One of the seminal bands of the Britpop era, Blur are known perhaps even more for their singles than their albums. The most famous arguably being Country House, which narrowly beat out Roll With It in the "Battle of Britpop".
Despite never really crossing over in the United State, Blur were quite massive in their native Britain, racking up 13 UK Top 10s, including the No. 1's Country House and Beetlebum. From their auspicious debut on Leisure, Blur's charted singles were: She's So High, There's No Other Way, Bang, Popscene, For Tomorrow, Chemical World, Sunday Sunday, Girls and Boys, To The End, Parklife, End of a Century, Country House, The Universal, Stereotypes, Charmless Man, Beetlebum, Song 2, On Your Own, M.O.R., Tender, Coffee and TV, No Distance Left to Run, Music Is MY Radar, Out of Time, Crazy Beat, Good Song, and Under the Westway. ... That's a lot of UK Hits.
Here in the US, only There's No OTher Way and Girls and Boys charted on the Billboard Hot 100.

I used to live just around the corner from where Blur recorded their self-titled album and "13". Not far away, there was a music store. One day, when I was in the store trying out guitars, in walks Damon Albarn. As a joke, I started playing "Girls & Boys" on the guitar I was holding. Damon immediately heard this and came over to me. "Hey, why are you playing that shit?" he asked. "Err....you wrote it!" I said. He stood silent for a moment and then smiled. "Yeah. Sorry about that." And then we both started giggling and he walked away. Moody bloke. But a nice one.

That's good going Blur. My top 10 followed by the other 31 with notes as I listened as usual...👍 Top 10 Blur Songs 10 Battery In Your Leg (TT) beautiful ballad to close. Love the warpy guitar. 9 Sweet Song (TT) does what it says on the tin🍬- piano is beautiful. 8 Sing (Leisure) the first song on debut that displays their experimental shoe gaze side that really really works for me. Really cool ahahahahaaaaaaah👏 excellent, 7 Tender (13) love is the greatest thing that we have. One of their best openers👍🌹 6 To The End (Parklife) Their first great song imo...arching chorus ace and it's all so delicate for Blur at time. 5 Song 2 (Blur) anthem to college years and surprise to hear them sounding a bit like Nirvana but putting their fun factor DNA into that heaviness 😎👍 4 The Universal (TGE) great song that stuck in my mind. Loved seeing them do this live too . Yup that really really really did happen.🤣 3 Beetlebum (Blur) perfect start to best album. The whiff of the dark side was the missing ingredient on previous work so was well into this. 2 Out of Time (Think Tank) such a groove. Deceptively simple sounds - genius song with one of my fave Damon vocal performances❤️‍🔥 1 Death Of A Party (Blur) Always adored this track. That grind. That chorus build. Sublime heart to best album. Also contains all the different Damon characters of his career in one song and I hates parties too ❤️‍🔥☺️🏆 The other 32 ranked 11 Parklife (title track) Oy!😂 the only time cockney rap has ever worked. Funny. Also for Damon really important bit of writing that later paves the way for alot of the stylisms adopted for Gorillaz (due a discography of them guys!) 12 Thought I Was A Spaceman (TMW) the great song on the album that is seriously overlooked. Gorgeous. 13 Country House (The Great Escape) the dig at Oasis aside love the video...the little pop culture references eg Bohemian Rhapsody etc. Cool. Big catchy quirky song. 14 There Are Too Many Of Us (TMW) who do Blur think yet are? Thanks or something?☺️😂 Love the twinkles kicking in👌 15 Country Sad Ballad Man (Blur) that bad radio mic Damon uses all the time for Gorillaz first appearance? Look no further...🎤🎙️ 16 You're So Great (Blur) Elliott Smith interlude. 17 Charmless Man (TGE) really nice sweet piss take song. That post blue tone feel is indicator of where Damon goes later with The Good The Bad and The Queen. 18 Girls and Boys (Parklife) excellent song from peak younger blur. Massive hit so catchy. 19 For Tomorrow (MLIR) straight away this song evokes the Blur identity. More trimmed and eclectic whilst still pop, the video also makes a statement....this is a London sound fellas! Lala lalala!!👻💂🇬🇧 20 There's No Other Way (Leisure) the classic hook filled Coxen driven poprock riff good enough to put that Blur trying to do Madchester sound so obviously to bed, soundly.☺️ 21 Strange News From Another Star (Blur) really lovely spacey textural piece of excellence. 22 No Distance Left To Run (13) when this cool track starts you just think...why didn't they fill the centre of the album with this sort of lovely lo-fi song instead of the wannabe Swan-lite noodles?🤷‍♂️ 23 Repetition (Leisure) the first song with a bit of guitar grind that sounds like Blur Blur not Madchester Blur👍 24 Caravan (TT) beautiful textural softly almost eastern vibes. Has lovely calming hum. 25 On Your Own (Blur) love this chanty silly sing along classic. Darker music but that humour never fades👍 26 This Is A Low (Parklife) brings together end of album well as the songs start to slightly ebb towards mediocre. Nice song...which is a bit of a template for other later even better twangy ballad anthems they do. 27 Ambulance (TT) this opener does what many of the experimental tracks on 13 lacked. Lovely. 28 Look Inside America (Blur) or Country House 2 - Chirpy and ironic. 29 Go Outside (TMW) great Coxen comeback guitar jabs.... 30 Jets (TT) Gorillaz will get sited because Damon's ideas didn't come out of the blue. Base!🎸 31 New World Towers (TMW) love this understated mourning for civilisation, 32 Lonesome Street (TMW) great jivey early Blur style opener and it's cool I get the East Grinstead Train ever week! 33 On The Way To The Club (Think Tank) cool groove with lovely underlying harmonies, 34 Ong Ong (TMW) man hard to leave songs off list as I really like whole record, 35 Mirror Ball (TMW) excellent spacey closer. 36 Pyongyang (TMW) so cool that lift to chorus is lurvly. 37 M.O.R. (Blur) middle of the road this song and album is not...their previous albums had many bits that were MOR though🤔 38 End of A Century (Parklife) it's nothing special 🙂, 39 She's So High (Leisure) just so you know America, leisure is not pronounced leeeeesure🤷‍♂️😠👻. Cool memorable smooth typical mid 90s post Stone Roses Manchester sound song from the Londoners....from the go. 40 London Loves (Parklife) oh Fripp tastic riffing Mr Coxon🎸also ...London really does love the way people just fall apart in my experience....🤔💂💔....even better, This Is The 'Low' is on same album. Pity there isn't a scary monster too.... Bowie-tastic!👨‍🎤 41 Badhead (Parklife) no need to grin and bear it ....decent song. 42 Coffee and TV (13) popular song which glides along. Bit too harmless for me to love it as much as others though Conclusion Not a great weak full of discovery for me this time but after having heard these albums over 3 decades or so I can say they hold up well. My no.1 would get in my top 500 or so all time for sure....but it's more the songs and the memories with this band...🤟😎

