Whats the REAL story behind Patrick Childress, sailing the last storm of his life? Whats the future for his wife and first mate Rebecca Childress onboard their 1976 Valiant 40, Brick House, after a near circumnavigation, and the Patrick Childress Sailing Channel here on KZbin?
Patrick and Rebecca Childress have been sailing around the world for 13 years, and recently sailed around the Cape of Good Hope, the Cape of storms, to Hout Bay, and then to one of Patrick Childress' most remembered places in the world, Cape Town, where he had visited nearly 40 years ago on his first circumnavigation aboard Juggernaut, a Catalina 27. He had spoken fondly about the Royal Cape Yacht Club for a decade before arriving here. Its interesting that Cape Town turned out to be his final resting place. Rebecca Childress now decides where her liveaboard sailing life will lead her, what to do about her liveaboard home of 25+ years, Brick House, and explains the trauma of getting very sick in a foreign country, and then losing her captain in Cape Town, South Africa.
Special Thanks to Paper Boat Project, Sailing Uma , The OKelley's, Follow the Boat and other sailing channels who helped spread the word of the fundraiser so kindly started by Leanne Coffman and Matt Ray to pay for what health insurance refused to pay. There will be full details of the day by day experience on my blog soon. (sign up below)

Wow guys..the video is going on a week now and I just can’t keep up with the comments, at all. I apologize, and I will read and respond SOMEDAY. Life, taking care of the boat, myself, this channel...has become so overwhelming that I have to drop doing something, for now. I am going to try to answer these comments for 30 minutes per day, but then I just can’t do any more and get everything in life done. Please keep commenting, and I will get to them one of these days. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!! ALSO if you are trying to contact me to crew.....this is really what I need: 1. Offshore sailing experience 2. You can share half the expenses, which I estimate to be $1000-$1500 per month. 3. 6 month to 1 year commitment, more better, if we get along well 4. Mature and peaceful Not sure on destinations yet...Atlantic probably....contact me at www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com

Dear Rebecca your bravery in grief is a shining light that has come from deepest love that you shared with Patrick. It has been my honour as a sailing dummy to listen and learn from him as he put everything across so simple and honestly . Be safe in the knowledge that in his final moments he was at peace as he knew that the strength you have will carry you throughout which ever passage life holds for you. Take it slow breathe in and out , put one foot in front of the other hour by hour day by day and so on. The grieving process is tough but it will ease and with your strength I have no doubt you will get through it. Absolutely carry on with what you both wished to achieve as Patrick would have wanted but also to remember to keep special time in life for yourself. Take care of yourself and heartfelt love from Eamonn in Ireland X ♥️

Hi Rebecca, although I hadn't subscribed to your channel before, I had browsed KZbin and come across your channel and really liked it. Tonight I opened KZbin and first item that appeared was this episode, dar I say it but I cried, so so sad for your loss. He came across as such a nice intelligent yachtsman. With regards to your future, if sailing the world is your dream then please continue and keep the channel going. I have now subscribed. If you are looking for crew I'd be happy to. 15 years experience on 32 footer.

Rabecca I can’t tell you how much you and Patrick inspired me. Not just the lessons in sailing but your love for each other. It was clear in each video you both shared. You are an inspiration, sharing this most difficult moment in your life. What’s next for KZbin videos? We need you in the sailing and boating community- so don’t stop. Find a way. You will find a way. I got you - so do your fans and friends. Yes, you have tons of fans cheering you on.

I can tell you for sure he knew you were by his side. The tear was real. Something similar happened to me with one of my great friends who was in a coma and I was told he could not hear me and was brain dead. He also looked at me briefly and had a tear coming from his eye. I know for sure he heard and understood me. I am so very sorry for your loss... I am crying right along with you.

Absolutely concur with you that what Patrick Childess did was what Rebecca Childress saw, felt and believed. Together until death do we part are only the vows of MARRIAGE.... Please cry and mourn your loss for as long as you need to is my humble advice as a retired Doctor who is an ordained Minister. As a solor sailor with a boat pet on board I would hope that you.... Be patient with the world and stay put, follow your heart regarding creative activities and videos.... It's all going to happen as it must as nature herself has seasons. You are so well loved and supported and have the wealth that even billionaires can only wish for. When it is time to untie the lines, I trust you will be responsible and ready to sail on Rebecca! Thanks for reaching out to us but one nagging question is still on my mind. How and where do you think that you contracted the virus?

I must agree with your thoughts on this. Like many people, I have been with close family members during their last hours and am convinced that, even in a coma, or heavily medicated, people are aware of the presence of loved ones and will even appear to hold out until the last of these have come before accepting that it is time to fade.

@@saylaveenadmearedeadnicely said sir. I'm curious also. Active Private boat sailors generally spend so much time in isolation and with minimum contact with other people. Of course, Often it is in outdoor settings near the ocean. Sailing seems to be one the safest endeavors you can practice to avoid Corvid 19.

