Such a great one. The song is literally about writing a song about nothing but singing with inflection with a good hook. And John Popper is the greatest harmonica player in the World.

When John Popper was a kid in Lawrenceville, NJ, before his voice changed into the remarkable instrument it became, he used to come to me in Princeton for trumpet lessons. He NEVER had a lesson ready on the trumpet, but ALWAYS had something new to show me on the harmonica. His enthusiasm was a joy! I remember going to the piano and showing him what a twelve-bar blues was… Musically, Hook has the same harmonic structure as the Pachelbel Canon in D. Check it out!

The best trolling song ever made. He literally tells you how the song is going to make you feel as you’re feeling it. Popper told you that you would dig deep into what the “hook” symbolized when he started the song with “It doesn't matter what I say So long as I sing with inflection That makes you feel I'll convey Some inner truth or vast reflection” The “hook” is slang for chorus. But I've said nothing so far

The most insane part of this is he does a long, blistering fast harmonica solo, and then shoots right into the fastest, most difficult lyrics. The lungs and breath control are incredible. And Popper is indeed among the elite of the elite world class harmonica players. Very few on the planet can keep up with his virtuoso ability.

Anyone hearing this for the first time should read the lyrics first, think about them, figure out what they mean, and then relish the song itself while appreciating the irony. If you don’t figure out the meaning first, it’s so easy to miss it because the tune, the production, the harmonica and the vocal are all so blisteringly good. This song never ages.

John Popper was the vocalist and harmonica virtuoso on this tune. Both his harp-playing and rapid-fire lyrical work on this song are pretty amazing. If you're a big fan of harmonica, check out an album released in the 90's called "The Glory of Gershwin" which features duets of George Gershwin tunes by harmonica virtuoso Larry Adler and numerous rock and pop artists of that time.
@johnlane1206
@johnlane1206 Жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more, Larry Adler was one of the best harmonica players ever. It's worth noting that he played a chromatic harmonica so his sound is a little different than what most people expect when they think harmonica.
@DSanto-bk6oq
@DSanto-bk6oq Жыл бұрын
@@johnlane1206 My late brother was a musical savant...his main instrument was piano, but he was one of those guys who could pick up almost any instrument and in a little while he would be noodling away. He bought a chromatic harmonica and could do some pretty amazing things with it. Me...I feel lucky to be able to pick guitar a little. But whatever instrument you try to play or whatever level you achieve on any instrument, it definitely helps you appreciate music more, doesn't it?

Never ceases to blow my mind how Popper was able to parallel the "hook" of a song bringing you back for another listen to Peter Pan refusing to grow up so he could deal with Capt. Hook. "No matter how much Peter loved her, what made the Pan refuse to grow... was that the Hook brings you back..." What?! Brilliant.

Theres a scene in my favorite novel, "The Name of the Wind", wherein the main protagonist plays his lute in a half hazardly, easy way for the most technical song to impress the real musicians. Then plays the easiest song as if its the hardest ever and the crowd gets really into it just to make the real musicians laugh.

I think you are exactly right. You have no idea what the meaning of this song is to us but the hook brings you back. Harp is outstanding in this song, should try Whammer Jammer by J. Geils band. But he is also dumping on the music industry and how superficial and shallow they are. In their song Run Around he tells how since he was a large man, he doesn't fit the music industries narrative of what a star looks like so in video they have a fake Milli-Vanilli type band in front while John Popper sings behind the curtain. Love the lyrics in Hook, vocals, and of course, harmonica
