Excellent video. I just used this spray bottle with distilled water method and found a very noticeable increase in power, mileage, and smoothness in my car. My car shakes very little and engine noise have decreased dramatically. Very shocking how smooth my car runs after using this method. Points to remember: Make sure car is at warm operating temperature, Make sure someone is pressing the accelerator between 2,000 - 3,000 RPM, and since you have the throttle body opened up, clean your throttle. Very Nice method and results!! Thanks BMAC. UPDATE: It's been 2 weeks and my car is running perfect with almost no vibrations at all. No sensor, catalytic converter, or any issues of any kind. My car's power and smoothness is absolutely shocking. It's almost like a new engine at full power. I performed this method twice already cause the first time I had incredible results, why not do it again and found the results to be at an A+ level.

I think the reason this and many other products work on carbon build-up is that they temporarily cool the very hot parts they come in contact with. This heating and cooling causes the hot mineral (carbon) to crack away from the metal surface. So, basically you are simply taking advantage of the different coefficient of expansion between metal and minerals. Provided it doesn't screw up something downstream, its okay. Heat up a bit of corroded copper pipe and then plunge it in water and you'll see this effect firsthand.

I just did this method today on my 99 vw tdi 1.9l and it has 315,000 miles on it and this actually did have a positive result it ran much smoother and went through the gears much better. I just suggest making sure that you run the engine good after so that all the water evaporates from the oil so take it on the freeway for a nice drive. I did it it's safe and does help with high mileage engines.

I’ve done this, but I strongly recommend only doing it just before an oil change. Some of that water will seep past your piston rings and contaminate the oil. I’ve noticed foamy watery oil in my PCV valve after using this method.

Ive seen some of those head gaskey failures and what he doesnt mention is that there are minerals and RUST builds up in the corners and edges--rather quickly too. Carbon doesnt react to metal but water sure does...thats insane to purposely corrode your engine.
@DENicholsAutoBravado8 жыл бұрын
+parteibonza True. When you do water decarbonization however, you aren't using coolant. It shouldn't have so much crud. I show another method of seeing it's effectiveness. A laser guided thermometer can indicate valve leak. My cylinder no. 1 showed hot on the intake. After this, it didn't the first time I did water decarbonization. The second time helped a year later, but now I know I need a valve job.

Have you ever noticed how your car goes better on a rainy day or in frosty or high humidity conditions ?.... It's because of the h2o being pulled into the engines air intake (NATURAL WATER INJECTION). Yes water is an uncompressable liquid, but as long as you are not putting greater volumes than any one of the combustion chambers at any one time there will be no hydraulic effect !
@DENicholsAutoBravado8 жыл бұрын
Zane Leathart Yes, I've noticed a lot of cars feel good on rainy days. :) And if it's a heavy rain, sometimes there's a good effect for days after, and then the car feels the same again. Actually doing a purposed water decarbonization has more lasting, desirable effects, but you should check out my video on the subject because I also go over all the problems it causes, most of which you can do something about . . . except of course hydrolock from over doing it.

gtjack9 Manifold as in collects. Air as in air. Manifold has ports fir intake valves. Intake valves open and gets sucked into the chamber. So yes and no. He never said it was injected from the intake manifold. Also your engine will not hydrolock. You can have a blown headgasket and have coolant flooded pistons and not hydrolock. Depends on which stroke and the amount. On an engine at op temp a little rain water isn't enough to even be noticed out of the tailpipe yet hydrolock.

@garretts919 жыл бұрын
This does work. Its a very old school method that has been used since carburetor motors were the norm. Ask any old geezer mechanic about it. To anyone who says this can hurt an engine, ever heard of "water injection"? the military and the performance car world have been using water injection to cool hot spots in the cylinders for a long time. The cooling effect of the water helps prevent detonation allowing for high compression ratios and more horse power. This method done right will do no harm to a motor whatsoever..... One thing I will point out is that it's much better to inject the water through the brake booster hose. I wont cause the CEL to come on and some cars will barely run without a proper reading from the MAF.