Stumbled on this video by accident... and it hit me luke a hammer. When i lived my sailing dream I met my to-be wife in St Maarten.. her dream was a house on Crete, at the beach. I gave away my boat, and moved with her to Crete, and together we build the house and studios to rent. That was 13 years ago, and we have lived her dream, until she died suddenly 5 months ago. All familiar, holding her in my arms while she slowly slipped away. Now, 5 months later, I still don't know what to do. I continue the life we shared, trying to cope with covid, trying to cope... Anyway, all I can say is: don't rush it. For me, trying to continue the life we had before is a means to find out whether i can enjoy this life without my wife, or not. I still don't know, but i sure am happy that I did not make any radical changes yet.

My wife's name was Ieta. She left here in 2007.Every night, when it is time to sleep for the night, I have a feeling of surprise that she is not here, and activly glance around to find her.. It;s not a sad or lonely feeling - just a surprise that she is not here. Were married the day before Christmas in 1953 and she looked out for me as long as she could. She fell in the bathroom and breast cancer broke out in her body. i feel that she whipped the cancer but that their "cure" attempts finally took her away l'll just hang around here....If I wasn't already almost 86 and covid wasn't around the corner, I would like to tarvel along - but I guess I will just hang around here as long as I can( as she comes by to see me quite often in my dreams.

It’s so good to know that you have so much support in our wonderful sailing community, you should keep your story going wherever it takes you. We came up Southampton water yesterday in a big chaotic blow followed the normal docking shenanigans now it is quiet and calm. Time to clear up, dry out the foulies, tidy the lockers and get ready for Biscay, a sailors metaphor. I think Patrick would be so proud of you in making this video . I hope you are well after contracting this awful disease and have shaken it off. I can see you are planning for the future and that is brilliant. The last thing we lose is our ability to hear, be sure he heard everything you said, and in that final act, such a simple thing as a glance, he was doing with all that was left to him with all that he had to say that final goodbye. A horrible time indeed - but you have so many things to remember and he will always be with you. The pain doesn't ever truly go away and it can surprise you sometimes just when it rears up - but it becomes easier to manage with time and does become a comfort. Definitely don't do anything big just now, and not for a while yet. The world is going to take some time before going anywhere will be a plan it seems. So sorry for your loss, so happy you found such adventure and joy in the time you had.

Leave the boat for a few weeks, go and see the world and friends ( meet my family, you have a place to stay in Belgium ) and soon you'll be wanting to go back on the boat, because its the only right place for you to start new adventures. Shouldnt be a problem to find someone joining you for any story. Good luck, you can make it again. Cheers.

First off, to do this publicly took a lot of strength. I hope it was healing and beneficial to voice your thoughts and feelings. That is very important and a major part of the healing process after loosing a loved one. I definitely love the Valiants and have been a fan since I lived in San Francisco and sailed on the bay where I learned and got my 50’ US Sailing certification. You deserve a lot of admiration for buying your Valiant on your own! Let’s keep in touch. I’m working to find a Valiant some day. I guess I fell in love with Sailing and after reading 'Cicumnavigation - Sailing the Trade winds’ really put a nice perspective on life on the seas.

Dearest Rebecca, I am heartbroken to hear of Patrick’s passing, I knew he was ill and I am not a religious man but I put out my best thoughts to the universe for him every single day. I turned 63 on June 13 and I’m planning to start my cruising life a year from now. You and Patrick together always made me believe that despite my age,it is a possibility and that with love and determination you can make anything happen. Your channel is not just Patrick, it is the both of you and every time I watched I thought how lucky you were to have each other and to be living your dream together. And I was always hopeful that I could find a good woman to share my adventure with, still hopeful :-).Please take time to heal, to breathe, to grieve and to let your heart and spirit rise up once again. The sailing community is an amazing group of people and I think that with their love and support you can continue your dream, And continue to inspire all of us with your courage.❤️🧡💛💚💙

@@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife Sadly, the first video I stumbled into was this video of a grief stricken woman trying to figure out what's coming next. So I will try to help. Get on you tube and type "Reflections of my life by Marmalade". The message I think is that even though it's tough, fighting on is far better than laying down and dying. The next thing to do is get a copy of the Desiderata and just sit on the stern at Sunset and read it out loud. The beautiful voice you hear is yours. So walk on Rebecca, walk on with hope in your heart and you'll never walk alone! (Gerry and the pacemakers)

My heart goes out to you. I feel your pain on the loss of the love of your life, but I love your optimism. I too lost my husband when we were cruising in the Caribbean, preparing to go out to the Pacific for a second time. I just want to give you a virtual hug and give you hope that things will turn out better for you. I eventually met a fellow sailor and we buddy boated for a time until he sold his boat and came with me on mine. We enjoyed sailing the Caribbean for 10 more years until old age and medical issues caused us to sell the boat. We are now happily retired and checking out new places in our RV. ( except right now we are quarantined). Take care and follow your dreams.

