The door casing needs to be attached to stay. He was trying to position it (and by the looks of it, not leave room for expansion). They are usually attached with finishing nails, which are not intended to be strong. But doorway pull up bars convert most of your weight into torsion against the (structural) framing and only a small fraction into sheering force against the finishing nails. It can definitely support your weight. That said, always check that the casing is secure and the bar is positioned properly. It is a very bad time if it slips while you're using it!

The door frame is held in by nails and rests on other pieces of trim then the way the bar works its distributing most of the weight into the studs so its pretty unlikely to shift or come loose. The trim pieces are not always the strongest material though so you might dent it if you don't have one with padding or a wide bracing bar. On the low end those are rated for 220lbs and that's probably far lower than they can safely support.

the pullup bars are stress tested i think so you should be good as long as its an official one. you can tie a chair to it just to be safe to test it before you use it if you dont want to drill