To all the haters.... this idea is not without precedent. In the 1960s, when GM was experimenting with turbochargers, the 215 V8 turbo engine in the Olds (Starfire? I think it was?) had a water-injection system. It was primarily to prevent pre-ignition from the high cylinder pressures created by the turbo. It was not just water, though - I think there was some ethanol mixed in. It was discovered that in addition to reducing spark knock, it did help 'decarbonize' the engine. Water introduced to the intake stream in fairly small amounts would be instantly atomized, so the idea of hydrolock is ridiculous. Some people believed that water injection increases horsepower. Of course, this is not the case - at least, not directly. It DID allow certain modifications to the engine to work without being so harsh to the engine, though, so in that sense they are partially correct. Before GM played with this idea, it was used in some high-performance aircraft engines in WWII, for the same reasons and with similar results. Of course, modern engines are electronically managed, including more precise fuel delivery, so carbon buildup should be of only minor concern. Carbureted engines did not have such precise fuel delivery, and carbon buildup was far more prevalent in that era. I would also hasten to point out that 'moist' air is not unknown to an engine. Any time you drive in the rain, you are going to get moisture in the engine. It is almost instantly vaporized totally and blown out the exhaust, though.

An old friend of mine ran his old old Dacia with his self-made 'water injection', which activated at full throttle. He was convinced he felt the small power plus. Btw, the engine was running fine. Always.
@frozerekmeyata40915 жыл бұрын
What water injection did was to slow down the gasoline burn rate which is what happens when you raise octane, so water injection raises the octane, when turbos and superchargers first came out they would overboost the turbo which required higher octane fuel which exceeded the pump premium octane and that would cause heavy pinging which was premature ignition which could destroy valves and piston tops, so water injection cheaply raised the octane points up and the pinging stopped and due to the pinging stopping performance increased, they've since then came out with intercoolers so water injection is no longer necessary plus the intercooler never runs out of water. The same situation would occur with advanced ignition timing or Nitrous Oxide (Nox for short) injection, too much nox could destroy an engine due to lack of higher octane fuel not available at the pump, so water injection cured that issue which meant they could inject more nox for more horsepower without damaging the engine. Read this for more detail: facebook.com/DevilsownMethanolInjection/posts/we-get-asked-this-a-lot-can-i-use-water-methanol-injection-with-my-nitrous-oxide/699536366806520/ also read this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_injection_(engine)

@garthleach81446 жыл бұрын
We used to do that as part of a regular tune-up. Poured water straight into the carb while running it up under a load (would show like 60 mph on spedo) on the in-floor dyno. The water would superheat into steam and blow the carbon deposits from the combustion chamber out the tail pipe. Most of the time there would be clouds of blue smoke( carbon) and no problems caused, most of the time that is. Sometimes a piece of carbon would get trapped under a valve and cause the engine to tick. To fix just repeat. Rarely it would blow a head gasket or worse so the practice was stopped but that's after several 10's of thousands were done.

back in the 80's when leaded fuel was banned and the octane levels plummeted it became a common thing to install a water injection system, which was something you could buy at any auto parts store and install yourself in a few hours. it was basically a system that sprayed water into the carburetor when the engine was under load. the addition of a mist of water to the combustion process produces a cooling effect and prevents preignition, or 'pinging'. i put one on my 66 galaxie in high school and it saved me almost a dollar per gallon back then.

