, Tarasenko requested a trade out of St. Louis. According to longtime Blues beat writer Rutherford, the request stemmed from the winger’s frustration with how his shoulder surgeries were managed by the Blues’ team doctors.
Despite the request, and his availability for the 2021 expansion draft, Tarasenko remained with the club and put up a career-best offensive showing in 2021-22, scoring 34 goals and 82 points in 75 games.

Excellent move for both teams. Rangers get a star winger and defensive depth. It'll be touch to keep him, given the cap, but not impossible - yet that isn't what matters right now. Meanwhile, STL gets a first rounder, which they need for a rebuild. Win-Win.

This is a rare trade where both win. St. Louis Needs very badly to rebuild. They need to unload assets and amass first round picks. Tarasenko was going to leave them at the end of the year. They instead turned a total loss into a first rounder, a third rounder (the rangers are going to make the playoffs), and this B guy who may or may not be a player. The Rangers get to make their case to Tarasenko that NY is where he needs to be long term. They get to see what he has left to offer a playoff team and it didn't cost them a whole lot. Its a win all the way around.

i see a lot of "rangers fleece" but honestly this is the definition of a rental. it's a good risk for the rangers who need a scoring winger with experience and a playoff performer with bread and mika. solid 6-7D in niko and also replaces some of the blais size we lost. the blues however do get a first in a likely stacked draft, the younger player in blais who could still become a very solid bottom 6 player. big physical and has showcased skill. skinner isn't the rangers best prospect but he still has potential.

Rangers fan here - I love this trade, absolutely was not even thinking about it and this decision by Drury is awesome I love it. BUT, patty kane would have filled the job I think that they're really looking for much better. I know he's controversial and many don't want him, but on the face value of trying to win a cup, I do NOT think this pace the rangers had last season and this season, and maybe next season, so splurging on patty kane may have been the better option.

Tarasenko for pennies of the dollar is a much wiser move than giving up real pieces for Kane who's got a busted hip or Timo Meier who would cost too much and difficult to retain on a new contract...and Mikkola taking Harpur's spot is a bummer for Harpur since he's been steady, but a stay-at-home defender to pair with Schneider...this is tidy business by Drury.

What are the rangers going to do with the picks? Odds are the picks are late in the rounds that the players won't turn into much and if they do it won't be for a while. I guess it depends on how badly the Pens wanna make the playoffs. There are other ways to remedy things like no salary cap. Kind of missing some of this entire deal. The 4th becomes a 3rd if the rangers make the playoffs which they more than likely are. Blais use to play for the Blues and was on the cup winning team, he adds grit that they really need. But the Blues can still resign Tarensenko at the end of the season, he was unhappy for a time but money has a way of changing that and he does have a family and life in STL. The only way this becomes a win for the rangers is if they win the Cup or resign Tarensenko and he performs well. If neither of those happens it's a loss for them.

Rangers still have a first round pick , gave up no prospects, got a top 6 winger we needed who already has good chemistry with panarin, a 6d we needed, and dumped off Sammy blais who was doing absolutely nothing for them and a 3rd round pick is basically worthless. Rangers already have a ton of young talent they’re struggling with getting developed it’s not like they’re going to be crying over 1 of their two picks. Absolutely a win for the rangers as it has little to no negative impact on the future of the team past this season.

@@appealtoreason7584 It doesn't matter t hat they already have a first round pick, this draft is very deep and having two allows you to move up. However if the rangers don't resign Tarensenko or win the cup they get fleeced, because the Blues can still sign him if they really wanted to. Losing Tarensenko doesn't do anything for the Blues it effects them in now way and to say a 3rd round pick isn't anything isn't true at all. Most of the nhl is made of of players from the first 3 rounds. But what it also does is give you more trade ammo. If NY loses in the first round of the playoffs and don't resign Tarensenko do they still win the trade? Absolutely not.

@@brianlb78 The Rangers cup window is open. We have our core established with Igor, Fox, Panarin, Kreider Mika and trocheck. We also have plenty of young talent to build our future or use as trade bait with Kappo Laffy Chytil K’Andre Kratsov. Plus a lot of great young prospects like Othman. Like I said we are already getting a first rounder this draft. But we don’t really need any more young talent What we need is to take advantage of an opportunity now. Our future is pretty good and locked. Sacrificing one meaningful pick for a top 6 winger as a rental the team desperately needs while offloading Sammy Blais is a smart move. And if we lose in the playoffs, and we are definitely not resigning tarasenko all we’re out is 1 first round pick. If it was the rangers only first then yes absolutely would be meaningless if we didn’t win the cup.

On paper this sounds like a great trade. Rangers didn't lose anyone important to their future or right now. Blues get a first, although it could be a late first. My only question is, how likely is it that Rangers will be able to re-sign him and what would be the cost?
