Diving a high-flow cave! The Devil's Spring system at Ginnie Springs in Florida!

Jonathan, Todd and Zach dive Devil's Eye Spring at Ginnie Springs in Florida to demonstrate what high flow caves are like. And then they check out Devil's Ear, with weird swirling colors where the tannic Santa Fe River water meets the clear water from the spring.
WARNING! Cave Diving is extremely dangerous and should only be undertaken by divers with the proper equipment and training. This video is for entertainment purposes only and should not be considered “instructional” in any way. The dive team that produced this video is fully cave certified with years of experience.

I've been to Devil's Eye! I was only snorkeling, but it was still cool. It's so awesome to see the inside of those caves. The first cavern dive I ever did was at Ginnie Springs! It gave me a glimpse at what cave diving can be like and it was awesome.

So glad to see yall giving some love to the Sante Fe river springs. Never knew the bubble coming up were from diver deep below, makes sense now. Used to always see a few when swimming but those areas are usually either full of swimmers or diver, rarely both due to crowds on the benches.

It always makes me feel so honored when I realize how my dad introduced me to such amazing places as a child, and I didn’t even know it. He was a diver and would take us to all these springs where we would swim and canoe the Santa Fe. Only now as an adult do I realize how cool he was and we were ❤️

My dad was a cave diver. We hit the springs every weekend that him and his dive buddies could get away. From ages 8-15 I experienced swimming/snorkeling/diving at 28 different springs in Fla in late 70's early 80's. Many of them back then were off the beaten path- and completely unregulated- accessed by a long walk through the woods carrying equipment. These videos really take me back to those times. Amazing.

I grew up in FL, spending ages 2-10 in Suwanee county (late 80s and 90s). We went to swim and snorkel in the springs so many times. Those waters are some of the best in the world. The Santa Fe is a great river too! It's always so neat to go from the cold, clear spring water to the brown, warm river water! I finally got my OW Oct 2020 and AOW 1 year later. My wife did the training with me. I have always wanted to dive, but it didn't work out until recently. My 10 year old is now getting her OW in a couple months, then off to the keys for some diving fun! I don't know if I will ever do cave training, but I do want to get trained on doubles and/or sidemount sometime.

Most agencies require at least 100 dives. Beyond that it's more about where you are with your fundamental skills; Buoyancy, trim, propulsion, and breathing. Those 4 should be second nature prior to beginning cave training. If you even have to think about them you're not quite ready.

hey jonathan i have seen in many videos that you talk about going back after using 1/3 of your oxygen at a cave dive for safety reasons , but quick question why don't you stay longer if the water flow is strong and heads out of the cave ? I mean you can swim back and out of the cave really really fast and the only reason you used so much oxygen to get in was because you were swimming against the current on the way in ,meaning you have the advantage to explore even further without worrying too much for oxygen or am i wrong ?
@Teampegleg
@Teampegleg 2 жыл бұрын
The rule of thirds is what you are talking about, officially the rule is to reserve twice as much gas as you need to exit. Which in a high flow cave means you could theoretically use more gas, but we don't because you want that extra cushion in case of an emergency. As while it may take 1,000psi to enter a cave, but if you have an emergency exactly at 1,000psi that requires you to donate gas to your buddy, you don't have 2,000psi left you really have 1,800psi as the regulators require at least 200psi to work. So if you used 1,000psi to enter, and your buddy used the same amount as well. You are going to run out of gas just short of the exit. That is why in low flow caves when diving in a team of two I back off from the rule of thirds 100 to 200psi. 100 to 200psi isn't going to limit your penetration time all that much, but it can be the difference between life and death, because even backing off by 100psi means you actually get a 300psi reserve.
@BlueWorldTV
@BlueWorldTV 2 жыл бұрын
There is always a temptation to "push the limits" a little when you are going into a high flow cave, knowing that you will "ride" the current easily on the way out. However, as Peg Leg says, you basically must resist the urge to do that because once you start breaking the rules, you significantly increase the chances that a malfunction becomes fatal. The rule is, you "turn on thirds" and for me that rule is iron-clad, unbreakable. And if I end up back at the entrance with half my air, I can always play around in the cavern zone for a while safely.
