@@funcionyforma my SMSL and this 2i are about the same. With a slight improvement on the SMSL. Very slight. Bit more authority and separation. But, very slight and depending on the music. Overall, the 2i is great. Dead simple and "just works" as it should. If they had to make an improvement it would be to give you some filter options for the DAC.

I have this node2i for a year now, but now recently upgraded my main system (new amp + speakers + sub), and my Hegel H95 amp is now my DAC. Overall I love this node2i. The streaming implementation is very good, and I use Tidal Connect, to be able to stay in the Tidal app and get the best User Experience from that side. Over coax it goes to the Hegel built-in dac which sounds good to my ears on my Kef LS50 meta's + Kef KC62 sub :-)

Excellent, concise, fair assessment of the Node 2i. I own three of them (each connected to an external DAC) and an NAD C658 preamp with BluOS. Needless to say, I'm a fan. It's the only platform I know of that natively supports both Qobuz and Idagio, the two classical music streaming services I subscribe to. BluOS was also able to index my 500+ gb NAS-resident FLAC music library and make it available from any system in the house.

I am so impressed with my Node 2i that I started ripping my CDs onto a USB drive and listen to them on the 2i. I do find the DAC in the 2i a little weak when compare to the rest of my setup that consists of Mac amp and pre, Cary 200tsDAC, Sonus Faber Sonetto 3 and Nordost Red Dawn power, interconnect and speaker cables. My biggest gripe was that $2 power cord that came with the 2l. And it doesn’t even come with proper HiFi receptor that allows me to use a half decent power cord. So I cut off the connector that goes to the 2l and soldered it to a Nordost Red Dawn. Wow. What an improvement, especially with music ripped from CDs. Bigger sound stage, more details, articulate bass. Mind you, the Red Dawn casts as much as the 2l. Lol. But we’ll worth the money. Suggestion to BLUESOUND...sell an adapter that allow people to use a proper HiFi power cord.

Hi there, thanks for your feedback, I enjoyed reading it. Totally agree, the Node 2i is good, but definitely get's a lot better with a power cord upgrade and an external DAC. There are adapters available online to solve the connection problem, they are called 'C13 to C7' or 'C14 to C7'. I use one of those on my SVS Subwoofer. Have a great weekend and best regards, Yuri.

@YuriBrus
@YuriBrus 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Steven, thank you very much for your feedback and question. No, sorry I have not tried Roon with the Node 2i, but my understanding is that the Node 2i is a Roon ready device, so I expect it to work well in that configuration. As for your question about the price range for a suitable DAC. My recommendation is, that if you are happy with your current setup, then don’t buy a new DAC just to upgrade the sound of the Node 2i. However, if you already have a DAC in your system or you have the possibility to borrow one from a friend or a friendly dealer, then yeah, definitely give it a try. An alternative boost in performance could be upgrading the power cord and/or signal cables. But don’t worry too much about having to buy a new DAC. At the time I had it hooked up to a pretty pricey Luxman, which is a total overkill. By the way, my favorite budget DAC is the regular Schiit Modi 3 (I have not yet heard the newer 3+). Anyway, best regards and a happy new year, Yuri.
@stevenwaldstein2249
@stevenwaldstein2249 3 жыл бұрын
@@YuriBrus My understanding is the Modi 3+ only changes the USB protocol section to make it match their other DACs. I’m considering getting the 2i and may or may not use it with Roon. For one system I can toslink connect it to my Emotiva UMC-200 that has its own DAC. My other system does not have its own DACs so I will try it first relying on the BN 2i’s DACs. Thanks for your help.

Hello Bogdan. Thank you for your feedback and interesting question. Question: If I connect the Blue Node directly to my router with an ethernet cable, can I stream to my stereo system via an Apple Play 2 device or a Bluetooth receiver? Would the sound be degraded compared to wiring the Blue Node directly to the stereo as opposed to the Apple TV 4K or a quality Bluetooth receiver? I'm wondering because I would like to stream the Blue Node to two separate stereos in my house. But if the sound quality would degrade too much over Apple Play 2 or BT, then I'll have to rethink this strategy. Thanks in advance for your help and for all the wonderful information here.

