Let me say this about the .22 short...because I have a special relationship with the cartridge. I was a police officer for 36 years, 43 years if you count working as a Senate LE liaison (I don't). During those 36 years I was shot 3 times. The first time was in 1975 by a guy armed with an Astra Cub pistol chambered in .22 short. In the confrontation he pointed that gun in my direction and ordered him to drop his gun, looking at him over the sights of my Colt Trooper MKIII .357 Magnum in a two hand hold. He chose to disregard my order and fired one shot which hit my left (supporting) hand. That proved to be a very bad decision for him to make. I didn't notice the wound immediately. The bullet never exited my hand and they found it in the meaty part of my thumb at the hospital. It was a solid bullet, no expansion. I was treated and released from the hospital. After the adrenaline wore off...it HURT LIKE HELL!!!!!!! Had it not hit my hand, it could have easily hit my head or neck and my day may have turned out much worse. Hence the phrase..."If you shoot me with that thing, and I find out about it, I'm going to be really mad!" In any case...not my choice for self defense, but it is no toy! Happy New Year Buffalo!

woww ig that means a short is not 100% deadly if it just got stopped by a thumb but damn still scary You said you got shot 3 times?? what were the other 2?

@@FirmeVatito702 A 9mm in the chest (stopped by a kevlar vest) and, the worst, a .25-06 rifle to my right leg (calf). It took 14 months until I could walk again without braces/crutches. The shot from the 9mm left me with a severe bruise and a lot of pain, but nothing else.

Thank you for testing 22 Shorts! I grew up shooting an old Winchester single shot, that would only chamber Shorts. I took all kinds of critters with it over the years from magpies to prairie dogs! With iron sights, it could do everything my buddy's rifle shooting .22 Long Rifle could do. My son has that gun today, and still has fun shooting it occasionally. I really enjoy your channel.

That little guy is not toy. If a shooter can pull off quick shots with it and hit with most rounds from very close distance - considering the hollow points had to be completely sideways inside of the target at some point to end up backwards, that would be a very bad day for about anyone on the recieving side. Which i'm fairly surprised about! Fun series, i had great pleasure watching it!

Great test video. I have made what I consider to be significant use of .22 short over the years. The CCI hollow point ammo has been my preferred load. But there were others used at different times. Snakes, rats, squirrels, and more have met their end courtesy of one of the most useful and efficient cartridges ever designed. There were some situations where I absolutely did not want penetration on vermin inside a building. I modified the CCI hollow point with a drill bit to a huge cavity and very thin skirt walls. Probably was down to 23-25 grains. It would fragment the front portion and leave only a tiny flat of the base as a possible exit fragment. Almost complete energy dump on rats a few feet away most of the time, with very little exiting if at all. .22 Short doesn't get noticed much these days, but for those of us with very specific needs they truly are a magic pill. I might add that .22 Shorts are so light and compact that you can pack and carry them almost 2:1 over long rifle ammo. If outfitting a wilderness kit, it is probably something to consider. .22 short solids can kill birds such as grouse or even smaller without much excess damage for a fast snack in the skillet. If your .22 is a manually operated rifle or a revolver it's simple. If your .22 is an auto, you can single load the short cartridges directly into the chamber and they will fire. It's up to the user whether or not that is useful for your situation or not. All in all I am a firm believer in .22 short utility.

There’s some mystery to all this and maybe you can help us all understand it better. When we were kids and hunting squirrels with 22 LR round nose lead bullets, the squirrels would often get away on us. Then Dad gave us hollow points and it blew a bigger hole in the squirrels and not as many got away. Then we started using 22 magnum solid & hollow points on squirrels and groundhogs. We had to use solid points only on squirrels because hollow points destroyed too much of the meat. But on groundhogs we liked how hollow points did much better. Makes us wonder if ballistic gel is really reliable bullet stopping medium. With our hunting arrow penetration tests, we got the best results with bagged sand. The broadheads which flew best and went in deepest was also what worked best on deer. We sharpened the broadheads before each shot. That made a good difference. Steel blunts didn’t go in quite as far as field points but on wild game they’re the best. We wonder if you could show us more on semi-wad cutters and wad cutters, because these may indeed relate to our archery steel blunts are so much more effective. We also found that hammering our lead round ball slingshot ammo into squares would punch through a raccoon’s rib cage, but not necessarily so if left in the round. We actually have hit big fox squirrels right in the shoulder with 3/8” lead round ball ammo and had them run off unharmed. We were taught to not shoot small game with target or field pointed arrows because it just didn’t work well to stop a squirrel or rabbit. But blunts sure did if we sent them to the right spot.

I have been using .22 shorts starting in the year 19 and 58 when my oldman gave me a Colt .22 revolver to go squirrel hunting with him. He told me to use .22 shorts because they don't go through the squirrel. That all the power was contain within the squirrel takes 100 percent of the hit. He said it also knocks the squirrel out of the tree. This was very important information to an 8 year old boy. Because if that squirrel died in the tree, guess who the oldman sent up the tree to fetch it.

I still want one of those gallery guns… the surprise to me was that even at a much higher velocity, the HP shorts out of the rifle were almost the same depth, and still no expansion. I don’t think the shorts should be sneezed at as they’re still pretty fast even out of a tiny barrel, and the series showed they do penetrate quite a few different types of things as well as pretty deep through the barriers you tested. The solid nose definitely would be better out of the rifle it seems
