I've had this about a year now and the best thing I can say is I forget it's there since it seamlessly shifts between Spotify, AirPlay, Bluetooth and NAS. Sounds great and easy for the rest of the family to use without getting frustrated. We spend more time listening to great music and less time fiddling with tech.

I’m still not sure what it’s for? Would this be better than Let’s say. Schiit DAC? I have a denon that I can connect to via BT. And I also have TV, that also has an NVidia shield: same thing, I can connect to either one of them. I’m guessing it’d be redundantly redundant.
@jcoffman9518

@@gustercc NBD if you don't need it. I'm not sure how the Nvidia shield works with streaming, but I find this better than using bluetooth since it doesn't have the issues with proximity or data loss. I'm using it on a vintage Tandberg receiver that they didn't think to include streaming capabilities on back in the late 70's. The DAC onboard the Node 2i is more than sufficient for that. If I had a more revealing system I'd upgrade to a separate DAC (like Schiit) but keep the excellent streaming capabilities and UI of the Node.

@@gustercc if you care about sound quality this is not redundant. I cannot speak to what Nvidias abilities are on streaming for music, but I can add to the Bluetooth. The audio played over Bluetooth is very much compressed and thus has much information deleted and lost. This equals reduced sound quality. When you stream over wifi there is also much better range snd you can keep the music playing while use your phone to search the net, play you tube or talk on the phone etc... if you subscribe to high res streaming service and only use Bluetooth then you are wasting your money on the streaming fees. If you subscribe to spotify or KZbin music and are happy 😊 that is what it is all about and don't need to upgrade to these more expensive devices and fees. Which may not bring you any more enjoyment.

This is exactly why I love this thing. It can be used without thinking about it. The DAC is fine for most and no one in our house has ever asked how to connect to it, they just do. Tweaks in the app are great for set ups that aren't optimal, like playing a lot of acoustic music to actives in a kitchen while streaming at the same time to better gear in the next room.

I bought one of these last month, I agree it’s great. I found the level of the analogue rca outputs to be too high and caused distortion, but it can be lowered and it sounds perfect now. One really great feature is it can use any remote control as the app lets you map play, pause, skip etc functions to any other remote you have.

Thanks Randy! I just picked one up a couple of weeks ago. Initially, I mistakenly connected it to my “Network” input. It sounded awful and I considered sending it back. I can only think that the Network connection is connected to the integrated amp DAC. When I connected it to the “Receiver” connection, the problems went away and it sounds MUCH better. I am mostly a vinyl guy, but I use this to preview/discover music and this fits that bill nicely. As you said, the UI is excellent, so it was a no brainer. Nice review. Thanks!

Yup, I asked you to review this a long time ago. I’ve been using it hooked up to my cheap Yamaha rs202, cool thing is that I’ve got it using the optical in from my tv to it. It also comes with the lil optical adaptor in the box. As far as a remote you can map it to your existing remote. I bought mine back in November from Amazon with monthly payments at the time with no interest, be cause I’m cheap too. Well worth it. Thanks again😊

I've watched almost every review of the Node 2i that's watchable (I really really want one but can't justify it), there's even a video that talks about several 'unknown features' . NONE of them got into the UI in depth, or mentioned the tone controls and variable crossover. Ya nailed it - Kudos.

Just found your channel and am enjoying it. Belated thanks for this review - this review would have made me flip the switch to Bluesound faster. I've got 2 of these and agree with all that you're saying. As an idiot at following instructions this has been easy to use in spite of me. Using wireless with actives in the kitchen and wired for a small office stereo where this sounds sounds WAY better than CDs. The Node 2i is amazing and on sale or available cheap used now as the new gen of this (with new DAC I believe) is dropping this month. Wish I could stream Bandcamp to both rooms at once, but if needed can use Bluetooth and cast to one. Thanks again.

I learned of this product when looking for a streamer and went a different direction. I landed with a Sonos Amp. Here me out. $100 more. Built in amp (125wpc). Similar app functionality (I haven’t tried Blue but it seems similar). Tone controls. Variable sub output (crossover, frequency and phase). I’ve been very happy with it. Yes I like playing with gear and would like to try different DACs and amps, etc... but this product has unparalleled functionality as a one box solution. Great value.

@@jamesoconnor5903 On the new announcement today I could not read anything about a new DAC, mainly about an HDMI ARC input. The syncing amongst the units is superb as long as your network is healthy. I did find that the wireless capabilities of the nodes are not the strongest. In the furthest areas my house I run most of them wired to LAN. You should have no issues if you have excellent Wi-Fi or wire them to LAN. For your critical listening rig an external DAC is awesome whilst having Multi room capabilities with all the others.

@@jamesoconnor5903 oh, it does mention something about a new DAC. Not that there’s anything wrong with the built-in DAC at the moment but for critical listening upgrading is good. It brings a bit more dynamics, airiness and bass control if your system can handle it. Probably worth trying the upgraded DAC before buying an external one. I use a Gugnir Multibit, Burson, and KEF built-in the LS50W very happy. I had a PS Audio stellar DAC, it was too analytical and tinny.

