They were told releasing this song was career suicide because it was such a shift from their older quirky stuff. It ended up being their biggest! Also a nice hint of him creating and singing for Gorillaz in a few years

I already said it in the reaction to "Tender" the album "13" is mostly about the break up between Damon Albarn and his long term girlfriend Justine Frischman because of his Heroin habit. Beetlebum is about Damon berating himself for driving Justine away by choosing Heroin over her. Justine for her part said that Damon should have put in more effort in actually taking care of her rather than to write songs about her after the relationship had ended.
@swfcocs1

Indeed, though it wasnt it her heroin habit rather than his? I've seen interviews with Justine where she admits it was her habit that was the issue

I think you will find that it was Justine that had the massive heroin problem and introduced Alburn to the joys!!
@noursarhan8695

The real problem in their relationship, according to what they both declared wasn't much the drugs (which by the way both were into at that time, especially Justine), but rather the different goals and expectations they had from it, as well as the whole public pressure they kept facing both in terms of tabloid intrusiveness and the way they were being pitted against each other in the music industry. Damon in particular was so career-obsessed to the point he even got jealous of Elastica's success in the US back then. She eventually got fed up of all the fame and success thing and made the decision to break up with him, for both of their own sake. Her quote about him not having put enough effort, I've actually seen it too. She even said they would've been still together if he did...very sad...but they seem to be in a much better place now so I'm glad for that

Blur is hands down the best band of the 90s. Their albums have aged incredibly well. They are so diverse in their sound. But most are lazy and just think they are a Brit pop band. So much more

Cool song. Not sure how much sense the lyrics make, but the song is one of their best. For a great (yet sad) Blur tune, I'd recommend "No distance left to run".

Love how you were already vibing since the beginning! Makes me happy to see your enthusiasm 😄 About its actual content, the lead singer himself (Damon Albarn, who is also by the way the co-creator and main musical force behind the virtual band Gorillaz) said the song was about feeling "sort of sleepy and sort of sexy". The feeling he's describing is actually that of the heroin high, the whole song is about his drug experience with his girlfriend at the time, Justine Frischmann of Elastica (another huge band from the britpop era, check them out!). When Blur released it as a single in 1997 many thought it would've been a commercial suicide because it was so different from their previous, brighter-sounding material (they were almost seen as a boy band by that point, which seems quite odd to me since most of their lyrics were very sarcastic and a bit cynical and that sort of feel resonated through the music itself). However, it turned out to be one of their most successful and beloved songs in the end, reaching the number 1 spot in the UK charts, and leading the release of their self-titled album which was well-received even in the US (partly thanks to the massive popularity of the second single, Song 2, and its usage in commercials). The whole album is brilliant by the way, it marked the shift between their older, quintessential British sound, and their darker, more experimental phase. Thanks for taking the time to review this, this band is soo much more than just that "woohoo song", and your immediate positive reaction is proof of it

Ahh, yes! The reference to Richard Ashcroft of The Verve! Yeah, I can see/hear some similarities with Damon Albarn. This song is about Damon's relationship with Justine Frischmann of Elastica and -- more significantly -- their relationship with heroin. The word 'beetlebum' came from Spike Jones's version of the William Tell Overture ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4PKoJ6Jl9RqmZo ). Damon has been friends with guitarist Graham Coxon since childhood, and the repetition of "beetle bomb" or "beetlebaum" or whatever it was used to crack them up. Apparently, Damon heard it as 'beetlebum.' Have you listened to "The Drugs Don't Work" by the Verve? It's a heartbreaking song Ashcroft wrote about watching his father-in-law battle cancer. I am particularly moved by this relatively recent performance of it (Ashcroft's voice is getting even better with age): kzbin.info/www/bejne/fH3FpJafq5xmepI