I can see this being done on newer cars or newly rebuilt engines. I recently had to replace my cylinder heads on my 99 Dakota. I'm not the original owner I'm the third owner. It has about 165k miles on it. Anyway, so as I pulled the intake manifold to my shock it had some pretty bad carbon build up and engine sludge. When I pulled the cylinder heads the pistons had a lot of carbon build up. Maybe 1mm thick idk. So what I'm trying to say if you have an older vehicle with over 100k miles on it and have never done anything to clean up carbon or sludge do not expect a few mists of water or mist a full bottle of water to clean hard carbon build up. I spent hours and hours cleaning the carbon and sludge. Oh and I did not use a spray bottle of water either. Wire brushes razor blades a small shop vac and lots of throttle cleaner and even oven and BBQ cleaner to clean the valley where the intake manifold sits on the engine block to free it and clean it from engine sludge. I did the same to the intake manifold and plenum. When trick I did to clean the plenum is put it in boiling water to easily scrap and brush off old oil and sludge. Can I see this method work? Possibly, but only in newer cars or rebuilt engines with very little carbon build up. If you want your old engine clean and free from carbon you need to take it apart. If you don't want sludge don't be so cheap and give your car an oil change as scheduled. Like I said I'm not the original owner of the truck but who ever was did not maintain this truck well at all. I got the truck for almost nothing. Now with an almost rebuilt engine new heads new bearings and clean intake manifold and cleaned engine this truck runs amazing for a 6 cylinder. Take pride in your car maintain it change its oil and don't be so cheap. A few mists of water will not clean or decarbonize a poor maintained vehicle.

Their is a FORD TECH that is on You Tube. The F150 and other ECOBOAST engines are building up carbon. What not to do he said is to use SEAFOAM. The heat from SEAFOAM will cook the bearings in the Tubos that is close to the motor. No problem you have now ruined your warranty and the Turbos cost THOUSANDS. He didn't say you couldn't use it on other motors without TURBOS. He said I could use MARVEL MYSTERY OIL in my gas 4 OZs on a full tank and 6-12 ounces at oil change. This will not harm TURBOS as their is no heat and fire.

Your 99 Dakota would have been very badly abused to have 1mm of carbon build-up. I've rebuilt engines with 540,000Km on them, and they were as clean as a whistle. Sludge build-up is also due to shockingly poor maintenance. Typically, sludge and carbon are easy to eliminate with basics covered off more frequently.

The cause was a Polar climate causing sludge and driving short distances less that heat up of 30-40 minutes.It was driving patterns and a cold climate causing moisture and sludge . Educate yourself before you make statements.Marvel Mystery Oil was used and the sludge cleared up in 30-40 days.The motor became quiet and MPG increased from 36-43 on highway at 60 mph cruise control.

BRUCE LEE I think he is right, but there is more than one way to build up carbon and I really enjoyed your post too. So the Ford Ecoboost building carbon is more of a problem during to direct fuel injection. The gasoline can't clean the valves that way. That's where the carbon is building up on those engines. VW has the same problem. Bruce I'm very glad you helped me see a use for Mystery Oil. I think it's often misused but using it like you did could help in a lot of similar situations. The other part of the Ford Ecoboost issue in my opinion was that some models had too much intercooler. Ford's fix or it seems to be working. Similar in a way to your cold climate problem. Someday I'll take apart an engine just to clean carbon and I'll compare it to the effectiveness of spraying water for decarbonization. I had amazing results. One cylinder was running 7 degrees hotter than the others. I heard lots of excuses about water jackets being there and such but those are evenly displaced so I couldn't buy it. Check out my articles. carmilespergallon.blogspot.com/2014/10/decarbonziing-your-engine-with-water.html?m=1

When your engine stops the valves on a couple of the cylinders will be open, so over night you will have condensation forming in these cylinders. That is why when you remove the cylinder head there is less carbon in those cylinders than the other ones. In older engines they did not have rubber seals on the valve guides, the rocker cover would condensate inside which caused the oil to look like mayonnaise. This water oil mixture would run down the valve guides and into the cylinders. The boiling point of water is 100 degrees center grade. The combustion chamber is about 900 degrees. The water would have evaporated putting up your compression ratio. Which gives the impression of a cleaned engine.
@richardb65108 жыл бұрын
H20 baby...old hotroders have known this trick going all the way back to model A ford racing..the corect amount injected in the cyclinders under pressure added to the gas stream fires the cylinder hotter than just the gas itself. Chances of hydrolock is almost impossible in a hot engine unless you are pouring water in and no one would do that..under high heat and revs the water changes to a vapor of Hydrogen and Oxygen that breaks down creating more heat under combustion which cleans the valves, pistons and combustion chambers.. This was used by pit crew mechanics for more power way back in the early Indy 500 days..worked really good on old flathead engines