Sing _Leisure_ b-side - Years before _Trainspotting,_ I heard this track on Rodney Bingenheimer's midnight KROQ show around 1991. Completely blew my mind. _Trainspotting_ was the next time I'd heard it & only then did I discover it was, in fact, by Blur.

I said it in my comment on the album ranking and I'll say it again here: If you want more Graham singing, DEFINITELY check out his vast solo career. The best entry points would probably be Happiness in Magazines and Love Travels at Illegal Speeds, while fans of gorgeously arranged late 60s / early 70s style folk should give The Spinning Top a listen. His album from last year, Superstate, was among my top 3 albums of the year and is more of an exploration of the disco / dance rock sounds.

He goes into great depth about the making of Modern Life is Rubbish album. Graham has a substantial solo catalog if you like his singing and overall musicianship. Here is my list: 1. Think Tank isn't that bad. At first this was at the end of my list of Blur albums too. Now I think I prefer it over Leisure (which was in the 7th place). It has amazing tracks as Out of time, Caravan, The way to the club, Sweet song and Battery in your legs (with Graham on guitar)

I tend to prefer the quiet, slow melodic side of Blur... It took me many years to appreciate them, at the time I preferred Oasis but grew tired of them after 'Be Here Now', even so they were no where near my favourite band of the time, I much preferred bands like Pulp, Cast, Suede, Dodgy & Ash... I never liked the term Britpop and neither do I consider myself a huge fan of the movement... Just wanted to pop in and say: Love the channel. The way you all express your opinions make it a fun watch EVEN when I don't like the artist you're covering. I flipped back and forth between Jason and Kramzer for who most reflects my own tastes... (so funny to see you both battle it out often... although I appreciate the quips and the good-natured way it plays out). Firstly, I am not acquainted with Think Tank, Magic Whip or the debut album, so my list is basically culled from Modern Life to 13. Secondly I have to agree that after revisiting these albums, they tend to overrun and they would have been better served if they kept them to 12-14 tracks. You could easily lop off 3 or 4 tracks per album and the focus and listening experience would be much improved. They’re still a great band band though. I’d forgotten how much I hate the term BritPop. Especially when someone calls it a style. Does anyone actually think Noel or Damon or Jarvis were in a studio and said “right, we need to throw on some proper BritPop tracks to really make this album sparkle”? I know it was a term invented by some magazine or whatever. I know Blur could often sound very Kinks/Small Faces/Who-ish, but I think it makes as much as sense “southern rock”, which, if you know anything about the origin of rock, is like saying rock rock. Which is how Greg Allman (I think) felt about it. Sorry, this is just an insane little musical gripe. But I think using a broad brush to describe a sound (or even a reaction to that sound) is just lazy journalism.

Just useless terminology.

I've always had a problem with Damon's 'Mockney' accent. As someone else said here, it's almost better when he really overdoes it, so he's playing a part and the cartoon Punk numbers suit it best. So with that in mind, my list is almost exclusively the punkier tracks, (it's no surprise that my favourite Supergrass track is "Caught by the fuzz' ....as there's a whole bunch of that track's distant cousins amongst Blur's back catalogue) made the more great by Coxon's psychedelic tinged guitar spiralling. Being a Brit, the same school age as Damon and Noel, their ascent to fame in this country and the class and politics battles that were tied up with that time and the slightly wistful time-travel involved in hearing these tunes, means that i haven't listened to any 'Britpop' in a long time,....since that land a long time ago before Spotify. I backed the other horse back then, and Definately Maybe is still a hell of a record, an irresistible daylight robbery of T Rex licks, of a record..... despite most of what followed. But this little trawl through Blur's past, was an eyeopener. I can't do the ballads, .......there aren;t enough antidepressants in the world to get me through an Albarn ballad....but the oikish punky numbers were a treat.... 1. Bank Holiday, 2. Song 2, 3. I might throw on “Chemical World”, “Advert” or “Tender” out of the unmentioned songs for a #10 choice (or maybe “No Distance Left To Run” or “This Is A Low”), but other than those, my top 9 in some order is probably “Girls & Boys”, “The Universal”, “Charmless Man”, “Beetlebum”, “Song 2”, “To the End” (Laetitia Sadier is on that one - a Stereolab week would be cool in the future), “For Tomorrow”, “Coffee & TV”, and “Country House”. Almost all of these songs are on the best of comp I got a few months ago from the kind person Jaime who donated her CD’s to me, so I think that one would be my close to ideal at least 4-1/2 star Blur album.