Hello Ipensword, thank you for your question. You can stream music wirelessly to the Node via Bluetooth or Airplay, but you have to see the Node 2i more as endpoint, connected directly to your main stereo system. Hi Fredrik, thanks for your question. I personally never experienced any problems using an attached hdd. The only downside is, that the library has to be reindexed if you turn the Node completely off. Ir does not have to be a drive with it's own power supply, in my case that option just sounded slightly better. The drive I used was formatted in fat32. I'm looking for a gift for my dad to replace his squeezebox streamer and he has the same set up as me (NAS +Plex). I was looking at the Cambridge CXN v2 for him, but the source options are very limited. (he also streams from some network radio stations). I know he uses Pandora, but neither of these will support it so I suspect a move to Spotify. The NAD C 658 is another option and will allow him to connect a turntable, but it is more money than I want to spend. Would appreciate your thoughts.

There are no silly questions, it's silly not to ask. Bluetooth can sound very good. AptX HD, for example, supports sampling rates of 48 kHz and sample resolutions up to 24 bits. However, the transmission is still lossy. If you are going to hear a big difference in sound quality, will also depend on the rest of the chain. In my experience, wired usually sounds better.

Hi Ab, thank you very much for your feedback. The drive I use in the video is a 2TB WD Black, that I put in an old WD enclosure and power with the original wall wart. I have also tried a 'WD My Passport' but to my ears the WD Black sounds slightly better, could be my imagination, though. Coaxial cables supposedly sound better than optical ones, but can be sensitive to electrical noise. If you have the opportunity to borrow one, from maybe a friend, it's definitely worth a try.

Hello and thank you for your question. I have wired connections at both my listening points and in my experience it's usually the most stable option, can't really say if it will make a difference in sound quality, I guess it also depends on the rest of the chain (Amp/Speakers). For me, the Node 2i sounds best when I play music from an attached storage device, if you do that, it doesn't matter any more how you connect the Node 2i to your network. In your case, you could maybe borrow a long patch cable and see if the sound really improves, always worth a try if you have the time. Best regards, Yuri

I'm happy w/ the sound quality....using the coax out to a Schiit Modi 3 DAC. But i'm quite disappointed in the BluOS app. Sometimes it freezes up, or won't save favorites etc. But mostly I'm disappointed in the limited options for organizing and viewing your music. (I use it to navigate Tidal as well as a library of music files on my computer.) It would be be very helpful, for example, if you could view the music in your playlists by "album view". That would make it much better for using playlists as one of the key ways for organizing different categories and genres of music. If you have playslists for "electronic" or "folk" and each one has hundreds of tracks just in one long list, you can't easily see what's in there. An album view within playlists, like itunes has, would be much better. It would also be helpful if you could search your collection / favorited albums in tidal by genre (This is much different from searching Tidal's entire catalogue by genre and getting their suggestions. I'm thinking of switching to Roon.

For me I have the same problems with saving favorites. But I found out that if instead of clicking the favorite button, if you click the 3 dots instead and then click favorite from the menu there, this will save it correctly. I know it's annoying but it's a nice workaround and doesnt take much longer to do it this way. Just click the 3 dots and then click favorite.

@YuriBrus
@YuriBrus 4 жыл бұрын
Hi James, Yes it does MQA and HiRes, many streamers can do that nowadays. To really benefit from the sound quality of these formats, it's important how these digital files are converted into analog and the BlueSound does a pretty good job on it's own, but also gives you the option to let an external DAC do this. Depending on the quality of the external DAC, this might improve the sound quality even further. Best regards, Yuri

MQA is a bit of a joke. ONLY Tidal supports MQA, and other services, like Qobuz or Amazon's "HD" service provide high res without the need for a specific (licensed) DAC. The other services I mentioned also have a larger catalog than Tidal, both in CD quality and ESPECIALLY in high res. The OVERWHELMING majority of music you listen to is going to be 16-bit/44khz anyway. MQA is the new HDCD.

my only complain about the node 2i is the delay/lag on the analog input. if i connect something there like a turntable, there's this delay in the sound. it's the same on yours? i read somewhere that the analog inputs on the node 2i are not direct outs to the main output. the signal goes to an internal process and then to the outs.
@YuriBrus
@YuriBrus 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm pretty sure that the analog input passes the internal DAC first, since the analog input is a combined toslink input. I never use it though, since I use the Node 2i solely as playback device. But I can imagine there might be a slight delay, due to the this.

