I'm still blown away that this is jnj and not some showcase. Respect.

The band is The Fried Bananas. Joshua Fialkoff is on piano and vocals. Shawn Hershey (who is an incredible blues dancer himself) is on trumpet. They play fantastic blues and swing.

Is it a commedy showcase or what’s the problem with the audience laughing at every SINGLE movement, that actually biases the performances pushing them to seek the laughter , (and basically all audiences nowadays). It looks like blues is the new WCS

Audience is obnoxious.

Where did "juanifico" get the "results" (I'm supposing he means the best 3 couples dancing in the video)? I don't see how to examine the couples, by name, on this video; and I wanted to see the "best" here. I've only studied Tango for just about 5 months, and I am pleased to see it can be done to another music genre. Having viewed this video, I must say: The audience is too loud; they could give the band and the dancers a chance to express their own dynamics :-( The clothing looks kinda tacky :-( I've never seen such bow legged dancing, especially in Tango :-( And last, most dresses here are too short for Tango. I love the blues, but for these dancers, I think a slightly quicker tempo, available in Blues, would have been better. There are more feelings that can be expressed while doing the Tango beyond the erotic.

potatoecouch This isn't tango dancing; it's blues dancing. It comes with its own aesthetic, in which the bent-knee, athletic stance plays a key role. It is critical to the movement and feeling of the dance. I can assure you, we could all hear the band perfectly well even though the camera mic may not pick it up in the same way. And blues dancers form an incredibly supportive community - we support eachother LOUDLY and with enthusiasm. :)

potatoecouch And I can help you with the winners as well. 1st place was the second couple. 2nd place was the fourth couple. 3rd place was the sixth couple.

The guy from the second couple is a hell of a blues teacher, and a hell of a nice guy.

potatoecouch Not sure where you got the impression that this was tango, because it isn't, and nothing in either the description or the music indicates that it should be. Please don't go and impose different values on another dance and culture. It would be like critiquing the aesthetic of hip hop from the perspective of ballet. I danced tango for 7 years before I started pursuing blues seriously, and I would not have mistaken this for tango, nor would I watch this and expect tango values. Dancing with a purely tango aesthetic to this would simply not be musical. Please seek to understand the language and values of a dance and community before you judge it. Dance is not just a set of movements; it is a language, full of history, cultural context, and nuances. Community participation is an important part of blues; this is not a performance art. When I was 5 months into tango, about 14 years ago now, I was just starting to understand what it means to walk with intention. I could walk, pivot, do the molinete, ocho cortados, sacadas, paradas, but even putting it all together, understanding the musical phrasing, etc. didn't make me a tango dancer until I learned the values of tango - that it wasn't about moves or even about having a perfect axis or clean lines all the time. You'll see as you keep pursuing your dance, and then it won't be a matter of trying to fit the music to the dance, but then about adapting your dance to the music.

in response to Blue Note San Diego helpful comments, My own note was from months ago and I can't recall where I saw mention of Tango. This video may have appeared in response to my search for tango videos; lines blur on the web. As for my "imposing" different values on a dance or culture, for whatever reason I expected it to have been a tango video, I believe that my comments can still be shared as the experience as a viewer, one who is not a certified critic or experienced tango dancer. This audience may include people who had little or no knowledge of what they were about to see -- buy a ticket and go in. Like each of them, I have a right to have my own reactions to what I saw. It's not like I was standing up in the middle of the show, and hollering out my critiques in the midst of all the other noise. Your post here, corrects my errors, it is not tango. I appreciate the insights you've given me (and others, here). I do believe that anyone being introduced to a new genre of any art form, is often hard pressed not to experience it through some of their own backgrounds, and tastes, but I don't see it as an imposition, just part of having a "self". My posting those thoughts here, can still stand for at least an "outside" opinion. But thank you for showing my comments within their mistaken framework, and that is, that I was mistaken in thinking it was a performance of a tango-variant .