I hooked the Schiit Dac up to my Node as well, it’s close but I think I prefer the internal dac on the Node2i! I do agree the sound improves with fixed volume output, and I leave tone controls off. If Bluesound would make a more basic version that’s just the well-implemented, great sounding streaming transport with the same UI & digital circuitry, but without the HP amp, internal DAC, or subwoofer management, and priced it at about $275...they could sell a ton of them. Challenge with other streamers is very few support Amazon Music HD natively... This is one of few that do and does a very elegant job at it. For $550, can't complain. I've had a 2i for a year and a half. I think the app and the integration with Spotify connect and Tidal connect is outstanding. Though I control it from my phone with the native streaming app, the 2i, which is connected to Google Fiber, via gigabyte ethernet, is doing the actual streaming...not the phone. Sound quality is great. I'm currently using it with an external DAC for a slight improvement, only because I can...not because the internal DAC was unpleasant to listen to. I put a Bluesound Pulse speaker in my kitchen, giving me acceptable sound for cooking, perfectly synced with my hi fi in the livingroom...so you don't have the same music, but out of sync in the house. The 2i is rock solid...it's always on and it's always ready to go. In the last 2 years, I've upgraded speakers, CD transport, phono cartridge, phonostage, preamp and amp....but haven't been the least bit tempted to "upgrade" my streamer..and that says a lot.

Hey Randy When you posted the Pecan review I asked “how does the Dac compare to the node behind you” Orchard replied to my comment with a link that “trashed” the Dac in the bluesound. IDk (maybe that’s the article you were referencing) it doesn’t sound too bad to me I’ve been using this for a couple weeks and agree it’s interface/usability is awesome. I tried the Soundbase and really did not like the app/interface. I’m keeping the node 2i. It does it’s job well.

A quirky thing about this unit is that when I use my external MQA DAC, the Node2i will only output full MQA when the external DAC button on the app is OFF! I'm not sure if this is because of the particular DAC I have or what. I love Node2i. The BluOS and the Tidal connect app work well together or separately. Like Randy says, it's by far the best app UI going, except maybe Roon.

Thanks Randy for a great review. Kind of wish I seen this sooner. I have been using the Raspberry Pi with Allo Digione Hat and a 4TB WD bus powered hd. My DAC is a Chord Mojo, sound is great when its working okay! Like you say Valumio can be glitchy. In my case I get tracks skipping and my library will sometimes disappear. It gets so frustrating to be sure. Does the Bluesound work well with external HD?

The Vault 2i has an internal drive and works well. The Node 2i supports external Hard-drives and works well too. The difference is if you turn the Unit on, the Internal drive retains it's indexing on the Vault, but on the Node 2i when you turn it off you lose the Indexing of the external drive and it needs to reindex again before you play from your Library. If you only ever rarely turn the Node off at the switch you'll be fine. I didn't notice too much slowdown using an external drive when searching for music.

Curious if Logitech etc has the codes for the remote. Not endorsing Logitech as the few I've had fail quicker than the $9.99 ones. If I had $600 to blow I'd get a new tv myself.

Great review Randy! However, I think I will wait until the gapless streaming technology drops under 200 bucks. I can justify an amp and dac or an amp and dac/preamp separates for the same price, but not for a dedicated streamer quite yet, one day perhaps...

Thanks Randy, sweet review! Do you think there's a sound quality difference using this as a steamer with external dac vs other streamers, like, RPi?
@cheapaudioman
@cheapaudioman 3 жыл бұрын
ultimately, it all leads back to the DAC and any noise related to the DAC output. I think the dac in here is fine and sounds good enough. however, if you find a dac that you absolutely love then you can just hook this up to it..

There webpage is a bit confusing, it would be nice to talk to someone about it. I think you can purchase the pieces and do it yourself, or buy a Node that is already moded. This is a European company. I’m not sure if there is a company in North America doing it. I’m very curious! www.fidelityaudio.co.uk/

@@marcpena3197 I tried the zeros (supposed to be very close to the b1+ ) and I was impressed for $399. I have compared a dozen different speakers in my house over the last month and have decided to keep the Elac uni5.2 and Polk lsim 705 (actually incredibly good). I sent the zeros back because i felt the tweeter is exceptional and the bass is far better than i expected BUT when doing a b comparisons with a bunch of other brands the mids sounded extremely recessed. If I am trying to gi e good advice and you like the b+1, I would tell you to save up $699 and get the T+1. I spoke to emotiva as to why I shipped the zeros back and they told me I would actually probably like the ,t1 better than the t2. It's a legit 3 way which may solve the recessed mids. Also... as far as amps go... you may need more power to push them. The most valuable amp I have (I have like 20 amps) is a used Citation 7.1 that is capable of pushing over 500 legit ab watts. I paid $700 for it. Another one that catches my eye is the new parasound classic integrated for around $1000. I would imagine it sounding better than the audio lab 6000 , iota stack, or anything emotiva puts out. This hobby is like crack lol. I just purchased a smsl m400 dac and I'm eyeballing either getting a schiit freya + or a parasound 2250v2

The reviews I’ve seen are that it’s good not great, but it’s easy enough to hook up a dac more to your taste if you find it lacking. You will lose the MQA decoding ability in the Node if you bypass the dac, so keep that in mind.

I have one of Lenbrook’s NAD masters series products. It broke after 13 months and the company seems unwilling or unable to repair or replace it in a timely manner. The customer service is provided by the same blue sound team and it’s just inadequate. I’d look for a product produced by a company that respects their customers and honors their warranty.

I have a very specific question about this unit: if you can sign into your Radio Paradise account, so you can listen to your Favorites playlist? I have a Raspberry Pi with Volumio, and you cannot do this - if the Bluesound Node 2i does this, it will be very likely in my system before long. I have a Schiit Audio Bifrost 2 DAC, and it is wonderful. Multibit floats my boat ... Have you done a video on the Orchard Audio PecanPi DAC?