@@anmic3590 Hello Andrei Thank you for your positive feedback. It is worth a try, the B&W Zeppelin is a very nice system and the Wireworld Mini Aurora is a good cable. I am listening to Spotify and Tidal for longer but I'm a rookie in listening to digital music via my old Audiolab system which was a pretty decent sounding but certainly not a high end system even when I bought it. I must say the sound of the node 2i was a disappointment. No question, as a streamer it's great, easy to set up and connect to most of the sources one can imagine, using a Bluetooth headphone via aptX provides a great (nowadays so popular bass and treble oriented, clean) sound.. However if I'm listening to the same music via my old Audiolab CD player the quality is leagues apart. The Node 2i is flat, treble and bass non existent, the whole experience gets kinda boring when switching from CD to Node 2i (sure I've let it run for 100 hours). And no I didn't play with power supply or alternative digital sources (only internet music sources), I thought the difference is too big to make it up with small improvements. Did I miss something or were my expectations too high on listening to digital sources? Time will tell, a Denafrips Ares II is already on it's way right now, I'm keen to listen to the difference of the built in and the external DAC. I don't want to give up on digital sources as the abundance of (for me) new music it provides is worth the effort... UPDATE: After I wrote this post I thought maybe I make another session with the Bluesound, not that it turns out I am like the guy driving on the highway wondering why the radio is talking about a guy driving in the opposite direction while all of the cars drive in the wrong direction... The short story is: yes, I was the one driving in the wrong direction. The node 2i IS actually a good investment and is worth the money. What happened? I started to listen to the Node on day 4 after the purchase after leaving it on day and night (letting internet radio and long playlists play during the night). A made listening sessions and comparisons for 8-10 days almost every day. The results were as described above. Now for the last 3-4 days I only used the 2i as a background music player until I decided to give it another try. Now is day 18 and I can report the sound has improved substantially. I checked, there was no firmware upgrade in the last 3 weeks, and although I made some complete switch offs I assume the first upgrade that happened after setup didn't need a restart to take effect. So the only reason of the sound improvement can be that this device needs a considerably longer burn in than I thought... Is it better than the CD? No, but the differences are much smaller now. The 2i has a drier sound than the CD, bass guitars, drums, chellos have more meet (and a warmer fur) on the CD, drums and gongs have more punch on CD when the stick touches the instrument and my system is (too) far from punchy. Echos die fast on the node 2i it is less airy and spacious too. But the differences are subtle, the Node 2i actually does sound good and is worth the money. Keep calm and listen on... So prospective Bluesound buyers, music lovers who need a value for money allrounder, there is no conspiracy here, this tiny gear is worth the money, just be patient - unlike me - and the sound will come.

@tillaard61 3 жыл бұрын
@YuriBrus
@YuriBrus 3 жыл бұрын

Interesting. Here I was thinking the DAC was excellent based on others opinion. Not much point paying $1000 for this if the onboard DAC is not up to the task.

Hi AUSSIE, the internal DAC of the NODE 2i is good and you would have to hook it up to an external DAC costing at least the same price to gain a benefit. Currently I have the successor of this model, the 2021 Bluesound NODE, it is the same price and has an upgraded DAC, which in my opinion sounds much better and really doesn't need an external DAC.

@@YuriBrus Oh ok, thanks because it would be the 2021 model that I would of considered. My present amp has a good DAC but I’m thinking of upgrading next year to the Yamaha 2200 which is analog only.

@@aussie8114 I really like the 2021 NODE a lot. Hopefully I can find the time to release a video about it in the coming week. Currently I have it connected to the analog input of my KEF LS50 WIRELESS II Set and I find that it outperforms the internal streamer of the KEFs. Here in Switzerland it costs about CHF 550,- which is about 815,- AUD.
@aussie8114
@aussie8114 2 жыл бұрын
@@YuriBrus It costs $1,000 here. We pay too much for everything. The Yamaha 2200 is $5,000. The audio specialist that I would buy the Yamaha from would also sell the Blue Node so I might be able to borrow a demo amp and blue node for a day. I think they will let me because I know the manager. I thought of getting a McIntosh amp, that has the DAC in it, and great tone control, but that’s $17,000 here which is too much to spend.

Hi Alexander, You might be experiencing network dropout due to an incompetent network connection. If the Node is not directly connected to the router with a cable you will experience more drop outs for sure. Wire sounds better anyway. Cat7 if you can get it. Remember that the Node and manny of the pieces like it are computers, and do, from time to time need to be rebooted. Good luck!
