The Legend John Popper. World’s ultimate mouth musician. When you tilt your head straight towards the heavens as you sing & play your heart & lungs out, we are all seemlessly brought together in life again & again. A true gem of a band. Let’s see some lame group of wannabes try to cover these guys w any semblance of likeness, skill, sound or soul. We dare you!! This is true Love at its finest🤟❤️🍷

Blues Traveler needs a lot more credit about keeping the jam band scene alive during he 90s. They help PHISH became what they are now and DMB also.

I literally just now, like 2 minutes ago, turned to my husband and said (after playing the first 3ish minutes) "omg i finally understand phish fans now" he laughed and asked for specifics, I said because I don't give one shit about a dude dicking around on guitar for 25 minutes as a nonsense transition to a song... But I could listen to John find his groove via harmonica whilst transitioning to a song for fucking ever! Holy shit man, light bulb epiphany moment. I feel I must apologize for any past judgment I passed on literally every stoner I knew in college. I get it now.

I saw the "thinnest of air" dvd a few years ago and, I don't know why, I thought they'd sort of abandoned being a "jam band". Seeing this tonight: they're evidently still the slightly shambolic, belly-full-of-blues, jam band they used to be. Popper's vocals are always very raw live.

Just caught these guys in MI and they still rock out. JP is still the best harmonica player of all time and a powerful singer. The band is a monster. They did a jam with guys from Moe on the Rolling Stones Can't You Hear Me Knocking and it was nuts

at my show john left the stage at least three times to get off his feet. They had a chair side stage for him to sit and rest on. The band would jam on. I was surprised to see him on his feet the whole time here. Granted in MI it was a Tuesday and the place was not full. so he probably didn't feel like blowing his entire load that show. And throwing out his back or hip or whatever

@Flower Garden haha last time I did them I made an ass out of myself. Well the last time I did them I took less than usual but enough to have the giggles, no fear whatever and some slight shapes and movements but after the prayer in front of hundreds of people I clapped after. Everyone was looking at me and then we're all laughing. I then took all the plates on the dinner table at the place and was handing em out to everyone. Looking back at it now it was freaking hilarious.

They always let their guests do their thing they never smother their guests. And the jams end up being awesome they are so unselfish they know when to take the lead and then step back for someone else. Especially with guests. Like when they did Gloria with Merl Saunders all time classic

It still good cause its different. they are musicians of a fine order. the ramble like the dead. The music is natually a jam flow. So they fit into a festival. Crowds are certainly not what they once were and his voice has faded from the power of the early days. But overall a good show to go and find.. Its like a lot of things. A unique hook like the harmonica can get played out quickly

How is it that he gets the solo parts of But Anyway right, but always just randomly does stuff that 'sort of' sounds similar during the Hook solo? Kind of gets on my nerves. He's a great musician. In an interview years ago, when asked to play the Hook solo, he said he "forgot the chord progression" or something like that. How does one forget that? Any musician who is moderately good can re-learn such a progression within sometimes just minutes and get used to it, so I always wondered why he strayed away from the original solo.
@jazzguitartalk
@jazzguitartalk Жыл бұрын
That’s what improvised music is. He’s in great form in this. Makes all the changes. Not to mention playing hook maybe 50% faster than the record. I’d agree kinda baffling if he really said he forgot the changes to Hook. Most musicians would be able to play it by ear. Somehow i doubt that would be any sort of a challenge for j p.

I usually have a lot of mercy for people, but if this sound technician does not understand that the people need more BASS, then what is he thinking?
@mrbetelgeuse
@mrbetelgeuse 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah but you gotta know your audience, folksy music is not really so much about the bass except to keep a steady rhythmic beat and count. The harmonica, banjo, mandolin, and fiddles are very much melodic instruments often representating the "voice" of the song. I mean I get what you're saying, the mixing is not exactly album level production, but it does at least run the median for playback when it comes to not covering up the star and soul of the overall sound.
