This song and other songs with a catchy "hook" are all typically based on the same song - Pachelbel's Canon in D. The songs lyrics are making fun of bands who write songs that all sound the same while purposely using music that sounds the same. LOL There's actually a wiki page about this song.

Hey Jamel with the recent death of Jim Steinman could you please react to his masterpiece..... Meatloaf - For crying out loud..... Or even better the whole bat out of hell album? (Just don't listen to Dead Ringer for love as it wasn't actually on the original album, it was added many years later). The best way to look at bat out of hell as an album is that the first song (bat out of hell) is someone dying, the other songs are his life flashing before his eyes.....

This song is genius. Basically he’s telling you that he is manipulating you into liking the song and you can’t help yourself because of the hook.
@Ssgtremy3 жыл бұрын
Its more genius than that actually, the entire song is actually a cover of Pachelbel's Canon (in D major) carefully hidden. and depending on the lyric set (verse 1 to 2, etc) the song lays other ways in which this scenario plays (2nd verse is about politics for example).
@ItsHammer3 жыл бұрын
It’s both genius and fucked. In what is a scathing takedown of the pop music industry and having to make the choice between success and personal integrity they created a pop music masterpiece that is still one of their biggest hits of all time.

@@Ssgtremy Wow. I never noticed that it has the same melody as Pachelbel's Canon, and I used to know how to play some of it on the piano, but after reading your comment, I could hear it in my head. Growing up I always thought he was saying “the heart brings you back”. I thought he was saying that no matter how jaded you might become, that you once had a good pure heart, and that’s where you can be again. I would hush people as they corrected me at karaoke. I eventually got it. But I still sing it my way, lol.
@wesplybon95103 жыл бұрын
One of the BIG hooks in this song is the chord progression itself. Not that this song is unique in this fact, but it was deliberate, and part of the message of the song, to make the chord progression the same as Cannon in D by Pachabel. The rest of the song is rote, canned pop riffs and progression and the lyrics satirically suggest that hooks, beats and riffs are all that matter. All in all, it's a commentary on how pop music is derivative and manufactured. This song made it to the top 10 and thusly validated it's careful and deliberate construction. The only thing truly unique about this song is Popper's harmonica solo. And perhaps that was also deliberate... maybe a way of him telling us he knows he's better than these tricks. That man is legend!
@spyseefan9753 жыл бұрын

The hook in "Hook" is actually a reworked version of the main melody from a nearly 400 year old Baroque composition called Pachelbel's Canon. They used it because they wanted to prove that a hook is a hook, period, no matter when it's from.

Lol there’s no “opinion” about it. XD This song is absolutely an indictment of the music industry, and Popper has confirmed that many many times. You read it completely the way he wanted you to. Another thing I like about them is that I've seen them on big tours to small local cook-out type concerts, and they've ALWAYS put in effort. This show was the Bridge School Benefit, where most artists came in and stripped down to acoutist-only performances. You get some really great and unique performances from these shows, and often from some extremely popular artists of the time. Within the music community, these were some of the shows performers loved most. A good cause mixed with a chance to publicly explore new formats for their tunes, etc. Because many of these shows were a Who's Who of musicians, many a musical friendship was started here.

I got to see them in concert once, front row. I almost caught a harmonica. It bounced off my palm and I couldn't close my hand fast enough. Dude almost took my knees out diving for it. I did get a guitar pick handed to me though, which was awesome!

I have a drinking songs Playlist for the rare Saturdays that I get a bottle and throw all my cares away for the day. This song is on there more than once. Absolutely great!

I like the episode that they appeared on, on the show Roseanne. This song is a jam.
