I recently moved from the states to England and was searching for a new piano. I was raised on my grandmother's Baldwin back when they used to sound good. I've had a Steinway, Knabe and Gulbransen . I made a new friend who is a professional pianist here. I saw this Bluthner for sale and read a bit about them. After that, I called my friends who said her instructor had one. She said she was used to a heavier sound but that Bluthner's were known for brilliantly playing French composers such as Debussy. So, I went, with her, to try out the Bluthner I saw for sale. It was a very old one (late 1800s). I have been warned away from a piano this old including a Steinway I had looked at. The casing wasn't in the best shape but the sound, oh, the sound was intoxicating. The action was just what I was looking for and what absolutely blew me away was the fact that the tone quality was maintained throughout the entire keyboard. It was priced to sell and I bought it on the spot. I have know had it for three eyars and have regularly had it tuned and I use a piano humidifier on it. When I called my new piano tuner to come out, when he heard I had a Bluthner his was response was, "Someone's a very lucky girl". Indeed I am.

For such an old piano and in bad casing , how is it holding up? Is it a grand piano? What size?

Beautiful instrument, both in tone and finish! Clair de Lune makes a wonderful demo piece because you can really hear the tone colors come through, and it is a great test of the sustain. It is slow enough to hear things distinctly and it allows you to hear the full range from bass to mid range to treble. You play it beautifully!

Oh ! This is without a doubt, one of the most exceptional sounding pianos I've ever heard ! I think this particular instrument may be as close to perfect as one could hope for and, as you mentioned, the aliquot stringing has much to do with it. This piano to me, had the perfect blend of brightness combined with buttery smooth Bass and Tenor. One thing that cosmetically jumped to mind . . . I would love to see this piano produced in a "Blond" veneer wood, it would go so well with the style of the plate which has kind of a Scandinavian, mid-century style to it. Am I wrong ? Thanks for this one Robert, it was a real treat to view.

Beautiful playing Robert! Gosh, watching this, I realize I need a new piano... I have a very very old player piano with a desperate need to be tuned. I still can manage to play some beautiful things. (Beside the point, I play mainly by ear, though.) It's TIME for a new piano. Someday maybe.

I keep having dreams about pianos, I must of had about five of them now, the most amazing looking pianos, with golden wood with beautiful grain and sort of abalone keys, and that exiting feeling you get as you approach the piano, which intensifies in the dream, then i sit down to play it and they keys become too thin and morph, or like the dream i had last night about a beautiful white piano, the keyboard turned into a keyboard from a computer haha.

We are lucky to have a Blüthner model 10 (166 cm long), made in Leipzig in 1961 in our living room. My wife is playing on this fantastic piano, sounding different from all grand pianos I know about, Steinways included. It has a rich, mellow tone, and the Aliquot system with an extra string in the 3 upper octaves produces an amazing resonance not to be heard in any other grand piano apart from Blüthners. The bass is also remarkable for an instrument of this size.

There is a clarity of balance and sustain in the timbre throughout the 7 octaves. The only drawback is the microphone's inability to reach down to 27 hz. I would have to be in the room to hear that 45' sound wave to the marrow of my bones. If I stood condemned to hear only one instrument for the rest of my life I'd choose the piano.

Debussy owned a Bluthner this size. Probably after he wrote Claire de Lune, but it makes clear the kind of palette he liked.

Bluthner with the aliquot scale is unequalled for richness. I entered East Germany in 1967 to purchase a grand piano. Conditions there were bleak. It is a miracle that these east German piano makers have survived and thrived. The older aliquot design with separate bridges and dampers has been simplified on the newer units. Bluthner fell out of favor with some concert pianists in the 40s because of his political leanings.

As far as I know a 1969 Blüthner of 190 cm length with Aliquot strings is not a Model 6 but a Style VIII (Style VII without Aliquot). I believe - and please correct me if I am wrong - that the renaming from Roman numerals with higher meaning bigger to Arab numeras with smaller being bigger happened in the lat 1990s or early 2000s. This one is of course from the communist period. I was told that these instruments can be perfectly fine but sometimes the mechanics have been built with wrong parts etc. but if the price is right, they are easily to be corrected and become great with a little effort. I own a 1907 Style X (230 cm, 7‘8“) and I really love these instruments.

Can you please tell us more about post-WWII Bluthner production? I've read that the company was nationalized in 1972 and before that was still privately owned. Does it have any impact on pianos built before and after 1972?

Pianos from the East German era are of variable quality but this is one of the best I've heard or played. I wonder if it has a Renner action rather than the inferior Flemming one? They'd have had to pay West German Marks for that- not impossible given that they were selling into the American market, but it'd be interesting to know one way or the other.

Today all grands have the middle pedal, but up until about 30 years ago it was not standard. I think Steinway had the patent on the idea of the sostenuto for a long time.
@Kref3
@Kref3 5 жыл бұрын
Nowadays I think you will not find any new grand piano anymore without the sostenuto pedal. But this piano is 50 years old. Back then it was not standard but extra to be paid. And you also should know that Blüthner is from the eastern part of Germany. The part that was the German Democratic Republic. As in: Communist Germany. Blüthner was owned by the state at that time, not by the family Blüthner who took control back only after the German reunification. Blüthner was the top of the line piano model of the GDR though and always had a good reputation.

@@wotan10950 Just press it at the same time u play a note or chord, it sustaines them.. I have learned one impressionist piece and and one romantic one where I would use it if I had one.. One can achieve similar result in advanced pedalling but as an intermediate player its difficult to get complex textures to sound just right..

Mr Estrin why do you make the pianos so bright when you voice them? Not all instruments need to project over the orchestra. Even your intro music. Also when you played the excerpt with the big ascending chords, why does the top sound so thin?