Hydrolock occurs when a volume of liquid greater than the volume of the cylinder at its minimum (end of the piston's stroke) enters the cylinder. Since liquids are nearly incompressible the piston cannot complete its travel; either the engine must stop rotating or a mechanical failure must occur. Symptoms and damage If an engine hydrolocks while at speed, a mechanical failure is likely. Common damage modes include bent or broken connecting rods, a fractured crank, a fractured head, a fractured block, crankcase damage, damaged bearings, or any combination of these. Forces absorbed by other interconnected components may cause additional damage. Physical damage to metal parts can manifest as a "crashing" or "screeching" sound and usually requires replacement of the engine or a substantial rebuild of its major components. If an internal combustion engine hydrolocks while idling or under low power conditions, the engine may stop suddenly with no immediate damage. In this case the engine can often be purged by unscrewing the spark plugs or injectors and spinning the engine to expel the liquid from the combustion chambers and then restarted. Depending on how the liquid was introduced to the engine, it possibly can be restarted and dried out with normal combustion heat, or it may require more work, such as flushing out corrupted operating fluids and replacing damaged gaskets. If a cylinder fills with liquid while the engine is turned off, the engine will refuse to turn when a starting cycle is attempted. Since the starter mechanism's torque is normally much lower than the engine's operating torque and momentum this will usually not damage the engine but may burn out the starter. The engine can be drained as above and restarted. If a corrosive substance such as water has been in the engine long enough to cause rusting, more extensive repairs will be required. Amounts of water significant enough to cause hydrolock tend to upset the air/fuel mixture in gasoline engines. If water is introduced slowly enough, this effect can cut power and speed in an engine to a point that when hydrolock actually occurs it does not cause catastrophic engine damage. Causes and special cases AutomotiveHydrolock most commonly occurs in automobiles when driving through floods, either where the water is above the level of the air intake or the vehicle's speed is excessive, creating a tall bow wave. A vehicle fitted with a cold air intake mounted low on the vehicle will be especially vulnerable to hydrolocking when being driven through standing water or heavy precipitation. Engine coolant entering the cylinders through various means (such as a blown head gasket) is another common cause. Excessive fuel entering (flooding) one or more cylinders in liquid form due to abnormal operating conditions can also cause hydrolock.

The reason this works is because this is old technology. It's called coal or carbon gasification. It's used to turn coal(carbon) into gas for combustion. It's not odd or unusual. The chemical formula is thus: 3C (i.e., coal) + O2 + H2O → H2 + 3CO

@gordonlawrence35379 жыл бұрын
+decay21450 the sensors have to cope with far worse than water vapour. Water is a combustion product for diesel and petrol. Basically pure diesel and pure petrol would give you carbon dioxide and water in a 100% burn. However in air and with all the aditives there are some nasty nitrogen compounds and all sorts as well including carbon monoxide from incomplete combustion. That includes small amounts of nitric and nitrous acid. A tiny bit more water will not cause any more damage - not really much different to driving in a really bad rainstorm with an iffy air filter.
@gerrynightingale90459 жыл бұрын
+Gordon Lawrence The combustion process is sublimating atmospheric humidity into droplets...the same process that causes condensate to form on a glass of full of iced soda. The amount of H2o in the actual diesel or gasoline fuel is miniscule."A tiny bit more water" is absolutely not a problem...it's HOW MUCH is being used in the video I have issues with!I think it borders on insanity to deliberately squirt water into a modern fuel-injected engine to accomplish so little in terms of 'de-carbonization' of internal engine parts.Such a procedure is just not worth the risks involved! Why use water when solvents are so available? They work, and the risks in using them is not much of an issue.

