BMPCC4K | Laowa 7.5mm f2 | World’s Widest rectilinear MFT lens on Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

Recently Laowa lent me this lens for a few weeks to test and create a short video with it.

I found this lens to be quite fun to shoot with even though I rarely shoot that wide.
It is sharp, has a nice shallow depth to field and a very distinct and cool look.
The lens can be a bit soft on the edges wide open but it kinda looks interesting.
I took the lens to places where it could come in handy such as the church or the gallery, to be able to fully use the f2 and the super wide 7.5mm.
The lens allows you to get really close as well which is cool.
Didn’t have an ND filter so had to shoot at high apertures outside such as 11 or 16 and sometimes it still wasn’t enough as the light was pretty intense when shooting in the city for example.
Overall I really recommend this lens, it is super light, well made and can allow you to shoot in situations that wouldn’t be possible with a more standard lens.

Loved using my 11-16mm but ended up settling for this to keep myself in motion with a prime and find unique angles. It’s not always needed, But the wide angle shots out of this make it worth while for the kit

I have this exact setup. I really like it for when I am in a really small space but I don’t like how the lens warps objects when panning. Therefore I want something a little tighter. Maybe if I keep this and add the voigt 10.5mm I’ll have both for different scenarios

I also like zoom capability and was really considering something like a 8-XXmm or something. Just a quick question. I have a BMPCC 4k and am looking for a wide angle lens for establishing / master shots and B-roll. Because of your video reels I'm stuck between a Laowa 7.5mm ad the 9mm one. Though my setup includes a metabones 0.64 XL speedbooster. Will there be any vignetting or do I have to get any special adapters to use this lens on it?

You NEED ND filters! Did you shoot it on ISO 100? Because that would explain those blown highlights, did you shoot raw or ProRes?

The museum shots and the station shots look amazing, I’m not really a fan of the outdoor shots as much with what it’s doing with the distortion on natural scapes (grassy fields, ocean etc). Anything with angles or hard lines really benefit as anything with organic/natural shape just looks unpleasant (to me at least)

Lovely video! Really beautiful footage. Did you like this lens for the outdoor/landscape shots btw? Or is there a lens that would perform better that'd you recommend? I'm traveling to Scotland and Ireland in a few months, so I'm looking for a lens that will capture those majestic green sceneries really well. Don't think the 12-35mm will be wide enough, but I could be wrong. Thanks!

Thanks a lot !! If it is purely for landscape and travel I would definitely stick with the 12-35. Better range and at 12mm you would be at 23mm which is quite wide. Plus it is still fast at 2.8 and IS is always a nice feature when travelling. Hope this helps :)

Any advice for grading. The colour work here looks beautiful. I am about to buy this camera (after renting it for a weekend and falling in love. I guess, specifically: What compression were you shooting with and what are some tips you can give someone who is new(fish) to colouring footage. The sunset stuff, specifically, looks breathtaking. Thanks a lot !! I was shooting Prores 422, UHD. The grading was actually pretty minimal. I graded in FCPX, playing with curves mostly (lifting shadows and mids) and increasing saturation. I made sure to shoot with good light when possible. I also added a slight tint of blue in the shadows. Hope this helps.

Awesome video! Those shots were gorgeous. Quick question - How would the lens be manageable with in-body stabilization or stabilization in general? 7.5mm seems like an unusual number and I'm not sure if that can be applied to panasonic mft cameras to make the IBS any help...

Thanks so much !! I am not sure I understand your question. The 7.5 helps in regards to shakes since it is so wide. I havent used it on a camera that features IBIS.

IBIS definately helps but you would still notice a bit of distortion when focus is set to infinity.

@@OfTwoLands Gotcha. I just found what I needed. For Panasonic cameras, when you shoot with a third party camera, you would need to set the focal length of the lens before you shoot to enable the ibis to work properly. for the GH5, it allows you to punch in any number to the tenth value. For the G85 (the one I want to use), it only gives you certain discrete values to use for the ibis. They said to use the closest value for the lens. It would for sure. And the lens isn't soft, the 1080 is so it's more about the codec than the lens :).
