"Your house was very small, with woodchip on the wall" sets the scene well to a UK audience. Woodchip is a type of wallpaper that was especially popular in the 1970s, particularly in working class homes due to its durability and price. So it tells us Deborah's not rich or posh or privileged, she comes from a very ordinary background.

"House was very small, with woodchip on the wall" is basically Jarvis Cocker saying she was working class, and "girl next door". It's not british slang, but something 90% of brits will instantly visualise a terrace house just like it in their head, probably with a TV playing Eastenders in the front corner of the living room and a box of Quality Street by the side of the sofa under a copy of the Radio Times.

Tragic 'failing in love' songs are a Pulp mainstay. Jarvis does British working class angst like no other.

Pulp have had some great tunes "sorted for Es and whizz" "babies" "common people" being some of their biggest hits in the 90s. They all have this kind of vibe

Woodchip is cheap wallpaper with small chips of wood in it so it’s got a texture to hide the cracks in the plaster. It’s looked down on as a “poor” decorating choice

Pulp are a cultural institution now in Britain. The album this is on "Different Class" is often cited as amongst the best British albums of all time. Jarvis Cocker is a national treasure You have to check out the video to this as well. Adds a while new subtext to it

This was actually a big hit single for Pulp in the UK. Pulp definitely hit a musical high point at this point in their career. Actually this wasn't the biggest hit from the album, check out "Common People" for some great music and story telling by Jarvis Cocker..... and that's coming from another Opethian.

I know I'm very late to the "party" but you really should listen to "Common People" by Pulp. The lyrics in it are just outstanding. Absolutely loving your reactions. It was your reaction to the Smiths that led me to you, and now I'm going down the Valentine's Day rabbit hole with you. Loving it!

Awe, poor guy. He's so sweet. I like this one, too. Sad, but the music us upbeat enough to clean the house to. Lol! I think I've seen the name, Pulp, but I don't think I've heard them. Maybe I have and just don't know. Fun as always, Lauren 😁

I’ve heard of Pulp, but never listened to them before. I think they were kind of a thing on college rock radio after I was done with college. Sad lyrics, peppy instruments. It was the best of the love songs this year. I wouldn’t add it to my playlist though. To each their own.

Great reaction to one of my all-time favourite songs, although Ill never EVER be able to shake the image of Corey Taylor's little dance when I hear the chorus. 'Your house was very small, with wood chip on the wall' is probably there just to set the scene. Pulp were a working class band from Sheffield in northern England, and pretty much all us working class kids grew up in bedrooms with wood chip on the wall, in small houses. Others will have told you, but if you haven't already, check out Common People. It's their most famous song, and is a working class anthem over here.

Woodchip is nasty textured wallpaper. The lead singer Jarvis Cocker caused a fair bit of controversy for storming Michael Jackson's performance at the Brit awards. If you like this song, it would be good to see you react to their other major hit, Common People.

There are a subtleties in the way English is used in Britain that a USA-ian wouldn't understand unless it was explained, there is no stalking or creepiness in the lyrics at all.

Just found this vid so sorry if you have already heard all this. This song was written from personal experience for Jarvis. He grew up with Deborah and he's singing about how he felt. She has sadly passed now. The get you undressed is more a way of saying seeing all these other guys hitting on her rather than being creepy. Woodchip was a cheap wallpaper used in low cost housing when I was growing up (80's). It's a bitch to put up and even worse to take down and was used in a lot of low cost housing in the UK. The not knowing she would get married is more about his fantasy, as in it didn't line up with how he wanted things to play out more than him not realising it would happen. Pulp are a band that don't try to varnish where they came from. They grew up with working class backgrounds and their songs reflect this. I really recommend checking out the Different Class album, it has some amazing songs on it. Others have already said Common People, Sorted for E's and Wizz (This one I can relate to extremely well after some of the free parties I went to in the 90's) and Mis-Shapes. The album is, for me, the best Brit Pop album and in my top 10 of all albums.

This was a real treat actually. The 80’s beat hooked me from the start. The elf gif was priceless and Pinkman is always on point lol. Deborah, you can even bring your baby. How many man would really say something like that and actually mean it. You can tell he really does. I don’t like Deborah at all now.

Not even close to their saddest song haha. Watching people trying to get her undressed is watching people flirting with her / chatting her up/hitting on her! Because they are trying to get her undressed! Not actually undressing her.
