Because everyone has a bad day at work every now and then, or a day where you just didn't do your best. Couple that with him attempting a vocal approach that didn't suit his own personal voice, and you get that Nirvana cover. But Puddle of Mudd didn't become a largely successful rock band because they have a singer who always sings poorly. Clearly that performance was the exception and not the rule.

I wish he would bring in a backup singer or tune the song down a few steps, so he doesn't have to scream/struggle. He could injure his vocal cords. Every singer's voice changes as they age losing the ability to reach high. They just make adjustments and keep on going it's not a big deal.