Listen to this woman. May take a while, may end up with some amazing bad crew stories, but you will get there in the end. Patrick spent the last 13 years helping you too circumnavigate. He taught us all a ton. I will miss him. It was your dream before you met him. He just showed up to help. Someone else will as well. Keep the water on the outside of the boat and rain off the good cameras and you will be fine. I do see some new learning and confidence building in your future though.

More than 1K comments must be overwhelming. My other half had me watch this...I was familiar but he is a "fan"...I am in a similar position, older man, but don't have the boat! That is his dream. Tears, and more tears for you and your story. Your experience is a large piece of why I am resistant to following his offshore dreams, I don't think I could do the (likely) loss. Couldn't do it on KZbin, by phone with family or alone. Your courage is amazing. Your faith in the future is from (opinion) a higher power! My Tom loves your channel, my father learned to sail from a great man - VERY similar to Patrick (Ken Wheeler, Seattle). He told my dad, and it has stuck with me and my brother "I can teach you to sail in a weekend; it will take a lifetime for you to become a sailor". It is a VERY true statement. We talked about your immediate and eventual needs. When you are really ready for crew and in need of a new "mate" let us know. Your talents as planner and navigator were key to y'alls cruising success. If you just want to get her (and you) home to regroup, say the word! Other options are always welcome. My comment was "she is devastated (as are we all)! Now is not the time for next steps, but my be the time to play with options. As you process things - I don't envy a second of your grief - keep in touch. You have a huge support group that will get you through the next few months, to the next destination, through Patrick's Viking burial, and introduce you to the next chapter of YOUR adventure. Patrick was very special, he joined YOUR dream. I hope with all my heart your next chapter/dream can use this love-story/tragedy as a springboard to new adventures! It may take a while but you will find your "sailing feet" and reestablish a new version of "True North" be well, and know you are in all of our prayers!

Very sad to hear Patrick to be gone. I’m still in disbelief, he was a pillar of the sailing bloggers with his knowledge. My deepest sympathy. The hardest thing in live is processing the loss of a caring loving partner. In this time of grieve it is best to go with the flow and yes, take baby steps. He will still lead you and be with you and I’m sure he will show you the way best for you. Open yourself to gaining the self confidence and all required to continue on what the future has in mind for you and let it happen. I think you will realize there is much more that Patrick taught you, how to do, than you ever anticipated. He was a heck of a good man you always could trust in! Thanks for sharing this, great to see your resilience and hope. The best thing in all these cruiser videos, is people being themselves having fun with sailing and sailboats. Whatever you end up doing and making, if it's you, it'll be great.

I remember when I started watching you and Patrick's channel, it took quite a while for you to be willing be shown on the channel. You really came out of your shell. Patrick had a wealth of knowledge in maintaining the boat and I looked forward to every episode. Very sad to hear of his passing. God bless and try to continue the channel, Patrick had really come to embrace the youtube concept. BTW, sometimes viewers like to see how a newbie comes to be a good sailor, now is your chance to show the world. You know a lot more than you think you do.

Yeah...I didn’t get involved for a while ..and now look at this. The problem is...I don’t want to emerge in to any great sailor...I already know I don’t want to be out int he elements and struggling with sails in storms, and driving this boat. There is already enough to do without doing that too. I just want to keep traveling and want to find someone to enjoy THAT with...someone who may enjoy the actual sailing part more.

Im truly stunned. My wife was watching your videos tonight to learn how to organize our first boat. What started as a fun evening ended in both of us broken hearted. I hope you find a new companion to continue your life on the water.

I'm crying my eyes out at this moment. So so sorry for your loss. What I've seen in your and Patricks videos you and him are such nice people. My heart goes out to you and I hope that you can recover a bit and get your life back on track. Patrick was for me an inspiration, a do it yourself kind of guy. The way he was doing the repairs on Brickhouse was just astonishing for me, I'm a guy with 2 left hands so to speak. Also very down to earth and practical. I'm going to miss him. Regarding your question about what to do with the channel and what kind of videos to make. I would definitely like to see what you're experiences are as a sailing woman. There are many channels that focus on the male perspective. On the other hand I can also imagine that you want to have a break from this all at the moment. If I had the time and money to help you get to your next destination I would drop everything right now and fly to South Africa. I'm sure that the sailing community can help you out. At least I hope that with all my heart.

Both one of the most beautiful AND heartbreaking stories I have ever watched.. You make me smile with the love you shared and bawl like a baby to hear the heartbreak. Everyone in life should be loved by someone as much as you loved Patrick. That is his legacy. Thanks for sharing this video with all of us. It was beautiful and touching. Big hugs.