Lots of years ago, long before you were born. Some had a vacuum plate mounted under the carburetor. Folks would hook up water systems that allowed the vacuum to draw in the water which would give you more power, clean the carbon from your engine and make it run a bit cooler. Long before computers in cars, they only had the radiator and the oil keeping an engine running cool. Fans were mounted to your coolant pump and spun as fast as your engine rpms. No extra cooling fans and so on. So water being drawn into your engine in a mist form was quite beneficial. Also an engine without carbon buildup runs cooler anyway. So what your showing folks is really beneficial to life of your cars engine. Nice job. And to those that might worry about carbon breaking loose and scratching up your piston walls. Water makes steam in the cylinders and softens up the carbon. So unless your engine is almost clogged solid with carbon, that's a very slim possibility.
@edlee19696 жыл бұрын
This works well with distilled water in a plant mister/sprayer. My 2000 Corolla was pinging on hot days running above 3K RPM. After 3-4cups of warm water sprayed into the intake while running the engine at 3-4K RPM, now the throttle response is incredible, and no more pinging! Done correctly with fine mist, there is no concern for hydro-locking. So many people doing this with Seafoam for many years (myself included) I've yet to actually know anyone who destroyed ttheir engine due to hydro-locking.

This may or may not work but I have used Seafoam for many, many years and it has never let me down yet. Works 1st time, EVERY time. Wow, he sprayed water into his intake and now his steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car. That seems to be a terrible side effect., ha ha.

I was curious so I tried this. There was a small difference in the amount carbon on the piston however the water also contaminated the oil in the sump. The engine oil was milky white just like if the engine had a head gasket failure. I just repaired an engine that had internal coolant leakage. Where the leak was ocurring was identified by a very clean piston. The best way to prove his theory and know how long it takes to clean the piston is by using a camera with beore and after shots over a documented length of times. BMW is working on high performance engines with increased piston compression ratios plus water injection to prevent preignition and cool the pistons.
@marklaw44359 жыл бұрын
BMW are introducing Direct Water Injection to their Performance Cars, as it aids in Cylinder Cooling, which conversely allows Turbo Boost to be Dialled Up, without putting undue additional pressure on the Engine, or the possibility of premature fuel Detonation. The First BMW to get this (New) technology is the current M4. They have been trialling this System for a few years now, and have found No negative Side Effects. Yes it is a very effective way to keep Carbon Deposits Down, as carbon is a heat sink, which retains unwanted (excess) heat. By cooling the Engines Cylinder Walls, Water Injection will assist in mitigating Heat related problems in the combustion cycle, which Robs the engine of Additional Performance Gains. Water Injection will further Aid Direct Fuel Injection. As a problem with Direct Injection Systems is an additional Build Up of Carbon Deposits on the Head(s) around the Injector(s) and to a lessor degree the Valves, causing problems for cars over + 3 yrs of age. This is especially true, if car owners don't service their cars as per manufacturers requirements, with the appropriate Grade of Motor Oil.

But the article goes on the say that the mechanics, ect. May have contacted Porche to make a costume semi spherical combustion head. But at that point the article gets a little merky as they have no physical evidence of the contract. Otherwise an impressive and amazing article. Long as it is. Seafoam does the exhaust same thing is is more productive in cleaning other parts of the engine all the water is doing is making a steam and cleaning the tops of the pistons but isn't cleaning the insides on the other hand seafoam creaps into the cracks because it doesn't evaporate like water does, also seafoam leaves a protective layer of oil on the pistons when its done working, using water on the other hand removes the oils from the pistons and can cause severe engine failure if done incorrectly, its always advisable to use a lubricating fluid when cleaning anything mechanical inside the engine, all water does in this situation is evaporate the carbon because of the heat but look at it a month later and you'll see that the carbon has built back up. Its simple chemistry, as with the seafoam it leaves a lubricant residue on the pistons and fights off the returning carbon, this process should only be done for a temporary fix, if you have a leaking head gasket water nor any other lubricant is going to fix it.

