Just wondering if you’d consider talking about (since you were a delivery capt) what a potential cruiser should buy/look for. I love Robert Perry’s Bw cruisers....but age...so many variables. I debate with my brother about “deals” that have been sitting for years vs paying a little more for a boat that’s had a recent refit. I know the debates are endless but any insight in future videos would be invaluable. Btw, not talking unlimited funds but in the $50k to $100k range...or what you think is reasonable for a bluewater cruiser...before spare parts, etc. One more??? Excluding your beautiful boat, what would be your next boat? Sorry for taking his time Rebecca :)

Keep at it as there are a lot of great sailing opportunities in the Npt. area to prep for crossing oceans.

Another great one! Looks like a lovely boat with great storage and interior space. Got a Sparkman and Stephens 34 (and 6 inches to be exact) design my self, built by Bianca in Denmark. Boat type is a Bianca 36 built from S&S Design #2008. Love the boat, superb sailing characteristics. Berths are a bit too short, she is a child of her time with the IOR rule which limits the interior space some (compared to more modern 34-35 footers as well as non IOR class boats) but other than that she has plenty storage and good living space. /Rasmus

i like your ship and how your v-berth has lots of screws and tools , imo to many people don't stock their boats properly with tools and such , i remember on my boat i turned the 3rd stateroom into a fully stocked workshop , i always wanted to get a 70 footer and turn it into a floating hardware store and work shop
@RVLifeNOW4 жыл бұрын
The other day some lady who is new to sailing told me that I am lucky that Rebecca allows so much space to be dedicated to tools and screws. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Should we be stuffing more pots and pans into those spaces?? I was a bit annoyed and had to ask; Without those tools and supplies, what is one supposed to do when a boat breaks, throw money at some contractor to come out and screw up the boat even worse? And when you are out in the middle of some coral atoll, who are you going to throw money at then? I think she got the point.

10:24 Regarding the finger latches on the cabinet doors. I would think that because sailboats heal and bounce around, some heavy objects on the inside of the cabinets could be moved against the internal latches that you may not be able to move the objects to get to the latch to open the doors. An external cabinet door lock would be better.
@RVLifeNOW4 жыл бұрын
You are exactly right, and that does happen in some of our cabinet doors like when cups or dishes get jammed into the latch. It can be a big effort to get the door open without breaking something.

Hi Patrick Nice job adding detail improvements to your V40. Especially the titanium chainplates. I'm quite familiar with the design--- actually owned a yacht building business that occupied the factory where your boat was built and employed several old boys that worked for Valiant back in that era. Three suggestions: 1- The hinges and particularly the hasp that closes the cockpit locker are mickey mouse. Should you ever seriously have the spreaders in the water it is likely that it will be ripped off--- and then you will have a serious flooding problem. 2- Since you've converted the fo'c'sle into a storage space, it's time to move the windlass and chain locker back where it really belongs--- alongside the fwd bulkhead of the head. 3- Throw away the CQR. It always was nearly useless, so why use it to weight down the bow? If you want a second anchor get a 75# Spade or Mantus that not only works but can be broken down for storage.
@RVLifeNOW5 жыл бұрын
1- Correct. I did change the hasps to something a little more robust. The structure the hinges are attached to is not that robust anyway. 2- At a marina in Reunion island, in the Indian Ocean, I saw a boat with the windlass mounted just forward of the mast. The owner was never around so I could not explore just where or how the chain was stored below. The run from the bow roller to the windlass was padded for the chain to drag over. It all made perfect sense and I can't understand why no production boat manufacturer has incorporated a similar design. The snag on a Valiant-40 is the inner forestay is in the way and so is the forward hatch. It needs ro be thought out in the design process, well before the boat is built. 3- Without getting a larger boat, we have no place to store an anchor down below. Twice in 12 years we hurriedly deployed two anchors and one stored down below would have been the same as not having it at all. I would like to dump the CQR over the side but there is a good chance we will one day be in the area of Tierra Del Fuego and just might need a second anchor, even a CQR. After that, freedom from that otherwise dead weight. Thanks for your knowledgeable comment.

@RVLifeNOW5 жыл бұрын
Andrew, thanks for the comment. Making videos is a continuing learning process. In the newer videos I have greatly subdued or eliminated music. Always good to hear the feedback. Happy you saw the SAIL article. Videos take up so much time, we don't write articles as much as we used to, BUT, I did just send off an article to Blue Water Sailing; "What Worked, What Didn't, Year 12" . That series has been in the October issue for the past 11 years. Hard to imagine we have been gone that long. We intended on being away for only 4 years. Now, we can't imagine going back and living in a house. I hope to cross sailing paths with you.
@KenWallaceFilms9 ай бұрын
Forgive a dumb question! With the weight of tools and spares in the built-in cabinet up in the v-berth (instead of a relatively light mattress and clothing, etc,) have you noticed any issues with sailing performance? Does the boat feel balanced? I remember reading that the Passport 40s have a fuel (or water?) tank under the v-berth and it resulted in too much weight forward and many people relocate it amidship.
@RVLifeNOW9 ай бұрын
That’s a great question. We always noticed that everything was too heavy..but that’s a cruising boat for you… every bit if this boat was taken up with essential stuff. It seemed more essential to at least keep it as low as possible. We put the second anchor OFF the bow and tied in front of the coachroof, and we put at least 1/3 If not half of the chain from the chain lock, through a pipe, down to the forward bilge to at least keep the weight low. She sailed great..l the best ever…so I guess Patrick did it right.

