Hey Jamel with the recent death of Jim Steinman could you please react to his masterpiece..... Meatloaf - For crying out loud..... Or even better the whole bat out of hell album? (Just don't listen to Dead Ringer for love as it wasn't actually on the original album, it was added many years later). The best way to look at bat out of hell as an album is that the first song (bat out of hell) is someone dying, the other songs are his life flashing before his eyes.....

apparently i was confused hook was not the video with the OZ theme ...which one was it? there were clips from that video in this one and i think they had two that had some sort of Oz references in them ...well they are all good and yeah this album was out at the height of MTVs influence and Blues Traveler was pretty huge and had star level access in Hollywood at that time.

Actually, it's so much more than that. It's a criticism of the music industry and how they use the same stuff over and over again to constantly create successful songs, like Pachelbel's Canon in D. In fact, John Popper intentionally used Pachelbel's Canon in D in Hook to prove his point. The video below really goes in depth and explains just how great "Hook" is. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3XbZa2fp82JY9k&ab_channel=AlfoMedia

The song is about how audiences don’t pay attention to the lyrics, and that the audience doesn’t care about meaning or depth, as long as a song is catchy and has a good hook, people will buy it. He’s criticizing the listeners through the whole song, and saying it doesn’t matter cuz they’re not paying attention to what he is saying and will like the song cuz of the catchy hook. He was proven right, when this song became a top ten song!

I have always interpreted this song as him saying as long as a song has a catchy little hook it'll be a big hit and it doesn't matter if it says anything of any significance at all. Kind of a shot at the music industry and also at music consumers. There's a song by a band called Sweet Vine titled Candy For Fools based on the same concept.

I don't think they're the greatest ever, but they were absolutely central to the emergence of the scene in the early/mid '90s with the H.O.R.D.E. tour that they organized and curated for 3 or 4 years. Different iterations of the tour included bands like Phish, Widespread Panic, Col. Bruce and ARU, and the Dave Matthews Band. My first real jamband experience was the '94 tour which, after a full day of acts headlined by Blues Traveler, ended with a full 2 set Allman Brothers Band set - I've been hooked ever since!

The fact that these guys wrote a song about how you can manipulate people into thinking your music is deep and profound just by singing in a certain way and people will eat it up, while constantly pointing out their insincerity and lack of substance in the lyrics, and the song still became a massive smash hit despite the lyrics’ constant mocking of the song’s audience…These guys were true masters of their craft.

"Dropping Some NYC", "Gina", "Support Your Local Emperor" & "Mountains Win Again" which you may recognize from Busch beer ads, are all great. The first 4 albums are absolutely excellent.

These guys rock. The entire band is on point at all times. No one...and I mean...no one...can play harmonica like John does. No comparison. This band has no peers.

Another great one by them. I remember them being popular around the mid 90s. The guy always makes me want to play the harmonica LOL

Funny story. My uncle thinks he can play harmonica but his "ear" is off key. One night I let him sit in with my Rock/Metal band as we were doing some bluesy material. I kept telling the band and my uncle to "hold an E" or "hold a D" than I would go over and slide my uncle's hands and harmonica over until it was on the right note. Lol. Then he would nod, smile and keep playing off key. Both of our guitarists were shaking their heads and giving him the eye-daggers. Needless to say, they didn't want him rehearsing with us anymore. The next time my uncle came over to listen to us rehearse, one guitarist, Khan, said to him "you didn't bring your harmonica, did you!?" and when my uncle said no, Khan said "Good. That means you can stay"...

Hey! There's Paul Shaffer. I saw him when he was the keyboardist for the Blues Brothers when he still had hair. It was at the concert where the Grateful Dead played the last show at Winterland.

Blues traveler had been touring since the late eighties, and had been on the Letterman show a couple times until They broke out and had fame with this album and another to follow. This was around 1993 -1996, they were up against Nirvana, Peal Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Nine inch nails, and Smashing Pumpkins.

The guy watching TV in the video is Ken Ober. He's best known for the MTV game show "Remote Control". Folks like Dennis Leary, Adam Sandler, and Colin Quinn got popularized on that show.

I could list Blues traveler songs for you all day long, I saw this band constantly in concert because they had this jam style I never saw with anyone else. they would start playing one song and go into 3 or four others stringing htem all along and then wrapping it all up before finishing the last one, and it all just flowed. they never stopped and during it some band member would step off for a break while the others just kept playing. My favorite song of theirs is Battle of someone, highly reccomend that. others would be The mountains win again, Most Precarious, and Candian Rose.

The guy who is watching the TV in the video is Ken Ober. He's also in the video for Run Around (when he's rapidly changing channels you can see flashes of the video). Ken Ober hosted a pop culture trivia gameshow on MTV called "Remote Control" People like Adam Sandler, Denis Leary, and Colin Quin got some of their earlier work on Remote Control. You should find an episode and react to it. Real fun game show.

Remember TRL on MTV? "Total request live". I think Blues Traveler hit it big a few years before that with this album. The Counting Crows had just come out with Mr. Jones. So 1994 according to wikipedia that I just checked. I remember Counting Crows, Blues Traveler, and similar artists being played on the popular music radio stations when my mother would drive me to school. Needless to say, music from Blues Traveler is nostalgic for me. Also that dude that's in this video watching TV, he worked for MTV at the time and I think he's one of the people who gave them a big push.