Random internet searches done for working on my own cars and plenty of KZbin videos on the subject of what seafoam does, also not necessarily real cracks but space between the cylinders of the pistons and the pistons themselves, and any hard to reach places than water won't creap into and if water does it just sits there but with the chemicals inside of seafoam such as isoprpyl alcohol than get into hard to reach places and dissinegrates carbon build up just like cleaning off your hands with rubbing alcohol wipes it does essentially the same thing but doesn't affect the oils on the engine or oils on your hands/body

What I would do is take off the entire intake system incl. egr and intake manifold and clean it thoroughly with an oven cleaner or similar so it all looks as new, then put it back in. Usually there's more crud in there than on your pistons in the first place. I've never had a car giving me issues because of carbon on the pistons, but I have had a couple that gave me trouble for a clogged up intake manifold and egr, or an intercooler full of oil, stuff like that. Usually those golf mk4s never have issues because of carbon on the pistons, unless you take really bad care of them. EGR and intake manifold, turbo, intercooler, those are the things that do need a cleaning now and then.

A buddy of mine tried this on his diesel engine. It caused the engine to blow, due to oil getting too thin, while doing that a few times and the piston got stuck, breaking a hole into the sidewall of the engine. Some of the broken parts got into the exhaust system and broke the turbo and catalytic converter as well. When I asked him what made him do that, he showed me this video. I took the motor apart and the pistons were not even cleaned as you claimed it would do. In some comments you refer to this technique being used in the 60's, but they didn't actually use normal tap water. This can cause rust in the exhaust system and the turbo (if it's installed). Only distilled water doesn't cause rust. How can you even recommend a "cleaning" method to everyone, without making exceptions to certain cars? This practice can NOT be safely performed to ALL types of cars as you claim (and especially not with tap water).

I used to run a garage for years back in the 60's and 70's, we actually poured a small stream of water into the carb. and it does clean the entire combustion chamber, but the misting will be much safer for the inexperienced to prevent a hydrolock, that will occur if the volume of water entering a cylinder is too great of an amount to be compressed, for the guy who asked water mist is just molecules of water with a lot of air entrapped in it this can be slightly compressed up to a point. If a large slug of water ( or other liquids such as gas or oil) entered the cylinder the rising piston with closed valves will compress the gasses (air) but liquids can't be compressed so something has to give, usually it is a bent rod, cracked piston or head or blown head gasket.The reason we used to remove the carbon years ago was all fuels were full of lead and other hydrocarbons that left heavy carbon residue in the cylinder after combustion and pieces would break loose and get under the valves causing clicking noises and it also caused hot spots that ignited the incoming fuel charge causing detonation which will completely destroy an engine, especially a 2 cycle.another thing that has destroyed engines is people trying to stat an injected engine over and over with no firing, this could fill the cylinders with fuel and since liquids don't compress guess what --bent rods ect...now that fuel is lead free the carbon has been reduced a whole lot!I have seen this guy on many post trying to discredit Seafoam and I do not understand why, I run a 300 hp Yamaha outboard and Mercury in the past and if you did a propeller change your hands got black burned 2 cycle oil residue on them and it is very hard to wash it off your hands, we started using seafoam in the fuel and guess what we can change props after running for weeks and NO black residue that amounts to anything, this tells me it is some kind of good detergent, bottom line I have proof it does work, although I haven't torn any engines apart that had been cleaned by it? That would be the real proof, run it through an engine just before disassembly to see how clean it is inside!

+Chadd Chevrolet While I disagree with his squeezy bottle method, Water Injection has been successfully used as far back as RAF (spitfire) days of WWII... BMW have recently introduced it in their M Spec cars, and Ive seen quite a few diesel engines running it with really promising results. Its a very good system if its done properly... Half a dozen pumps of a squeezy bottle isnt (IMO) going to make THAT much of a difference, but the theory is sound.

The question is, have you been a good mechanic for 40 years?

@@value4life471 If water's so bad then explain why, when I did just this same method to my neighbor's lawnmower that barely ran, it made the engine work right again.

I have a handheld steam cleaner. Do you think that would be good to use instead of your spray bottle?