@@RVLifeNOW To click the adverts brings an higher award to the video channel. I have seen only a banner on this video not a starting video or other. Great info. Will incorporate some of your ideas on our1978 27 ft Cherubini Hunter. Is the pedestal mounted drink holder made from plastic boat board or is it white finished teak? I have seen a Pacific Seacraft boat in Mazatlan that the owner had done a beautiful job of finishing all of the deck brightwork, then covered it with multiple coats of white finish to prevent the sun from eating the clear finish. What type of white finish did you use on your cabin roof handrails? Did you sand the teak down to wood before applying the white or put it over a clear finish?
@RVLifeNOW5 жыл бұрын
I sanded all the teak to bare wood, to a final 120 grit. Then wiped with acetone to help get rid of the oils then primed with oil primer and top coat with two coats of shiny oil paint. I used a name brand boat paint from the chandlery. It is expensive but works. Exterior paint from Sherwin Williams did not last, even on interior work. Sherwin Williams, exterior paint used on a bulkhead yellowed in two years and was soft to the fingernail. There is a big difference between boat paint and house paint.

What about a vented loop on your bilge pump? Also, what about more Lily in your video? Thanks
@RVLifeNOW6 жыл бұрын
A vented loop would be a very desireable thing to have, but in my special situation, with the check valve on the hand pump, the vent is not needed. Both Lily and Rebecca make special appearances in the next video.
@alansugarman26316 жыл бұрын
I replaced by bilge pump which had been mounted high in cockpit locker with a submersible bilge pump, but forgot to install either a check valve or an anti-siphon loop - one not being needed with the prior set-up. I then had siphoning into the bilge when my stern sank lower when under power. First I put in a check valve - but am replacing with an anti-siphon. I am not a fan of check valve since they can become clogged. Also, Rule uses 1 1/8 hose and fitting are not hard to find. I jury rigged a Whale 1 1/4 using tape and shrink wrap, but, hose clamps did not hold. So, found a 1 1/4 anti-siphon and purchased it and then afterwards located a 1 1/4 check valve. Am going to just use the anti-siphon. Looking forward to seeing Lily.

While not as useful as they once were, I've been in 2 serious situations where the sat phone wouldn't get a signal and one of those times could've been life or death when we hit submerged sea can and holed the boat. Had we not reached someone we'd have been in the raft counting on the Eprb in the North Atlantic. Thankfully we reached a Russian Naval vessel via SSB and they had a pump that saved our ass and boat. They where going to Boston of all places and stayed with us long enough to stabilize the boat and make sure we'd make it to port. Needless to say I was damn glad I kept our SSB. Funny thing was when we went to return the pump (I don't think they expected us too) the ship was tied up near the USS Constitution and security was pretty tight. But they let us through with the pump and 10 cases of Jack Daniels,15 cartons of Marlboro ciggs and about 300 boxes of Tastycakes courtesy of the boats owner. I thought it was a cheap price to pay for saving our butts although the owner wasn't too pleased when he realized it all went on his credit card lol. But I would've paid it if need be because it was worth it to get invited on a Russian Frigate docked in US waters.

I have to poke this tiny keyboard with a jabber to type. Jim, you had me worried as there can always be something that which is obvious, could be missed! The main electric bilge discharge is not shown. The white discharge hose is the hand pump discharge and because of the poor lighting and shutter blurr , the hose clamp on the discharge thruhull is hard to see. But I probably should have pointed out that that is the hose which used to come straight out then down to the hand pump. Thanks for getting my heart rate up without exercise!

@@RVLifeNOW Sorry about that Patrick, looks like i confused that braided clear hose line as the bilge line, just a thought perhaps some hose and valve labeling to add to an upcoming video as a safety feature thing, like you say its always the obvious things we all miss. Safe travels In Tanzania. best Jim.

Wow! You remind me of Ummm... ME... lol I have more than $10,000 in tools. I even have a 110VAC MIG Welding machine... Among other things, I am a Welder/Fitter and Robotic Welding Techie... I'm always collecting more tools cuz You just never know... lol And like you, I love getting my hands dirty... I am designing and building new ideas daily... What cracks me up is, how our minds seem to work the same way... Got a problem? Sleep on it and wake up with a solution, then build it... :-) I love your videos :-)

Without all these tools, the alternative is to throw money at local contractors to come out and screw up, and make our boat worse! Our next video, coming out Thursday, is a two part video about fixing all the resin blisters on this boat. We had to make at least 4 tools to do those repairs. Can't have enough tools on a sailboat!

you might think about getting a silverware organizer or something of that idea for your screwdrivers in that galley drawer. might just help a little to make it easier finding what you need in a hurry ..... heaven forbid you actually need to find it in a real hurry.

That would be a good idea. I know pretty much where each screw driver is in that pile but it could help to get more order to it, especially when I ask Rebecca to give me a specific screw driver.

Sailing seems to be a full time job and to add not much fun if your always having to fix something.

Sailboats are a maintenance treadmill. There are plenty of cruisers who gave up the life because they got tired of constantly having to fix things on their sailboat.
